You literally took the words right out of my mouth about Icehouse. They are ( next to Iva Davies good friends Daryl Hall and John Oates ) are one of my all time favorite bands. What doesn’t get mentioned about the song Down Under is that the first time Iva heard that, he thought that the lyrics weren’t representative of what he thought Australia was to him and that was the spark he needed to write Great Southern Land.

One of the greatest injustices in music history--next to the Bee Gees and Michael Bolton each being found guilty of plagiarism and copyright infringement--is when Greg Ham was found guilty of blatantly stealing a piece of flute from a 1932 song. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong! Every time I hear "Down Under" I sing it with my Outback Aussie accent (acquired when I lived there for three years) and I say a quick prayer for Greg to let him know he's still admired and missed.

Music is made of plagiarism. It's a damn language. When you use a short phrase of music in a song, it's homage. What better riff to use in a song about Australia to use than "Kukabera"? Copyright is meant to encourage the artist to make more music and then it's time to let it go, let others make something new out of it. The composer of that song died a long time ago, it was the sheet music folks who demanded money.
@gregkniewel6503

@@puppetsnob It wasn't even the sheet music people. It was a different company that bought the rights just so they could pursue the case and get money they had never earned. Like George Harrison's manager hearing his new song, realising it sounded like an old song and then going and buying the rights to the old song and using his "music publishing company" to sue Harrison (his own artist!) for plagiarism. Bad faith from every angle.

The song adopted by Australia II when they beat the US to win the America's Cup. Those 2 memories will always be intertwined for me. Jumping around the lounge room excitedly as Australia II crossed the finish line, to beat Liberty 4-3 and break the New York Yacht Clubs 132 year hold on the cup. Then off to Primary School, I was 9 years old. Everyone was wearing green and gold or something with Australia II's name on it. First time I remember being so proud to be an Australian.

My memory of the song is going to Australia for a family vacation about 2 or 3 years after it came out, but before Crocodile Dundee hit theaters. Americans were sort of a novelty there, and people asked you to say things because of our accent. Anyway, I remember the first morning I asked our waitress about vegemite sandwiches at breakfast. She looked at me strangely and told us about Australians and vegemite. She told me to eat it on toast with a ton of butter and a small amount of vegemite. She stood by and watched me take a bite (which I nearly threw up) and then laughed her way back to the kitchen. That stuff is gross, but go to Australia if you can, an absolutely amazing place with the nicest people.

Bussiness as Usual pulled up the charts in a beautiful period of my life, I was 10 going on to 11. Everytime I hear Down Under or any song from the album, memories of my Caribbean stay for a year; rush in... Sunshine, clear skies, turquoise sea, happy people, the freedom of childhood, the taste of mango and tropical fruits... Yes, it's a sensorial journey of happiness to the time period of 1982-1983, thank you Colin.

Overkill is such a deep song, that as a teenager I would dance or sway to carelessly not having the slightest idea of the emotional hardship the song was about, Colin made a unplugged, slowed down, stripped version a couple of years ago and it hit me like a baseball bat. Slowing down the song forces you to "listen" to the lyrics, not hear it as some sort of "accessory" to the catchy beat. Wow, a whole different experience. Love both versions, but rediscovering it as an adult is beautiful.

As others have mentioned, “Overkill” was an amazing song, but I also really loved both the song and the video for, “It’s a Mistake.” Just classic Cold War observations/ commentary in the tradition of movies like War Games, Dr. Strangelove, and Failsafe (which if you’ve never seen the latter, it should be mandatory viewing and should be screened right alongside one another.) Strangelove is Kubrick’s bizarrely brilliant sendup of a deadly serious topic and Failsafe is tense drama that examines a communications error that leads us to the brink of Nuclear War. Henry Fonda is the U.S. President and Walter Matthau as his hawkish advisor pushing to strike first; every bit as good as 12 Angry Men. Also calls to mind songs like Nena’s, “99 Red Balloons” and Sting’s, “Russians.”

First album I ever owned. My older brother gave it to me for Christmas the year it came out. He has such a unique cadence and pronunciation to his singing style. It's like reggae with an Oz twist.

you have forgotten the easybeats, BeeGees, Nick Cave ( Birthday Party, Boys Next Door, BadSeeds) Sia, The Saints, INXS Daddy Cool Spectrum, Powderfinger, Divinyls, GoBetweens, Wolfmother, Midnight Oil, Silverchair, Colin Hay's Voice has mellowed and improved with age like RM Williams boots, Maton Guitars and Grange Hermitage and is an amazing entertainer like that other Australian Legend Tommy Emmanuelle

Oh where to start... I heard this song fist time in the early 90s at my uncle's summer bar (which was next to our summer home, my cousins and I would stay up late, climb to the roof, listen to the music and watch the people dance). Men at Work are still one of my top 5 pop bands and they actually inspire me musically. I did a guitar solo playthrough on my channel for Overkill actually. I also have a track that screams of Men at Work and when I find a singer I will release it (Colin Hay, if you're reading this, call me 😂). Seriously, I love their music. My favourites are Overkill, Who Can it be Now?, It's A Mistake. Legends.

I saw Colin last year, and it was likely one of the best performances I've seen. He is not only a fantastic performer, but a masterful storyteller that weaves his songs together with the audience is a stellar fashion.

I enjoyed their big hits on the radio and then, in the spring of '83, I traveled back to West Germany to visit friends and on a Saturday afternoon, I think it was, a friend and I took a train from Frankfurt to attend an open-air music festival and I was up for that, big music fan. And I don't even recall all the performers but, for sure, it ended with Chris de Burgh and Men at Work. And it was truly memorable for me to be at the sportplatz and unexpectedly see Men at Work live in concert.

The song originally caused a lot of controversy in Australia, Colin was actually indicting the Aussies for their bad behavior. This was not meant to be a nationalistic song praising them. Look it up, the actual meaning of the choruses is very different.
