Many beginner players only practice their technique. However, the difference between club players and professionals is that the latter practice their confidence around the table, too.
Snooker is not only about spending hours around the snooker table and learning the potting angles. Remember, snooker is first and foremost a brain game. A significant part of how good your game is is determined by how you feel, think and what your level of confidence is. If you want to be much more consistent with your snooker, you have to try to raise the level of your mental approach to every shot, every different situation.
There is no professional or non-professional snooker player who has not experienced the fear of missing a shot. It is set in our brains to worry if we will make a good shot or if it will be disappointment. It’s all about CONFIDENCE. If you are feeling confident, then there is no fear of missing!
Just try to involve some simple rules for training your inner confidence in your daily snooker practice:
1] If I have to pot the white ball into the corner pocket, that means I am 1000% confident, because I know that I canNOT miss;
2] Put a red ball as close to the pocket as possible. Place the cue ball about 145 cm/57 inches away from the red (145 cm in approx. the length of a standard cue). Then pot the red. Again, this is 1000% confidence - you know that you are not going to miss;
3] Put the red ball on the blue spot. This time the distance between the cue ball and the red should be the same as in the previous shot. This is the exact same shot - the same distance, straight shot. BUT the difference to the previous shots is that this one looks much harder and longer. You are starting to think that you can miss and this makes you do different things to cope with the difficulty.
But this happens ONLY in your head. Try to play this shot with the same confidence you played the previous shots.
Practice your confidence for JUST 5 MINUTES EVERY DAY. Your will start to look at your shot from a different perspective. There are no difficult shots. It is just your imagination and the fear of missing that make things look more complicated than what they really are.
Start looking at your shots in a more positive way. Teach yourself to maintain that feeling of 1000% confidence for EVERY shot and I promise, you will achieve AMAZING things!
