This week, we sit down with Alastair Campbell, one of the UK's most prominent political and media figures and one of the world's leading mental health campaigners.
Alastair has battled mental illness for 40 years. He's experienced psychotic breakdowns, been hospitalised, fought manic depression and has spent countless hours analysing, talking and understanding his own mental health.
He has had a fascinating and extraordinary career in the media and politics. He helped Tony Blair win a landslide majority in 1997, he was Tony Blair's Director of Communications and strategist and has been at the forefront of the some of the biggest moments in British political history.
He's the author of 16 books, both fiction and non-fiction and when we recorded this, he was publishing his latest book, Living Better: How I Learnt to Survive Depression. Stephen Fry says 'this book could save lives', and since it was launched in September, the reaction has been extraordinary. The book's impact is irrefutable. It has saved lives.
In this episode we chat about how he deals with manic depression, how he dealt with the pressure of running one of the most high profile operations within 10 Downing Street under Tony Blair whilst suffering with depression, how he drags himself out of the dark abyss and his new book.
Here's Alastair's story.. so please leave all judgement at the door.
