Meniere's affects around 0.1% of the population, most commonly between the ages of 20-50 years old. Its symptoms are normally, but not exclusively one-sided in nature. Many of the people whom it affects have had previous issues with migraines, headaches, temporomandibular joint dysfunction or labyrinthitis vertigo. A lot of the time, despite people having a majority of the symptoms, they have no physical problems relating to their ears. This often has these people worried and wondering what exactly is wrong with them.
As chiropractors, we noticed that there was a strong correlation between upper cervical spine dysfunction and Meniere’s disease symptoms. This could be down to several things, such as poor cerebrospinal flow and drainage or even altered blood flow to the brain stem. Misalignment of the upper cervical spine can be the cause of many, if not all, of these problems.
Upper cervical misalignment can also cause dysfunction to the eighth cranial nerve (Vestibulocochlear) leading to many of the MD sensations, most commonly involving balance and special sensations of hearing.
