Samantha is a young woman living in a new apartment, alone except for the stray cat from the nearby alleyway that she takes in, despite the strict "no pets" policy of her landlord.
She dubs the kitten "Meow" and bonds with her pet, whose often her closest companion during a tricky life transition. But as a series of shockingly bloody occurrences pile up around her, Samantha begins to think her sweet kitty may be capable of murder.
Director Chris Jopp has crafted a dark and gleefully whimsical horror short, which mashes up 80s slasher flicks with elements of camp, comedy and film noir.
The tension is expertly ratcheted up with muscular camerawork, and moody cinematography that brings to mind great horror classics by Stephen King and other genre greats, which grounded horror in genuine emotional anxieties about life.
Like stories and adaptations like CARRIE, this short has its pulse on the real existential dilemma that Samantha faces as a young adult truly on her own for the first time, making it relatable.
The addition of goofy humor adds a dose of levity to the genuine chills and thrills the film provides, making MEOW a genuinely fun ride in a twisted house of mirror, and an experience viewers won't easily forget.
