schizophrenia is a made up word to control people it doesn't mean anything it's just a black magic buzzword spell/spelling for "shut up your making me have to question my paradigm or you are making me have to admit god is real". schizophrenia only exists in this satanic society, that hates to admit the earth is flat and God is real, leave the society and it's not even a thing. calling someone schizo is the same as those who call others, crazy conspiracy theorists, tin foil hat, or other names because they are either satanists,fallen angel who live among us, or don't want their paradigm shifted to have to admit God is real. they created psychology to explain away anything to do with God, or the spiritual realm because they don't want to admit they are real.

If "fixing" means preparing the patient to have self-awareness (such that they know themselves and can see the difference between societal ills hoist upon them and their own internal demos) and the tools to combat their sicknesses (and clarity to recognize that they will have little to no impact on society in their lifetime) then I see great meaning in the effort. If "fixing" means getting them back to a state before their neurosis hampered them then yes, there is little meaning as you are basically throwing them back into the sick society with no more tools or protection than they had before they were overwhelmed in the first place.

I was at home at night and sat at my desk watching a documentary of an oil drilling isle. I was warm, had a cozy bed, a full fridge, a loving family, couple of communities, wasn't broke. In the documentary I saw a group of men working under the most miserable conditions imaginable. They were dirty, grimy, freezing half to death, yelling and roaring and drinking and cursing. I was horrified to sense a deep and genuine envy for what they had. My mind immediately retaliated against me with guilt for such a profoundly ungrateful sentiment, but I could not help it. I think it was the yearning for a sense of purpose, of stakes, and a primitive drive for brotherhood that caused my reaction, and I felt that each and everyone of these men had all of that. I knew full well they would likely have envied me just the same.

I think a lot of trouble is people want to have a purpose or meaning to their existence. The fact is, a large majority of us will go unnoticed; extras in the film of life. To help myself cope with this and live happy, I accept this reality. I don't resign myself to it, I accept it. Therefore, I focus on things that make me happy. I do the things I want, I spend time with people I want, I immerse myself in my hobbies, and try not to let what people think about me burden me. I'm therefore making a meaningful life for myself. Self happiness to me equals fulfillment. Of course, this stems from growing up as a loaner. It's not for everyone, and everyone has different problems, but this is how I live day by day.

We’ve replaced questions of good and evil with what is healthy. Which is just as arbitrary. For instance, we say, “Healthy teenagers behave such-and-such…” But the very concept of “teenagers” is a 20th-Century concept. No civilization has ever nailed how a “healthy teenager” should behave. Material wealth has given teenagers a separate identity which we in turn label “ healthy” or “unhealthy.” It is the new well-intentioned dogma. The only way I have found to deal with the postmodern dilemma is to set “personal comfort” as the standard. Then my body tells me what I need. It also moves to be more empathic because I can appreciate other people doing what is necessary to self-soothe or self-comfort.

Technology is pretty amazing. The fact that we can use relay switches to program logic circuits, and then turn them into solid state technology and shrink them down darn near indefinitely is incredible. But yeah, there are other things in life besides that. Sometimes just going outside and looking at the colors of the early morning sky is pretty refreshing. Or to look upon a wife that you have loved for years and to realize you still love her just as much as always. I know those things can always give me a sense of life if I'm ever feeling dead and the push of progress seems pointless.

Perhaps related to this, l never understood excessive quoting of others as a means of communication. If we're to make our own way, why not speak as a person and not in the second person or about mankind. Isn't that a little...mentally ill? Grasping at an artificial sense of community by using the words of strangers, just because they too quote others who do? It seems to me almost like a proto-microchip in the head. Why? Because it's part of you, so it's self-hating, abusive towards yourself. Is it any wonder I too suffered a lot abd long enough, when that idea was still prevalent in my mind? An excellent video. I wholeheartedly agree with your thesis. I especially enjoyed the reflection of our modern predicament against the background of hunter-gatherer groups. We have drifted far out to the sea of culture, and the shores we departed long ago, representing our natural place in the ecosystem, are but a faint memory now. It's truly no wonder why we, despite our material quality of life, suffer so deeply from mental anguish in the modern world. A change of course, and a thorough reconnect with our natural roots, and nature at large, on a global scale, is gravely in need, before we kill the planet and ourselves in our frantic chase of culturally (mis)placed, capitalistic values.

Before language, the ego did not exist, because an ego needs a concept to outline what 'it' or the 'I' is. What am I? That is one of the first thoughts or questions we all have as a baby. That is what the name provides. A concept for the ego to begin to develop and try to 'know thyself' and further distinguish what 'it' is. I am Austin. But who or what is Austin? Is Austin a good or bad person? What makes someone bad or good? What is love? What is real? What is God? The movie inception was about the power that ideas/concepts have over our mind once the ego attaches itself to it. How do you define yourself and your worth? By your career or how much money you make? By your family, children, or the woman you are currently with? Because your concept of yourself is incredibly important as to the life that you will live. If the concept of yourself is that you are worthless, you will lose the desire to live and your life will end up being worth less than if your self concept was that you are worthwhile and valuable. If life attracts what we assume to be true, it is very important to consider what you assume to be true about yourself and of life. Many times, it is better to just tell yourself that you don't know what you are, you don't need to have a self concept to just be. You don't have to define what you are. Change is constant.

The main reason for the rise in incidences of mental illness is really simple. They simply didn't look for these things before in most places so it would have to be very severe to even be recognised. If they did show up they'd sometimes be attributed to other things. Religious delusions were treated very differently in past times (see Joan of Arc). The entire language around the symptoms of mental illnesses was very different too and more often viewed as a weakness of character (read accounts from the 1880s about how they talked about people who suffered disorders - it was often very judgemental). And, most of all, psychology as a subject has mushroomed through the 20th century as far as diagnoses go. It's a young area of research in its current guise and so has grown fast as a diagnostic tool. You can make cases for a disillusionment in society, increasing neuroses, existential fears, a species that is more self-regarding after the ''century of the self'', and whatever else, on top of that but the above accounts for most of the increase in recognising mental disorders -- we started looking at it rather than away from it. We treat the subject differently now than we have in the fairly-recent past, and very differently than we have in times before that. Nobody was asking the average peasant centuries ago whether they felt depressed. No-one had the inclination unless it was very directly obvious and threatening greater society. We barely had the language for most things. So, that's the first thing that shouldn't be overlooked. You'll always find more of something when you look for it and when those with it have a more amenable environment in which to bring it forward into the light rather than simply being hidden in the shadows as ''eccentric'' or ''weird'' or ''let's not talk about that'' or even ''your troubles are your own buddy''. Areas of research that are young will always see their sphere of influence grow in time because to fully recognise something you first need to have the language to explain it, and then an audience with some common understanding of the concept. The second bit about why we might see more mental illnesses is the crux of what this video is talking about. I don't have definite answers for that. I can make vague questioning comments about how we've become more self-regarding probably and how when a person has less stresses from their natural environment and day to day life that they might then have more of an eye on this inner lack of contentment with life that can arise within them. Perhaps our expectations have grown? All these things might be true or not. I don't know. I know people tend to insert their own biases into this sort of thing when suggesting problems and solutions so I'm trying not to do that here -- sell a philosophy or religion or lifestyle or whatever -- pretend I have answers to it all. I've not done the research even if I know some of the data about suicide rates and ''prozac generations'' and all the rest of it. But the first thing is very important and should be mentioned whenever we compare rates of instances of mental illness over time and/or place. We have to look beyond mere data at things like ''will you find more instances of something when people feel they are less likely to be marginalised by coming forward?'' and ''in centuries past did we have similar behaviour that was given a different name and ascribed reasons?. The answer to both of these, as far as mental illnesses go, is an overwhelming yes. I've seen it in my own lifetime; never mind going back a century. That sits atop any further considerations about why rates might vary across times, countries, development index ratings, gender and whatever else. Long point. Hopefully understandable.

That's my objective take. My subjective opinion is that as I grow older then normal society itself seems less normal than we initially assume and the average man seems to tend towards ignorance, narrow-mindedness and cognitive biases driven by emotional stresses. Maybe we're all messed up but some people are less genuine than others because almost everyone is more consumed with portraying an image of themselves (see O'Neill's Hickey) rather than being honest? My depressed and almost anti-natalist opinion is that life is more curse than blessing. They call that depressive realism I believe (those that accept the term). As such, I probably shouldn't spread my depression out (because it can affect others) so these sort of thoughts tend to be unvoiced. And, so, you wonder....is this genuine insight or depression speaking now? If the truth is depressing then how to voice it without it being considered depression speaking? I'm 44, have been mired in this stuff since as long as I can remember, have read everything I can on the subject (have barely read anything that affected me that didn't breach the subject in some way) and yet....it's probably wiser to aim towards being ignorant, or at least it feels that way a lot of the time. Think less. Maybe the unpalatable truth is that we are thrown into a losing game from the start and it requires a disingenuous selfishness verging on the point of sociopathy to endure it all? That offends people though. Doesn't mean it can't be true even if it's considered bad form to give voice to it all. Probably better sticking with the objective take about the difficulties of quantifying a matter that is treated differently and defined differently across different time periods and locations.

The ' affective disorders ' like depression and anxiety are diagnosed when they arent there in order to make money, period. @Deborah Dean Since we don't share the concept of "spiritual need," I'm gonna opt out of this debate. It will ultimately be unfruitful, since we won't be able to agree on a core premise. However, I would encourage you to consider life in the 1950s, back when seeking help for the nightmares you got from "shellshock," caused by watching your friends get shot or blown up in the war, meant that you were weak, rather than experiencing a completely normal reaction to adverse stimuli. Or the 1800s, back when mental health treatment almost universally meant long-term in-patient care, often against the patient's will. Or consider the 1700s and earlier, back when mental health care fundamentally didn't exist, and showing any deviation from the norm probably meant incarceration.

@@swindler1570 all that is very situationally dependent. But doctors have always known shell shock was a medical, not moral or character, disorder. By spiritual I mean needs for value, self determination, emotional needs ry hat family and friends typically provide. Denial of those spiritual needs will result in insanity and mental disorder. Tje biggest true progress in mental health, aside from overall understanding of the brain, is pharmaceuticals, mainly the antipsychotics, not the antidepressants . Just an opinion: Decadence and complacency combined with challenging old traditions or values rapidly eat away at the soul. Depression, misanthropy, and nihilism have been on the increase due to modernity chipping away at what makes humans, well, human. For the record, I'm in my early 20s. I say that because I mostly see this type of thinking in people of my age or closer to their 30s specifically. People are quick to adopt a victim complex because modern society holds victims to the highest degree and puts weakness on a pedestal for whatever reasons. We live in an age where we have more options than any generation of history so it petrifies us because we don't want to make the "wrong" choices in life. People are terrified of failure, being alone, and feeling like their lives don't matter. It's not much surprise that more and more people, in the west specifically, are feeling like this in droves.

I don't accept the claim there was a rise in the incidence of mental illness in the 19th cent. Mental illness was seen as devilry akin to possession until the topic was included as an aspect of physical medicine at the beginning of the 1800s. This new science required subjects to study. They did not study sane people, but those with mental abnormalities. Initially, intellectual impairment was included as mental illness, boosting the numbers of people to study. Also required was a lexicon to describe observed behaviours - and that provided a hook on which to hang a diagnosis, as well as a rubric for categorising behaviour.
@redsparks2025

You are partly right. Prior to the 19th century, people with mental illness were cared for by family members, who quietly attended to their needs in rural areas. These would of gone largely unrecorded. But with the dawn of the Industrial Age, and its accompanying growth of crowded cities, saw the shift in the care of mentally ill people to public psychiatric asylum or small private asylums for the wealthy. In any case as the as world population increased one would expect more recorded cases of mental illness but maybe the "percentage" would only slightly increased. One percent of a hundred is different from one percent of a thousand.

So many existential philosophers-and the video essayists who simp over them-are insanely gloomy talking about how meaningless everything is. They lament that there’s an existential vacuum we need to fill, and wonder what we’re to do with this “discovery.” Yet all the while they don’t recognize that they HAVE been filling their vacuums with something: the POSITIVE ASSERTION that “existence is meaningless.” That’s not a vacuum...that’s a deliberate statement that fills the void with a kind of “negative meaning.” They haven’t removed God-they’ve replaced him with the Negation of God, a kind of omnipotent anti-spirit. Instead of the absence of objective meaning, they assert the PRESENCE of meaninglessness. If you can get past this stage in your philosophy, you can reach a pretty liberating place. Existence itself can become a kind of meaning; moments can become full of subjective meaning if you pay attention, and no longer need to be gestures at something other than themselves. Voids are full liberation. If you’ve defined the essence of that void, it’s no longer a true void. (Yes, easier said than done, and if you have genuine mental health issues, this kind of framework alone won’t carry you. But eliminating those positive assertions of meaninglessness from your worldview is a great place to start.) To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes, “Look at zero, and you see nothing. Look THROUGH zero, and you see the world.” 💙

As an extremely secular person I believe that the meaning in life was actually revealed through religion or the philosophy of it. Life itself is a condition we experience and in the end nomatter how meaningless it might be in the end we still are able to experience it. That's the only truth, even if we are a microsecond of spark in a macrocosmos or darkness or the weaking universe looking at itself, even if there is no afterlife, we still have the ability to experience and that's enough so cherish it with all your heart and make it so others can cherish it too. In the grand scheme the only thing that matters is the experience and struggle of existence.

I’d say atleast have a goal, don’t give up on relationships either just simply wait for the right ones. think of these things as “I’m going to die anyways might as well ...”. I’m sure deep down you already know all of this, but it’s good to bring it to the forefront of your mind and truly think about it. It never fails to amaze me how many places you find someone identifying problems and how few places there are offering solutions. When "God Died" his fan clubs lost favor with the populace. Right, wrong or otherwise, when we started losing churches we also lost structured environments in which to foster community and offer/get social support. Civic, cultural and ethnic identity clubs began to also lose favor with the public and even the local pubs have all but disappeared. What we need is a return of individuals to community involvement, even being a player on a softball team has way of connecting a person to a community larger than one's self.
@peppermintgal4302
2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure this was caused specifically by the reduced use of churches... indeed, we are plagued by alienation even in "Bible country" and other religious territories in the modern world. I think the issue is more simple... our cities arent livable. They're built around cars. Shopping centers are massive conglomerations that are hours away from many urban communities and require cars to navigate to safely. Public transportation is often underfunded, but where it exists, there's a bit more vitality to the city. I think we can rebuild communities by investing in pedestrian friendly city planning.
@peppermintgal4302

And finally, I think this kind of community building has another benefit: communities will blend into eachother, which helps avoid those old divisions of ethnicity, religion, etc.. @@peppermintgal4302 Taking from your assessment I could conclude that Automobiles are to blame for the disintegration of communities. In my case I was born in an enclave of Detroit known as "Poletown" If you where of Polish or other Slavic descent you where automatically seen as being family. White flight drove my parents to the newer neighborhoods being built on the fringes of an ever expanding metropolitan area in the late 60's. We no longer had access to our older relatives, the Polish American Club, The Slavic American Club etc. Being a Pollock still meant you where family in our new neighborhood although the conglomerate of other ethnicities attending Catholic mass on Sunday somehow left that part of the community unanchored. True, we where all equal but somehow still separate. Granted, that brought a great mix of diversity within families but as the ethnic lines became blurred so did the allegiance to the church. There’s a wide range of lived experience. But if you lived in Ancient Greece, even if you were hearing angry or violent things, maybe Ares was visiting you. It was a mystic experience and not a threat.

Though the societal developments you discuss are most likely indeed going on... it is important one does not ascribe developments to the world about which one has insight (or a change of perspective) merely due to simply becoming older/wiser. Take for instance the fact that in every decade there are songs that basically boil down to "These troubled times of ours" (amoral, or treacherous, etc.) - surely, not every decade can be especially "notable" for such circumstances; rather, it is often the age of the performer that is the best "explanation" for the chosen theme - around the age of 35-45 most people kind of "realize" the "true nature" of existence (that, say, genuine friendship is actually very rare, that people close to one can betray you, that ideals and intentions count for very little in the real world, etc.) and so one might be tempted to believe the *times* to be rough/depraved/evil but actually nothing much has changed except one's own insight and knowledge.

I love the the modern world, glad i was born at this time, the music, art, food, electrics, internet, fashion, i am the working poor, in my country, but i live better then any kings and queens of history. I had nothing to do with it, but with my computer, cell phone i can even look at the surface of Mars and Venus, even hear sounds from those planets, think of that one....this modern world suits me well.

A feeling of gratitude such as this could go far to improving the psyches and outlooks of many. We forget sometimes that it’s not normal to be happy all the time. Happiness is not a destination, but something that happens from time to time along the way. Without knowing the darkness it’s harder to really feel the light. People need to understand and accept that their life will never be perfect, but with the right attitude you can carve out your own bearable even joyful at times existence.

Your channel is exactly what I needed during my (continued) existential crisis. I was beginning to lose hope that there were un-brainwashed people out there, and was near giving up on trying to speak on these matters. Thank you!

Either we’re trapped in definitions we can’t see or change or we’re flailing to make something stick and insecure in our direction. The best way to live is where the individual controls his or her meaning yet there’s a connection to life that doesn’t make this completely relative and self-indulgent. We’re too mediated and atomized and when there is a culture it’s superficially tribal. We’re relearning culture after rebelling against it for fear of tyranny.

It seems like tribal culture would be more adaptable than the culture of a large society. Fewer people can be more flexible. Culture could be more inflexible in large groups which could possibly lead to longer lasting tyranny? Just throwing ideas out...
