True story, So when MOW came out years back and they still sold them as physical copies. None of the copies were sold at all in my local game store, just stuck there to gather dust. A year later I decided to work full time for half year with the game store and decided to find a way to promote the game so that we can get rid of the stock. I started playing the game on a projection screen during work to show somewhat of a demo for others to look at. Customers started asking questions about the game with its unique inventory and direct control mechanics. We sold the whole stock and had to ask other shops around for more copies to be sold after the demo. Good times.

Ah, MoWAS2. An absolute certified hood classic. This game is so good, many consider it the crow jewel and definitive game of the already beloved Men of War series. But, what I never could really understand, is why isn't this game MORE popular. Sure, the granularity and complexity of control systems is daunting at first, but if you have even some passing knowledge of WW2 arms and tactics you'll fall in like a glove into this game. Besides, there's other more "mainstream" strategy games I feel much more daunted by. Either way, this is a game that is VERY well liked by the people who do like it, and still play it to this day. It somehow still has more of an online playerbase than it's spiritual successor, Gates of Hell:Ostfront. Me, I love them both, but would probably play more GoH because of the technical improvements of the engine since then. As you said, the old girl is starting to look her age. But also at the same time.... Playing old games, is based.

A great summary - most players I've discussed this with simply like both games, it's not about which is best, which I think is a great way to look at things. I'm actually quite annoyed I didn't discover this game sooner as the gameplay is quite simply fun. Some gamers begrudge older games simply because they're old, but I can entirely understand why players have played AS2 for many years and will continue to do so. It's just a great formula!

@varyagace
2 жыл бұрын
@@dudeguybro That's because it technically was. Assault Squad 2 is the final development of the franchise came since previous games "Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2" and "Faces of War" which are from 2004 and 2006 respectively. The first Men of War title came out in 2009, and all of the sequels since utilized the same engine. AS2 did have better graphics, textures, more content and all, but it's still running in the same foundations. Those are, however, quite solid foundations, as the game is still being modded to this day. Anyway, if the old looks of the game turn you off, Men of War 2, the actual sequel, is under development and should release between the end of this year and early 2023. Or you can play instead Gates of Hell:Ostfront, a spiritual successor made in a modernized version of the engine.
@twiglets2
2 жыл бұрын
@@dudeguybro The mechanics are definitely intimidating to a new player (which I was myself not so long ago!) but I think they're also the reason the game has a passionate following to this day. Graphics wise - I see where you're coming from, but at the same time the graphics look pretty decent at times (compared to other similar RTS games). Just my opinion - it looks less refined than say, Company of Heroes 2, but if you're used to Steel Division 2 or games of that ilk it looks pretty good considering it's age (a lot of benefit of the doubt there though). But each to their own, I guess I'm not that bothered by how it looks as long as the mechanics are solid!

Nice review, as usual. I had just watched your Gates of Hell review and bought Call to Arms during the last Steam sale. I was considering getting GoH but the sale price still wasn't too great. How do you think MoW:AS2 holds up against CtA and GoH? I bought CtA expecting a similiar mod scene but was surprised a number of workshop pages mentioned CtA support being dropped and instead heading back to MoWAS2. In my limited experience with it I think the greatest pro CtA has over this game is its campaign mission variety - especially between faction campaigns, given that MoWAS2 missions are the same templates across each faction.
@twiglets2
2 жыл бұрын
I haven't played CtA for some time but from what I recall, the first person control is a very cool feature, especially with choppers! But after that initial excitement faded it became a bit...boring? Maybe As2 just has better content as a whole which gives is more longevity? I agree entirely about GoH campaign mission variety, I found myself excited to play the same mission several times by approaching it in different ways, loved it! I suspect that if GoH included as many factions as As2 it would be more popular, oh and GoH has the Dynamic campaign nearly forgot about that! On reflection, I'm happy we have the choice of such good games!

Yes! It's on the list and I purchased the game in the recent Steam summer sale. It's always difficult to know in which order to look at the games as some take a decent two weeks to get enough info to make a video on.
