I went vegan at the age of 49, almost 50. I was having hot flashes and other hormonal issues. They all stopped within two weeks. I went through menopause at 52. I am now 67. I have continued the vegan diet with supplementation. I would caution any woman after menopause to make sure she’s doing resistance training and increasing protein intake to make sure you retain as much skeletal muscle as possible. I have waist length very wavy hair. I do add some low lights into my blonde and gray hair. I do my own just because I hate going to salons and haven’t for 27 years. One thing that makes a huge difference in my long hair is an oil mask. Are use coconut oil and add castor oil, calendula, oil, argon, oil, jojoba, oil and rosemary essential oil. I slightly damp in my hair and apply the warmed oils from about the nape of my neck down. I then wrap my hair into a twist and leave it for 30 minutes. Do you sometimes all day. When I shampoo, I just shampoo my scalp, never the hair below the nape of the neck. When the shampoo rinses out, it takes most of the oil with it. I do add conditioner after and run it through with my fingers in the shower. If I feel there is oiliness still in my hair I will rinse my scalp with apple cider vinegar. Doing this retains my wavy curly hair. I was in the store two days ago with my husband and an older woman approached me and said “I want your hair!“ What a lovely, complement and confirmation that what I’m doing must be working. Thank you for this discussion.💜

I’m 70 and since not going to the salon during the pandemic, my hair is below my waist now. I started taking collagen a couple years ago and I’m positive it has helped my hair, skin and nails. As far as menopause, I didn’t have any symptoms at all except my period not happening. I went to my OB/GYN and she let me know about a week later that I was in full blown menopause. Not complaining and I have no clue how I managed to not have any negative symptoms. I did not have any hormone therapy either. I’ve taken lots of supplements since I was in my 20s, so who knows.

As a physician, I am careful to concur with HRT recommendations. Ladies, plan for menopause. If you are fortunate enough to live long enough in these crazy times to reach menopause, dont wait until you start having issues to take care of your : nutrition, weight, mental health. This time of life is also very difficult emotionally for many woman due to change in home life ( kids going off to college perhaps? parents aging) and STRESS WILL do a huge number on your hair and no manner of HRT will fix that. Deal with all of these things early in your life ( 20's , 30's). Establish boundaries, learn who you are and be proud of that. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you allow yourself to be emotionally or physically or socially, or financially abused. Stand tall and make a life for yourself.

@@elizabethwilk9615 Hi Elizabeth, l went through post menopause wondering why my hair shed so badly. My physician did a thyroid blood test on me to find l was hypothyroid…. Low thyroid. It makes your hair fall out and mimics menopausal symptoms. Through finding this information out, l found out that l wasn’t in fact experiencing menopausal symptoms even though l was in post menopause at the time. What l actually had was a slow thyroid which mimics the symptoms us women also get during menopause. I was given a thyroid tablet to take for 2 mths and the hair loss has completely stopped! I must continue to now take this medication for the rest of my life due to the fact that thyroids never regenerate or grow back. Once your thyroid stops working it needs to be either removed or medicated, it’s something you just have to become accustomed to and just get on with your life. My hair stopped shedding and after 2 months of taking this med l now have learnt that post menopause was not even the root cause for the hair loss l had been experiencing. I wish you well & hope some of my story can help you somehow with the hair loss you have been experiencing.

Yes to this information - I’m sharing with my 40-year-old daughters. In my case menopause came with a bang following a complete hysterectomy, and due to other health issues was not able to take HRT but gratefully the hot flashes weren’t as awful as what other women described. The emotional fatigue, lack of confidence, changes in skin, hair, body. - - what a slammer that was to my mental well being. This all came at a time my parents were declining and needing help (dad actually passed) and I felt incapable of coping … getting ready for work I cried because my hair was “thin, gray and stupid-looking” - I actually said that out loud. My poor husband tiptoed around me having no clue what to say/do & fearing an outburst. I sorta chuckle now, having come thru the worst of it, but knowledge is power - had I had more I may not have had to suffer thru all that. Please keep the info coming.

I'm not a vegan, but for another issue altogether 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension, I did a whole lot of research and I started taking soy isoflavone capsules. Soy also provides pseudo-estrogen which may help with reducing hot flashes and weight gain over the long haul. I'm in better health at 71 than I was at 61 and at 48, when I had my last menstrual period. In 2021, I started noticing hair loss, which hadn't happened before, although my hair texture totally changed with menopause. I began taking biotin. It has taken awhile, but some hair has grown back and I noticed improvement most in my nails, which now grow much more quickly and are stronger than they were before menopause. To make sure I get all the nutrients and vitamins I need because I only eat 2 meals a day, and not very much at that, I take a multi-vitamin for women over age 50. Perhaps it is merely psychological, but I also feel better overall since I started doing that about 2 years ago.

I can't do hormone therapy, so I tried oral minoxidil. I've been taking 2.5 mg daily for 7 months. When I went for my 6 month check up, the dermatologist couldn't believe my results. I grew back 75% of my hair! I bought it using GoodRX for only $20 for a 90 day supply. I haven't had any side effects. The hair that grew back is thicker than my fine, naturally curly hair. Yes, and Hypothyroidism in conjunction with Hashimoto also mimics the symptoms of hair loss usually associated during menopause. That’s why many women get so confused. Many people think hair loss is usually connected to menopause solely, however they would better understand hair loss after a check up on their thyroids to get a clear understanding that it may not actually be menopause relatable hair loss, but a thyroid problem.

I was told I had hashimotos antibodies around the time Covid started, then I decided to go off the pill and my periods went crazy, scary and they then told me I must be perimenopausal too (they did notice progesterone was low in blood test after I asked them to check). I already had episodes of hairloss on and off in my life from my mid twenties and now 48 it's started again, worsened by a covid infection last year. I was using Nioxin for my hair, while that helps slow and even stop a lot of hair loss it made my curly hair texture terrible and unmanageable so back to hair loss and square one. More confusing is when I watch videos on what I shouldn't eat with an autoimmune issue it is the very thing you are encouraged to eat for perimenopause, like cruciferous vegetables (to get rid of oestrogen dominance) and things like flaxseed that is really good for hair and health usually that I'm even more confused on what to follow and just am eating it anyway. It's really hard when you have more than one condition a don't know where to start.

Losing my hair was not important, inconvenient but not important. It took me 2 months whilst my body was adjusting on my thyroid medication and now only a mere 8 weeks, my hair has completely stopped shedding. If you are still experiencing hair loss and you are fearing the worst for your hair, do consult a physician to check your thyroid bloods. As you say oestrogen dominance may be causing you to feel that menopause is causing the hair loss, but from my experience l found that a low thyroid mimics the same symptoms that present during menopause so it’s a tough one to work out. If any ladies out there are experiencing hair loss during menopause, please get blood work done on your thyroid to cancel out if that may actually be the root cause for your hair loss. *Low Thyroid mimics Menopause symptoms so please go down that rabbit hole and really get to the root cause of your hair loss. For a man to do this for his wife is a gift in itself. This menopause has so many layers to it and we as women need information to take to our doctor to have an educated discussion. I'm an RN and we didn't even go over this topic at all in school. Babies, yes of course, but not women whose bodies are physiologically changing and it is literally affecting their lives worse than being pregnant like the doctor said here. Thank you for doing this video. Oh by the way, wait till you experience Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!!!

As I get older (and have come off birth control), I notice my hair strands have thinned. I cannot treat my hair the same as I used to. It breaks easily w/certain hair clips and ties, it gets burned easily with the hairdryer, etc, etc. Going a long time without a trim is not an option anymore. It's been quite an adjustment to have this one extra thing to worry about.

Thank you so much. I was never educated on what could happen with perimenopause. My grandmothers were from The Greatest Generation and my mom is from the Baby Boomer Generation. She had a full hysterectomy at 47 and never spoke about the symptoms of perimenopause because of it. As soon as i turned 40, my hair started thinning so much. I've been fighting it for 5 years. Have had to do my own research and trials and tribulations with products. As a woman whose hair has always been my superficial asset, you can imagine the fear of hair loss (ridiculous fear maybe), is. Its a terrible every day fight to know what your hair was to what it is now. Never dyed my hair, hardly ever used heat styling on it (hair dryer or flat iron). And now its "betraying," you.

Thank you so much for doing this video, Justin! We need more videos like this, for sure! My body stopped producing estrogen 25 years ago. After trying different plant based estrogens I was put on Premarin, and I took it for 20 years. It was the ONLY estrogen that worked for me since I had extreme night sweats & hot flashes, like 100 per day. It was miserable. A few years back I stopped taking Premarin because it was no longer affordable. I went without anything for 2 years, then my hair started falling out, by the handful. After my own research, and without any help whatsoever from my GYN, I discovered that testosterone can turn into DHT which then attaches itself to healthy hair follicles causing it to fall out. I still have hair but I bet I have lost more than half the hair on my head. I found a nurse practitioner well versed (and the only person in my small town) in women's hormones. There are so few medical people well versed in women's hormones. She advised me to do a saliva test instead of a blood test because I had been on synthetic hormones for so long. She also suggested I try compounded hormone replacement therapy with Estrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone. I cleared it through the doctors office I was using at the time and after a few trials and errors with the testosterone dose we finally got to a dose that stopped my hair from falling out. However, after 2 more saliva tests and 2 years of trying hormone replacement therapy we realized my body didn't absorb the estrogen and progesterone. I now take and oral estrogen, there isn't a need for me to take progesterone since I had a hysterectomy years ago. (they left my ovaries) I am still on testosterone cream and am happy to report my hair is barely falling out anymore just a little bit here and there. It just doesn't look for feel like it used to. I found a compounding pharmacy in Charleston, SC that does not charge you for the ZRT Saliva test. Other pharmacies charge up to $100 just to mail the kit to you. It's called Pitt St Pharmacy, you need to ask for the owner, she will walk you through everything you need to know. She is amazing and so very helpful! When I interviewed my current GP, I asked him if he would be willing to write the Rx for my hormones and work with the pharmacy in SC. I said to him, "if you aren't willing then I need to go somewhere else.". I am grateful he agreed. I hope you find the help we all deserve with our hormones! It's been a journey, that's for sure!

I'm not against trying to stop the effects of menopause, but in the end, I decided to let nature take it's course. I personally don't want to be chasing beauty until I die. I used to have gorgeous hair. I modeled hair in San Francisco for about 10 years. But I'm 66 now and my hair is very thin in the front. And overall I would say my hair is half as thick as it was in my 20's. I just work with what I've got. Real beauty comes from within. Once you accept that, you can find true peace within yourself.

I will speak with my dr about this next week. When I was 40 I had an emergency hysterectomy. This occurred 1 year after being diagnosed with breast cancer and taking treatments. While being told I needed a hysterectomy immediately I was also told I would go through menopause immediately and as a survivor of breast cancer hormones were out of the question. 20+ yrs later I have never had any side effects of menopause. No mood swings, hot flashes, etc. With that said, my hair is much thinner. I have never known if this was a result of age, hysterectomy, cancer, all 3 or something else. Since then I have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer 3 more times. Hormones are still out of the picture, but will be discussed next week. Great topic today for so many women. Thank you

If you are perimenapausal ASK your doc about HRT. Don't assume they will bring it up to you and do not accept "you don't need it", "HRT can cause cancer", "I don't start HRT until menses has stoped". These were the answers my doc gave to me and I just accepted it because I felt fine. Those last two years before my period completely stopped were easy. The first 5 years after my period stopped were easy. But, seemingly overnight, my whole body seemed to crash and burn. My hair started fallling out, many of my hair shafts had become miniturized and all of it was brittle. But the worst was yet to come! I also started having thyroid problems and I only became aware of that because I gained 20 lbs seemgly overnight. I am not exaggerating that "overnight" thing. I seemed to age ten years in the blink of an eye. This all led to depression at near suicidal level. AND it was the pandemic! I did find a good doctor who got me on HRT and thyroid meds and I am feeling much better now. It has taken me 6 months to loose 10 lbs and my hair loss has not gotten worse. But I am pretty sure my hair loss will never be reversed. I am only 56 so I have slmost half my life to go. Aging is normal but it does not have to be horrifying!

You're within 10 years of menopause (and the 10 years is not an absolute rule anyway). Although your now-pre-existing heart condition may make it too risky for you. What a fantastic and caring doctor. I am 76, long through the change but still get a hot flush from time to time. My generation had it easier than our mothers, for which I am thankful. Having said that, my Mum had no symptoms at all and I had the lot. HRT and testosterone helped later as they became known to be of benefit. I've always had a healthy diet and did have changes to my skin and hair. In recent years I have, at my Mum's GPs suggestion who suffered from alopecia to try Biotin 300mcg without any additional fillers etc. It has worked on my nails and my hair is a lot thicker than it was. My husband has been taking it for some time for his nails (he shaves his head as he is a swimmer) and he's happy with less ridging and splitting. However, the crown is just a bit short I don’t care what I do. My mom said she went through this as well. I have these weird hairstyles that I’ve had to do because of that and it’s a bit disheartening to me, in addition to that, I do have some other menopausal symptoms that you guys are dressed, and I am single. I feel quite alone in this, and I feel like nobody understands no matter how much I try to express myself regarding it. It feels good to at least have a professional explain some things in this video.

Great video! I’ve followed her for a couple years. Thanks for sharing her knowledge with others. I’ve recently started thyroid medicine by demanding to see an endocrinologist, my family Dr. told me for years that I’m in the “normal” levels. Thyroid meds, plus estrodial, has helped me tremendously.

Thank you for posting this awareness video, Justin! I have followed Dr. Haver throughout my perimenopausal/menopausal journey. Women must be their own advocates in this era until we have more medical professionals with Dr. Haver’s knowledge and expertise. The good thing is that talking about menopause is no longer “taboo”. Baby steps, my sisters!! 🙌🏼🩷

I think it is absolutely wonderful that she has turned to primarily only seeing menopausal patients, I work in the medical field for 30 years now, and have worked with numerous types/specialties , I can honestly say so nice to know that one cares enough to turn her knowledge, medical skills, and so on to a specific area finally that really has not been getting enough attention and focus and really caring about it, that is awesome, thank you show much for sharing her information and having her do a little one on one with you, and thank you to her for doing so. I am sure where she practices at the women around there must be just thrilled to be able have her within in their area and her expertise and caring

Soy got such a bad wrap because it had been used as a filler in many terribly processed foods. But organic soy, and other phytoestrogens stopped my menopausal hot flashes immediately when I started taking them. When ever I mentioned this to other women going through menopause they ignored me. I let the peer pressure stop me from doing something I knew would help me. I took a chance and it made a big difference. They are still having problems with hot flashes in particular and I'm pretty much done.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I’ve been suffering for 5 years now. It is unknown territory. My gyno hasn’t been able to help. He only wants to prescribe psychiatric medications. It is unbelievable that this topic is so taboo and not enough information or education out there for anyone including the physicians treating us. Your video brought me to tears because it solidified that I am not crazy. I’m just going through a roller coaster of hormonal changes. All I have been wanting for the last 5 years is to he me again. I’ve been lost and I can’t find myself. And your video basically said that is what it is like. And yes! My hair is absolutely different also. That is another problem I’ve been trying to resolve. I’ve spent so much money on trying new hair products to figure out how to get it back to how it used to be. I cant thank you enough for this video. I am now following Dr. Havers also. ❤

I agree with the Dr on diet, exercise and menopause. I am a life long daily exerciser and a vegan that eats more raw than cooked foods and post menopausal. If it hadn't been for the cessation of the 'obvious' I would not have realized I had gone through menopause, no hot flashes, nothing. Ten years post, doing very well but have seen hair thinning, which is possibly deficiencies and of course age!

I have psoriasis of the scalp. I've noticed a loss of hair recently. I used to have so much hair that hairstylists would comment on it. There is a definite spot at the top/back of my head that I can feel is quite thin. I asked my dermatologist and she said it wasn't due to the psoriasis, it was just a natural part of aging. I'm 66 years old. I plan on living for at least another 20 years. I don't want to be bald during that time! I'll be consulting my primary care physician about this.

It´s good that you´ll see your GP about this, so that they can give you advice and/or treatment based upon your overall health. If you have no contraindication for it, you might want to try horsetail extract (I buy it in organic pure powder form and add a few teaspoons per day to my ginger curcuma "tea"), or another supplement with silicia. I took silicia supplements already as a teenager as has always been super popular in Sweden where I grew up, less in the countries where I have lived since then so therefore I discontinued for many years. For most people it´s taken because of it´s effects on hair and nails, I´ve even heard cancer patients say it made their hair grew back. However lately I´ve learnt that it also has effects on the bones, and that a study has proven it efficient for menopausal women with osteoporisis. Quite interesting.

This is a good one Justin. Women go through hormonal changes throughout life and the extent of changes may certainly depend on diet and quality of health. Hormonal changes don't just fluctuate due to Menopause. I've seen changes beginning with menstruation, mentally and physically in women starting with menstruation, during pregnancy, and following childbirth. those Hormones constantly fluctuate. There hasn't seemed to be many with the knowledge of how to help a women through these challenges. Thank you for this video.

Thank you, Justin, for interviewing Dr. Mary and bringing attention to this topic. Our culture is very youth-centric, especially when it comes to women, and it can make women over 40 feel less valued or even invisible. I have a pretty severe form of androgenetic alopecia, which runs on both sides of my family. What Dr. Mary explained about estrogen modifying the effects of testosterone is exactly what I experienced, except I figured it out through trial and error over the course of decades. My naturopathic put me on estrogen therapy to treat other perimenpause symptoms, and I discovered that it also really helped my hair. Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with estrogen receptor positive breast cancer last year and had to choose between keeping my hair versus keeping my life, so I gave up the estrogen and thought I would have to get a wig. Fortunately, I also follow Dr. Dray, a dermatologist, and watched many of her videos on alopecia. I also consulted with my own dermatologist. I have been using Monoxidil and a red LED helmet, and this has been working pretty well for me. So no need for a wig so far! Just wanted to share in case this helps others. Thanks again!

Ty for sharing your experience..it is SO helpful to me. ❤ I'v only been using a Nioxin regiment for my hair thinning but plan to see a dermatologist for a diagnosis soon. I will probably skip the HRT as I had a bad response to one year's ago. I almost started using Minoxidol..bought it but decided to wait till I get a diagnosis. The spray bottle technique Dr. Mary uses sounds like a much better way to apply it.

@@belindamarie3222, I use the 5% foam version. The directions say that women shouldn’t use it, so I checked with my dermatologist before starting, and he said it was fine. So far so good. I mentioned the foam because foam is way easier to control and never runs, unlike liquid. I bend over so the the part of my scalp where I am applying it faces down. That way, I get more of the product on my scalp than my hair because my hair is hanging down instead of lying flat on my scalp. Definitely ask your dermatologist before trying the foam version because the concentration is higher, but if your derm says it’s okay, it’s a neater way to apply the product and might work even better because it is more powerful than the 2% liquid. I also used Nioxin for years, but it never helped me. I don’t think that it’s a bad product, just that it was not addressing the cause of my hair loss. Nioxin focuses on cleaning out sebum from the follicle, basically unclogging the pores, which can affect hair density. But my hair loss was caused by my follicles’ sensitivity to testosterone, especially if the testosterone isn’t balanced out by estrogen. That’s why I tended to shed hair right before my period and when I was on the pill. Now I am in the late stages of perimenopause, so the problem would only get worse without treatment. So Nioxin can work great for those with the clogged pore problem but will not treat hormone based alopecia. Treatments like Minoxidil and red LED treat androgenetic alopecia specifically, so if that is what you have, then you are likely to have success with those treatments. Good luck!

@@carachow007 Thank you again for sharing. Your experience and explanation is helping me so much. I have to find out what's causing my hair loss..I'm 68 and I have been in menopause for over 10 year's but didn't notice this kind of thinning until a couple year's ago after I was put on BP meds. I did notice a little thinning before that but only in one area on the back of my head when I wore my hair straight i could see part's of my scalp..so I started wearing my natural hair curly hair in curly styles only. Now it's my crown area a couple spot's and generally thinner all over. I bought the Nioxin brand 2% Minoxidol..but haven't opened it yet as I was afraid to begin until I saw a dermatologist..I hate going to doc's so have put if off but now I'm motivated as my hair is getting thinner and is so baby fine and soft. I read on a dermatologist youtube channel that the 2% Minoxidol is not efficient and start with 5% so I may try to return it after I get my diagnosis and consultation. The Nioxin does seem to keep my hair from shedding in shower when I shsmpoo as I monitor my drain catch thing very much and it's less hair there...especially when I wash and treat everyday as they suggest..but still I think my issue is like your's. The bending over using a foam technique is excellent!! I will use it with the Nioxin foam until I see the dermatologist. Thank you so very much for your response. Stay Blessed❣️p.s. I love your name!..I chose it for my beloved kitty (RIP) and I read it means"friend" in Galic. 🙂

@@belindamarie3222, how sweet! Cats are the best! I have two, a brother and sister, gray and ginger tabby respectively, and they are my pride and joy! Are you using the Nioxin shampoo, conditioner, and scalp treatment (as opposed to the Nioxin brand Minoxidil)? I just want to make sure I understand what you are using. If it is helping, then it doesn’t hurt to continue. Which KZitem dermatologist do you follow? I follow Dr. Dray (Dray is short for Andrea, so not Dr, Drey the rapper 😂). She has many videos on alopecia and especially androgenetic alopecia. She’s the one that turned me on to the iRestore red LED helmet. What you are describing sounds pretty consistent with androgenetic alopecia. What happens is the testosterone causes the follicles to shrink, so that the hair becomes finer and more sparse. The thinning follows a particular pattern, as opposed to being even all over or forming bald patches. It’s called male/female pattern hair loss. Common patterns are thinning on top or the sides or at the spot between the top and back of the head, where the hair often grows in a swirl pattern. The back of the head tends to have the most hair. Trust your gut when choosing a dermatologist. If you don’t have a good feeling about the one you are seeing, don’t be afraid to change. I originally started seeing a dermatologist for a totally different reason. I went through two doctors who couldn’t diagnose my problem before finding the right doctor. I stuck with him, and years later, he was the one that diagnosed my alopecia. I also have been going through the perimenopause that has lasted a decade. The end seems nowhere in sight! You will get through this, and things will get better!

The dermatologist on youtube I mentioned isn't one that I follow..although I think I will begin to..I just happened to watch that particular day. I found the video in my saved vid's and her name is Dr. Shereene Idriss..it was called: Haircare Routine..How to stop Shedding and Hair Loss. Ck it out as I think it's a good one. She talks about a procedure she did of injecting blood plasma into her scalp and she demonstrates how she uses her Rogain foam. Apparently her hair loss has recovered.. she said it was hair loss from having Covid..but it was significant enough for that special treatment and to use Minoxidol..she show's a bit of her scalp before treatment. Let me know if you watch it. I will send you the link after I send this reply. Thanks so much for writing me with even more needed info and questions. Loved this video, it really again shows the depth of this channel. I wish more (any) IRL hairdressers would address problems with hair related to conditions/diet/age etc, and also have empathy and understanding for clients just want to be their best version of themselves (as opposed to look like someone else) no matter their problems or age. And if a hairdresser has some knowledge about "hairfriendly" food/lifestyle/supplements, that they share it if the client is asking for help/advice. I have friends who are unaware about how nutrition impacts on hair (and everything else) and think they´ll just take a biotin supplement to address serious hair problems whilc continuing a poor diet (lacking micronutrients, good fats, healthy proteins etc.), and they might listen to advice if it comes from a specialist that takes care of their hair.
