It’s not a sprint. You’re only 18 and qualified for Worlds. Maybe you need to go up a weight class and skip Worlds. There has to be an element of Fun in this or you’ll burn out very quickly. I wish you the best

Joy, as a young female lifter myself, you don’t know how much you’ve inspired me. You’re so precious, you have an amazing personality, and are so so strong. Mentally and physically. I know this might be though, but I promise what ever you choose to do it’ll be okay. You’ll do so amazing. And I promise it’s totally okay to not compete at Worlds to give your body and mind rest. Pls don’t stress, keep going, you can do this.

I've only been watching for a few months. But I've been lifting for 25 years. I've been coaching highschool sports for well over a decade and I've been training our girls in the gym for about 5 years. I want you to know that you are an animal. You're amazing, kid. I've only seen a handful of athletes (male and female) that have your dedication and drive. I show my own daughter your videos because of how inspiring you are. Wins and losses are fleeting. The journey is what makes you a legend. You are on the path. Please stay the course. Love your vids. Keep em coming! 💪

Oh Joy hunny I almost started crying. I can see how this is a hard decision. I’m 16 years old debating if I want to do power lifting because I love the sport but the nutrition side is intense asf. JOY! I completely understand the feeling you have. I hope to encourage you to push yourself to a point where you break through your limit but not to the point where you break your spirit. I really hope you know that we would rather you do something you might regret now and go back and do something the next year at a heavier weight and have the win that much larger. You are an inspiration! Whether you succeed or fail, you will win. We support you in every aspect of what you decide.

Hi Joy, as a fellow powerlifter I’ve had struggles with eating and achieving a certain weight. I want to tell you that no matter what it is, your mental health always comes first. Nothing ever is worth you being in this state right now. I suggest to put yourself first and take a break, have the best time you can, as long as you need. With time everything will come to fruition. You’re young and there’s a long way to go. To be 18 and having the lifting numbers you do is an exceptional achievement. Always supporting you❤

I come from a background of addiction. When it came to self love I was giving a assignment to look in the mirror for 30 days and tell myself “I like Joel, I love Joel and Joel is okay” then smile big like a dumbass and it gets more comfortable as time going on to look at yourself. Take out a piece of paper and write honest positive affirmations about yourself. ( I make people laugh) ( I’ve been told many times I inspire people) and write in the bottom. “ am I worth it. You are and you got this. We are our worst critics.

Girl! Joy joy! You are 10000000% not a failure!!! I fucking adored watching you compete ❤ you inspire so many people to lift and to try and be stronger! It’s okay to not be okay & it’s the most beautiful thing to put yourself out there like you do and own your vulnerability. I personally think you should prioritise your mental health ultimately & feel better about yourself, you won’t be a disappointment regardless of your decision. You’re so young and the worlds stage won’t disappear so quickly for you, you might even come back even stronger in future so don’t put more pressure on yourself. We will support you regardless. ❤ stay strong girl! You got this! 💪🏻❤️

Joy hopefully a video like this and watching yourself will motivate you go on. Nobody thinks your a failure. Nationals you still did amazing. Your here to push the weight up not hold yourself down. Get your rest. Take some days off your only 18. Listen to your coaches listen to your fans. Do what makes you happy. Powerlifting is a hard sport. Remember you have achieved so much especially as a female without the stages.

Hi Joy. First off, that was really hard watching you cry. I get it though, you’ve been prepping for so long and to fall short of your own expectations at Nationals must’ve hurt. But you didn’t fail. You set pb’s and got selected for Worlds. Failure only happens when you don’t give it everything or you don’t identify things you could do better next time. Also, 100% you are going to Worlds. Take the week off, have some pizza, some soda, whatever floats your boat. When its time to start, switch on, focus and commit. Don’t look back in a few years time and think “ I should have done it”. Much love and support from Sydney, Australia.

You said it dear. You are putting a lot of pressure on yourself. Give yourself some time to make your decision. Nothing will be decided in a day or in the heat of the moment. As a coach I explain to my players that things can look very different in the heat of the moment vs when the pressure is off. Take a breath for yourself and figure out what is best for you. Remember nothing is permanent even though we build it up in our heads to be permanent. You can always change your mind and do what is best for you. Take care and best of luck.

I'm so proud of you Joy for fighting so hard! It also helps me to see you share your feelings like this because a lot of times I feel alone. It's nice to see that even elite athletes struggle with it too. Sports in general are mentally challenging, but being in a weight class sport is an extra level of stress because you have to be on point 24/7. I'm in my off season and the whole weight thing rough, even now. Plus I'm dealing with an injury that keeps me from lifting. Keep pushing towards your dream and inspiring people the way that you do! Wishing you the best! Brighter days are ahead. :)

1) If the diet is putting you under notable mental strain then maybe it can be reworked with a coach or dietitian to be more rewarding or at least varied while maintaining the numbers you need. Mental responses to diet can be just as important as physical ones. Maybe the plan isn’t working at its best in its current form. 2) If you look back on this choice 5 years in the future from right now, what would you want to say to yourself? That might help guide your decision now. 3) Good luck with your decision no matter which way it goes. You’re awesome either way and you’re not a failure.
