I have added quite a few Menards pieces to my collection. My train room gets a Christmas tree with a train under it every year. The Menards is the perfect line for the little ones to come lay on the floor and enjoy playing with trains. That's where my love started as a child. Is this not what this hobby is all about?? Yes it is!! Thank you Menards

Very well done Eric! Your choice to do reviews on the more traditional model railroad products and explaining the differences is a good one. Menard's trains should keep you busy for quite some time. Menard's has been a shot in the arm for model railroading. I am looking forward to your upcoming videos on the history of O gauge.

For some reason 3-rail on O-gauge has never been a problem for most model railroaders. We've all seen knock-your-socks-off O-gauge layouts, are three rail and it doesn't detract from the realism at all. I actually like it. When I was a kid some of my friends preferred American Flyer because it was 2-rail and more realistic but 3-rail never bothered me. A guy I knew had a fabulous American Flyer train layout. It was nice, but I liked my Lionel better. I still do! :-)

On behalf of your viewing public thank you for sharing this. Eric, we look to you and your reviews to share the onslaught of high-end products put out there on our hobby store shelves. As you are very well aware many of us cannot indulge in some of the rolling stock and motive power you have shared with us over the years. For those that can only live vicariously through your purchases we thank you so very much for informing us of a more affordable alternative. As is always the case this review is "spot-on". Buyer Beware! As Eric said "You get what you paid for" I just went to Menard's as they have these on their shelves for Christmas time. I went to about 7 different stores to look at their rolling stock which is pretty expansive. Boxcars, weathered boxcars, tank cars, open faced hopper cars, closed faced hopper cars, gondolas and flatcars with different trucks and military equipment are on their shelves. HOWEVER of the 7 cars I ended up with I had to go through 22 of them to get ones that were not defective. Some had bent axles, damaged wheels or busted couplers. So be sure to have a receipt handy just in case you do find something wrong with them. I did not find the cabooses, empty flat cars or husky stack cars in the stores I believe those are online only. Other than that for $20 a freight car you really cant go wrong they are actually pretty detailed for the price and once I sorted the bad ones out they run pretty well behind my Lionel engines.

All of their train items are available on their website year-round, including some items that might not be easy to find in your local Menards' (assuming you live within their corporate footprint--I don't, so online is how I get them) The only downside to ordering online if you're not in their service area is that a shipping/handling charge is tacked on. If you _do_ live in their service area, you can have the item shipped to your local store at no additional cost.

I like Menards O-scale buildings. I can take most of the "Toyish" look out of their buildings and structures with weathering and modifications and they offer Modern O-scale buildings that nobody else offers. I have bought alot of Menards box cars and similar cars and use them as yard fillers. From the top and sides they look great until you see that "ridiculous" air reservoir tank hanging down (been speculated on forums that the old K-Line molds are being re-used)! But for $25 it sure beats the MTH and Lionel stuff for idle equipment. But they do run great though sometime have had to re-gauge wheels to NMRA standard width. Menards has entered O gauge in big way especially their buildings. Where MTH and Lionel worry, ponder, do studies and pre-orders before they bring out a plastic building, Menards just plunges ahead and builds it. I have alot of those Menards building populating our layout, in some cases, replacing the the drab Lionel/MTH etc buildings (as aside, I sometimes remove the Menards name and Jack the dog and add new details/repaint just to differentiate or re-purpose from stock.)

Eric, go through a historical chronology, starting in 1900 when Lionel started selling toy trains. And also, in companion videos, explain and details of each scale and each type of scale of trains, but make your main hostory video long and very detailed in the history, including the reasons why for everything, what people were thinking at the time, etc. Make it an entire series of videos, a companion series to go along side your train review videos. And over time, just like your train reviews, add more history and scale detail videos. Don't rush through it, but rather, make it a very long series of videos where you complete a video when you're able to, and make them detailed. As a kid in the 70's and 80's, I used to love 3 rail trains and track, especially the old tubular track. I have some postwar trains, and even though they run fine on newer track, I love running them on old track instead. I truly believe there's as much art as function in Lionel's designs. The 3 rail track, for example

Easily giftable (new word) lol to kids. I proceeded to fill my cart with about $2500.00 worth of product. But was thwarted upon my attempt to pay. Having those lights in the body of the car is probably much cheaper to produce that having them elsewhere. Menards is not looking to be 100% authentic and most who will buy those cabooses don't really care if it is or not. Those cars also make for good starting points for added detailing, etc.
