Another great posting Charlie. As a subscriber to your channel I look forward to your new postings and I love your style of filmmaking. You focus on the subject, not yourself as so many other KZitem posters do and I appreciate just taking in the sights and sounds from the drivers point of view with no talking so a person really gets a feel for the neighborhoods and of coarse when you talk to those who live in these crime infested neghborhoods.

How come every time Charlie makes a video someone from whatever city always has to say “Ah thats not our cities hood!” or “he missed the major spots”. People, give the guy a break. He IS the objective standard now as he has been to way more spots than any of us combined. Not needed to get into every microscopic statistic on a block by block basis. The guy is driving the country! Haha. Keep it up Charlie!

4:10 Kind of shocking to see a big brick church in ruins. I looked it up; this was St. Thomas Catholic Church on E. Trigg Ave in South Memphis. Someone organized people to rescue the bell and the stained glass windows, which he says were made in Munich, Germany, in the '20s, when the church was new. Empty ruined houses are bad enough but seeing a sacred space, onetime center of community life in this condition makes it extra sad.

In the 90s I was a gov't field appraiser when that church was barely hangin, still around, I had to assess the value of the properties in that area. It was very difficult. Every window as busted out/boarded up.

Always a silver lining. Even though this city is severely suffering with a sense of hopelessness and certain deprivation, the music is just as certain to be a big part of the natives day to day.....@ approx. 3:00 in you hear the infamously noted King Of Souf’ Memphis ”Playa Fly--Nobody Needs Nobody” blaring through the streets. You can also see the difference in what locals consider ”old South Memphis” & the very prideful Orange Mound communities. I'm not a natuve but am a long time resident (gave birth to one of four of my s☀️ns here), I have a beautiful love/hate relationship with this city. I'm a middle class white guy so I shouldn't be talking but as someone who grew up in a poor area I really feel the pain these people go through. They live in fear and a sense of failure. I grew up in a poor town that was filled with drugs, guns etc. As a kid I did my best to stay away from this stuff, but sometimes you are unlucky. My friend died at 16 after he smoked a dangerous amount of weed. In my town I also saw the same people on the same corners/street/parks etc everyday. Their not there because they choose to be their, but because this is were society has led them. The government needs to do more in these areas, my prayers go out to everyone who has been through or is going through these situations. Thankfully I'm in a better place in society now as a scientist and part time social worker. I hope everybody who is going through these situations knows that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Keep believing!
