Menno van Delft talks about his latest acquisition - a harpsichord by Bernd Fischer after Claude Labrèche, Carpentras, Provence c.1680.
The Labrèche harpsichord has a compass of GG (lacking GG-sharp) - c3: manual I, 8' + 8'; manual II, 4'. The main lid is decorated with an anonymous painting after Francesco Albani (1578 - 1660), Diana and her nymphs disarming Cupid. The importance of all surviving 17th century French harpsichords cannot be overestimated, as they provided an essential medium for the great blossoming of a highly inventive and important school of French keyboard composition. Christopher Nobbs, the restorer of the instrument commented on its ‘sombre grandeur, which seems so eloquent.’ That eloquence (and the eloquence of Bernd Fischer’s copy of the instrument) provides modern players with similar insights, insights which cannot be gained through any other keyboard medium.
