@HeavyMetal-HardRock

The reason why he gets a lot of dislikes is because he goes against all the science projects you learned in high school or middle school. He's wrong. A lot of the times. I learned in junior high and in high school the pressure does increase in a shaken bottle of soda. He's trying to undo everything that we've ever learned and try to say that it was wrong lol which is just ridiculous. Go ahead buy a bottle of pop. Shake it up really hard. You can feel how tight it gets that tightness is pressure. So yes, the pressure does rise in a shaken bottle of soda. And if you put mentos in a bottle of Coke, the pressure rises. He thinks we're all morons and we'll just believe whatever he says. When conventional science is against, even what he's saying.

Dry ice sublimates with a vapor pressure which, at room temperature, is enough to cause the bottle to explode (and from one of the King of Random's earlier videos, apparently even enough pressure to form _liquid_ CO2 (and the soda bottle can hold that pressure. They're incredibly hard to burst)). Here we have dissolved gases coming out and that also has a maximum pressure-the pressure they were dissolved into the liquid at, or in other words, the initial pressure of the bottle.

This is where you take the heater (or the contents... magnesium) of an MRE, put it in a water bottle (not too full) and put the cap on it. Do this outdoors as the bottle WILL blow. It's best to use thick plastic like Gatorade bottles or thick water bottles as the thin, cheap plastic will burst through before enough pressure builds up and you'll get a "wet toot" sound instead of a nice boom! Normally I really like your videos because you do a thorough job of explaining things as well as showing them in great detail, buuuuuut on this one I feel like it was half baked. You used a 20oz DIet Coke and our one mento in there. That would be like would you use your vacuum chamber to test things but don’t take them to full vacuum. Again, normally your videos are great but this one felt very low grade unfortunately. I really hope you can make another video with different size bottles and different types of soda; and especially way more mentos.
@vis9487

Did any of you get the point of the video? @Narwadeshwar Sahai, the guy clearly explained why mentos and CO2 have absolutely nothing to do with pressure, even if you throw in a million mentos it will just let the CO2 leave the drink, the molecules just moved from one place to another, no matter how fast that is happening. That's the easiest explanation I can give you. @Jeremyatrujillo, literally the same explanation is on point for you too.. Just try to hear and understand what the guy is trying to explain.

It is also the way rock candy is made. You take a supersaturated solution of sugar and water and place a wooden stick inside of it. On that stick you place a tiny lump of crystalized sugar. It forms a nucleation or seeding site for other sugar crystals to latch onto. The same thing works for the mentos, one CO2 bubble sticks to you, then 2, then 4, 8, and so on. Kidney stones also grow in your body in the same way.

When I was younger (and stupider!), a friend of mine and I used to do experiments with dry ice... His mom worked for a medical testing lab and would occasionally bring home a block of dry ice for us to play around with. So we did the usual chunks of dry ice in the warm water and then in an enclosed plastic 2 liter bottle (it expanded to almost a sphere and then finally exploded). Then...one of us got the bright idea of putting it in a *glass* 2 liter bottle (hard to find those anymore) to see what would happen.... Well, after an hour or so it still had not exploded, so we figured we would "help it"... So one of us threw a small rock at it and (no exaggeration) it sounded like a hand grenade had gone off! My mom and dad came running outside, saying "What the HELL was THAT?!" Looking back on it, my friend and I should not have made it into adulthood...

My explanation to your question is: So basically the can is full of soda to the brim and not much space where anything else could fit inside. When you shake it gas is released and has nowhere to go. So pressure is technically increased temporarily because the gas is not dissolved into the liquid and it is trying to escape but has nowhere for it to go, this then causes the can to bulge as the gas forces against the can trying to escape. But it will go back to equilibrium without being opened and the Co2 will dissolve back into the liquid and it will be less firm again. I think he explained it wrong. There will be no permanent increase in pressure as there is only a certain amount of Co2 in the bottle/can and there is no way to make more. You shake -> gas releasing from liquid -> gas tries to escape bottle/can but can't -> bulging can; leave it to sit -> back to equilibrium and gas will dissolve back into liquid. Bulges may stay as metal (aluminium) is warped. Does this now make sense?
@jfmezei

2 questions: 1- it was said the Metons trick woked only with diet coke. Could a different chemical reaction be happening with an incredient in diet coke but not in coke? 2- when I was youger, the shake can before you give it to friend really worked, whereas now, it appears to be far less of an impact. Is it possible that since the 1980s, they changed formulation of drinks so the foaming doesn't happen as much?

Or just glue/tape mentos on inside of cap, close it, then shake and flip bottle around for desired effect.

In fact you can increase the pressure by freezing a soda as well (when the water in the soda forms ice - it can't hold the CO2 anymore). Everyone who has put an aluminium can with soda in the freezer (to get it cool faster) and then then forget it, will know. It can make quite a mess, LOL!!

Alsoooo.. shaking must cause local pressure increases in the direction of inertia. Like your video of driving a car forwards with a balloon inside. Sudden deceleration such as shaking against a solid body could cause very high localized pressure. It would be awesome to visualise this perhaps with a dyed viscous fluid in transparent container and high speed video ;) Thanks for your enjoyable and educational videos.

Thank you for sharing these cool videos!! So basically a container or a plastic bottle will never be able to pop, because the fluid inside of it can never get to a greater pressure. Makes a lot of sense when you think about it actually. I guess the only reason a plastic bottle or container will pop when you drop it, is if the plastic or metal gets a weakened structure that'll make it pop?

That is not how you do coke and mentos, and I’ve heard that they changed the recipe and that they don’t explode like they used to. I used to get a 1l Diet Coke drink some, drop like 3-4 mentos in and twist the cap half way on( just enough to hold to pop in) then you smash the bottle on the ground and the cap comes flying off and the bottle went flying,. Good old days, why they gotta ruin all the fun?

That's just not true, yes it's "just bubbles" but they represent expansion and the amount of expansion the bottle can handle is not infinite. If you but enough mentos in a sealed bottle of soda, it will breach the confides of the soda bottle.

What about you leaving the bottle open longer than the other people did, and you poured out some of it, plus using only one Mento. Maybe the other people used more Mentos? What about the difference in firmness of a non-shook bottle and a shook bottle? I think I've felt a difference before, but maybe I'm wrong.

yea he's definitely wrong about it not increasing pressure. Shake an unopened bottle and it will become more firm.

Try to understand bro it's all about equilibrium. In this system it keeps on getting back to its equilibrium. All mentos does is provide a surface for nucleation doesn't even react with the drink. You need something to react and generate more gas in a short amount of time so that it fails to attain equilibrium. Only then explosion can occur.

A friend was a chemistry major, and back in the days of 16oz glass Coke bottles with the plastic lids (mid-'80s), we used to put HCl in there with some tightly wound aluminum foil, seal the lid, and after about a minute or so it would explode bigtime.

If the gas in the bottle doesn't increase the pressure then why is the bottle harder to compress / squeeze after you shake it? Surely the pressure increases...

This is false because when you shake up a bottle it gets more firm and if you shoot it or slam it on the ground it explodes and how does it spray out soda will a strong stream without pressure and also when you shake it up it is easier to shoot with air soft BBS from far away and get it to shoot out a stream of soda than not shaken up

Really great vid but why the rubbish music, at some points in the vid i can hardly hear what you are saying. Believe me the music really adds nothing to your informative vids, or maybe you dont like hard of hearing people or plain discriminate against them. Please cut the music i really want to stay subscribed, but if you play music over your voice i may as well unsubscibe like some of my colleagues have alredy done.

Just came across this which reminded me of how I created a huge *bang* by accidentally leaving a 2L bottle of carbonated water in the freezer overnight. I discovered it the next day, and placed it on a kitchen worktop. An hour or so later there was a huge *bang* and the kitchen was covered in ice and the plastic bottle was shredded. I keep meaning to try this again (but under safer conditions). I imagine the CO2 came out of solution and over-pressurised the plastic bottle.

Okay, first of all the density of a 16 oz. bottle is much higher than a 2 ltr. bottle. Also the jackass that blew up the 2 ltr soda put about 4 or 5 in. So basically the larger vessel is thinner, thus weaker, yet it holds more liquid causing a harsher reaction. One final point(very important) would be to crush the candy slightly for a quicker reaction as well. You might consider something a bit more rigid to hide behind instead of the plexi too.

Hi there, I liked the explanation. Why does Baking Soda and Vinegar in a bottle explode? I assume it creates a reaction producing gas..? I'll Google it but would love to see an explanation in your videos :-) if you haven't already done one...

I forgot a Pepsi in my truck here in Arizona durning the summer so inside of truck was about 120-130 degrees range and the Pepsi was in there all day. I was driving home after work with the Pepsi on the front seat and I had to stop real fast (dumb drivers) and Pepsi rolled off the seat and hit the dash and exploded I even saw a flash of light I think. I thought someone threw a grenade into my car and I was about to die instead I just had a bunch of Pepsi under my glove box and on the matts. It was weird because I think I saw a flash of light but how is that possible? Maybe do a show about exploding Pepsi cans in hot truck test video.

I noticed you said that the mentos just gives the co2 a surface to stick to, and that’s why the gas comes out faster. Then why do other small objects not quicken the “reaction”? Or do they? Also, note that I may have misunderstood you, as your point was not very clear, no offense, so tell me if I did. Thanks!

So if the part about the mentos increasing the speed that CO2 leaves the liquid, then couldn't you use ANY thing that increases the speed of chemical (or physical) reaction, like the things they use in chemistry to do just that? I forget what they're called, stir rocks or something like that?

Wait but one time at school... I had a can of coke in my jacket pocket in a moshpit kinda game we had. (it was like Sumo with more contenders and less grabs.) but aye afterwards when that can settled it exploded luckily firing shrapnel through the pocket away from my body. How did that happen?

Question - I took a soda bottle, opened it and poured a little bit out. I squeezed the upper part of the plastic bottle, closed it firmly and let it sit for a whole day to get to equilibrium. Then, I shook the bottle real good - and it straightened right away and wasn't wrinkly anymore - Hasn't the pressure increased??

If you use bathroom cleaner the liquid one called THE WORKS not the new thicker version the regular water one and foil it will explode but it's very loud and pretty sketchy but you have about 45 seconds before the chemical reaction happens it is pretty crazy this is how you do it .step one make a whole bunch of balls of foil about the size of a marble fill the bottle up about a quarter or halfway up . Then you pour the works in there and close it then run away from it because it diffinitly isn't mentos and coke then watch the coolness happen the bottle gets extremely fat then explodes super loud like a shot gun ...you can get the works at dollar store or Walmart it's actually toilet bowl cleaner it has a weird looking neck spout thing ..you should try that

When we were kids, we used to play with this a lot. We used the white menthos pack, and actually put 7 menthos in one 1lt bottle. It got rock hard the instant the two touched, and then we smashed the bottle into the ground. The sheer jet of coke was enough to make it fly for like 70mts. After some time, the menthos pack changed, it was no longer white but blueish white (the same flavour of menthos), and with those menthos the reaction was laughable compared to the white ones.. This was around 2005/06 in argentina.

I'm not sure if your experiment gives any conclusion. The change in pressure could be small and when you measure it you released some of the gas. It may not be accurate. So what's the standard way to measure the pressure of gas? I'd try Utube... I mean, a U-shaped glass tube. With water at bottom, seal one end to the bottle, the other end open, mark the water level. Release the Mentos and see if the water level changes.

Why when you get a fanta drink when you open it it explodes even if you didn't shake it shake it with just a warm climate it's enough to make it explode once you put it in a cold room. Like if I was outside when there was a 110 the bottle still closed but once you put in a room that's 75゚ it explodes if we don't open it slowly

because it is hot. That is why it explodes.Temperature increases the pressure.

Im sure alot of the vids had. Maybe a pellet gun? Hell even binarry targets To pop the bottle out of frame. Alot of the videos I remember were on snowmen. So it would be easy to hide other stuff in the snow around it. I know they will take off like a rocket when thrown up, cap pops off when it hits the ground. But without outside help it doesn't seem very likely that the bottle will pop on it's own. I guess it would have been just as easy to scratch a weak point in the plastic bottle off camera as well though 🤔. Then all it needs is a slight pressure increase. In theory.

If you want to explode a plastic bottle try the same trick with dry ice in a bottle that is half full of water(warm water works faster I believe) then screw the lid on. You can give it a shake, but don't wait too long toss it or it might explode in your hand. It can make a pretty big bang. This comment is directed to the action lab and not advised for anyone else to try it. So dont try this at home, unless you are an adult and take all responsibility for what happens. I take no responsibility for what happens if anyone reading this trys this experiment.

Isn't this just a function of Boyle's Law? As the amount of gas that can be dissolved in a liquid is proportional to the pressure in the vessel? So that the air pressure will equal what volume of gas the liquid can hold?
