Watch Simone's beam routine carefully, ESPECIALLY the slo-mos, front and side, where she "lost her balance." It does not appear at all that she needed to grab that beam. She bobbled, yes, but she appeared to grab the beam as an afterthought. I have a sneaking suspicion that sweet, decent girl grabbed that beam to leave the door open for Laurie. If so, what a marvelous, unselfish thing for anyone to do.

I thought exactly the same when I was watching and I'm thinking it now as well. Biles didn't needed to grab it, because she was already in control of the hole situation. That makes her a more amazing person than she already is

Matheus Borges Matheus .. I was even more convinced when I saw that she wasn't all that distraught, heartbroken or terribly disappointed when she joined her coach right after her routine ... just kind of shrugged it off. When she was interviewed before the competitions, the interviewer, naturally, asked her about those "FIVE gold medals." She rolled her eyes and basically said she didn't expect that of herself, that it was the media who was making it an issue. She may have decided to "flub" a little extra to get all that attention off HER and redirect some of it to her teammates and other gymnasts. If so, and I suspect that too, she is one darned special kid. .

OMG thats like a whole new level of stupidity. She absolutely did not do that propose. How naive. I assume none of you have ever been on a balance beam, when performing all of the elements the body position must be aligned with the beam for balance. You can clearly see that her body was slightly unaligned when she did the skill and so she ended up landing a bit to the side, her right feet did not land fully on the beam so she did not get the full base to find her balance. When she touched the beam you can see that back feet wasn't fully on the beam either, so she definitely had not regained her control and her chest was so low on the beam, thats a dead giveaway of how much not in control she was. Plus, when she touched the beam you can see that she is really making an effort with her feet that is only half on the apparatus, she is squeezing the beam pretty hard. You can see she was disappointed after she landed the dismount. It was a honest mistake everyone makes sometimes, but definitely not on propose. LOL to even think she would do that on a Olympics... Simone is lovely sweet amazing girl but she isnt dumb and she isnt a bad athlete either. As an athlete you can just gave up to have a team mate win, that laughable and disrespectful too.

I like the performance of the gold medalist BUT her degree of difficulty was much less than Biles and Hernandez. True she didn't wobble but she just twirled and twirled in her routine. Hernandez should have gotten the gold here.

I am not sure if you follow gymnastics, the difficulty score is the equation of composition requirements, the dance, leaps and acrobatics elements that are performed and connection bonuses. Simone at her top can get a 6.9, Sanne has a 7.0 version but when she saw that Simone failed she went for her 6.7 difficulty. Sanne doesn't do the difficult tumbling but she does 3 acrobatic moves which is just enough to get by and she does the rest with dance moves in combination. Turns are a requirement, Simone does a wolf 2.5 and Sanne does a triple (Okino) among others. It's considered "code whoring" which is to use the code of points to your advantage, everyone does it in a way, each gymnast works with their potential. The dutch don't take huge risks with backwards acro series like most that do back handspring layout step out layout step out, but she does the aerial to aerial and on her difficult version she connects it to a front aerial and she does 2 back handsprings on her mount.

+jennyendlessly Common sense and logic are the two elements to consider when judging a gymnast on the balance beam which also apply to the rest of the apparatus. I believe that if the gymnast had more tumblings and leaps on the beam she is taking major risks of wobbling and falling off the beam as in the case of Biles. If a gymnast will just twirl and twirl, and do a minimum of splits and twists her percentage of error is much lower. I think the scoring system of women's gymnastics is anomalous to say the least and should definitely be changed. I think eventually will be changed so that the scoring system should be based on how many tumblings, jumps, somersaults, twists, and the like a gymnast can do off the balance beam and not solely on twirls and balletic moves. Of course these things cannot be ignored but it shouldn't be the basis of degree of difficulty. That is why figure skating is now very accurate in judging because a female skater has to do elements like double axel, triple toe loop, etc. on free skate program so that even if a skater falls her chances of winning is not diminished by a single fall if she had performed all her elements. Artistic Gymnastics has a long way to go as far as basing on what we just witnessed here. for difficulty points is

+S4d but true You are a moron that's why. Try jumping on the beam twice and you will fall you idiot. Then try just twirling you might wobble but you will not fall. that is common sense and logic and physics too. The more a gymnast defy gravity, the more chances he will fall. Go back to grade one moron. Even a first grade child knows this that is why a seven year old child will never jump off a window LOL. You probably are one of the stupid judges who was bribed to let this Dutch girl who walks and struts like a supermodel wannabe but couldn't do a single jump off a beam and gets the gold. Get out of this thread moron

Jupiter it really shows you know nothing of the sport, the requirements you are talking about already exist, it's in the code of points, they are online, go and have a look and then come back a bit more prepared. It's only you saying that acro is more difficult than dance moves, every commentator reminds us that girls have an easier time doing the acro elements and fall on leaps and turns. When only 1 gymnast in history performed a triple turn (Betty Okino 1992!) before Wevers, when even Mustafina and the Russians that have extensive ballet background at best do doubles (Komova 2011) and excellent tumblers like Aly Raisman perform a single turn one might get the point, but not you. You have no idea how stupid you sound when you talk about bribes, probably from your couch, when there are those of us studying the code of points, following the evolution of gymnastics, and everyone (I mean except you, by everyone I mean serious publications like gymnastics blogs, podcasts and every specialised journalists) have nothing but praises for the dutch style and accuracy. There's something you probably haven't been following, it's a constant on Nellie Kim and Bruno Grandi's interviews and speeches, the dispute between difficulty and artistry in gymnastics, the weight given to one at the cost of the other and the need to increase artistry, ultimately this is called artistic gymnastics. The USA came up with a winning method, they calculated that even with execution deductions if they throw full difficulty they will mathematically come out on top, so you see gymnasts like Raisman and Skinner with bent knees and flexed feet that will medal even with a fall because they are so further ahead on difficulty. Of course there are americans with good execution, the point is that people are making vault finals with a fall on qualifications because the Produnova is a life-risking vault ranked at 7.0. For people that watched old school gymnastics that is simply painful. Try to check the soviets Lilia Popkopayeva, Svetlana Boginskaia, Elena Mukhina. Russians (check floor routines: Anna Pavlova 2008, Dementieva 2010, Komova 2011) have always been beautiful to watch because that's the education they get from the start, a gymnast won't climb the ranks there without perfecting the basics. They do lack consistency and they are not physically conditioned as the US girls but there's extension, harmony, flow on the movements and correct posture. It's not about throwing the harder skills if they aren't done properly. Now if you feel gymnastics should be about power, speed, height I recommend you go watch Fast & Furious, it should keep you entertained until the next Olympics which is when you will come bother us with your insults and stupidity again.
