On our way home from the Landrover 75th birthday celebrations in Wanaka I received a works order to complete a Health & Safety inspection on the Fibre Optic build between Te Anau and Milford Sound.
The Lake Hawea to Haast and Te Anau to Milford Fibre optic projects slide quietly under the medias radar but would rank up there amongst the greatest civil build project so far this century.
Anyone who has driven over the Haast Pass or to Milford cannot help notice that these routes for the most part have been blasted out of the hardest granite rock on the planet and located in the most remote parts of the country in the harshest of environments.
The installation of the Fibre optic link into Milford has allowed several Cell Towers to be installed along the Milford Road as well as Road monitoring cameras for public safety in this harsh environment.
The next day I took the long way home as I wanted to visit Lake Onslow - which I had hoped to visit when we were in the area only 18 days before.
