CORRECTION: It appears that I misinterpreted the lava-avalanche earthquakes as harmonic tremor. As alkautsar corrected me below, no such harmonic tremor has occurred since late 2020. If harmonic tremor were to occur (it isn't), it would be indicative of a major imminent eruption. Original Comment: This new eruption from Merapi, although relatively large, was luckily fairly harmless due to the lack of tourists near the volcano (at midnight). Merapi in the past has produced far longer reaching pyroclastic flows, including one that travelled 15 km in 2010 (during a VEI 4 sequence).

Just a clarification. I have access to Merapi's seismograph, and I have an acquaintance who worked for Merapi's observation. I just want to say that no harmonic tremor was recorded in Merapi on March 9th. Since the start of the activity (late 2020), Merapi never produced a single tremor, moreover, harmonic tremor. Why do I point it out? Well, it's because if harmonic tremor really happens, that means the internal pressure in Merapi is immense, which is not true. So far, Merapi never reached an extreme number (>600) of internal quakes (volcano-tectonics and hybrid) since 2011, which means no serious imminent eruption signs ever have been recorded (just like the 2010 eruption). On the contrary, you pointed out that this eruption was triggered by heavy rainfall. I agree with that, but a rainfall-triggered eruption would not produce a harmonic tremor--a quake type that indicates an increasing internal pressure because of any magma movements from inside--while this series of pyroclastic flows were externally triggered. I hope you understand. Thanks for the covering anyway.

Hmm. Thanks for clarifying. I feel very foolish for making this mistake. I was going off of interpreting the dataset, and likely made an incorrect interpretation. I have made this mistake before when looking at USGS Mount Saint Helens data which ended up just being wind noise which disappeared when checking other seismographs (except in that case my mistake was never mentioned in a video). Also, do you by chance know what the lower end threshold for earthquake detection is on the present seismographs? Knowing the type of seismographs present helps me a bit more accurate. EDIT: Oh boy my mistake was larger than I first thought. I misinterpreted the lava-avalanche earthquakes as harmonic tremor. So when I said “increasing activity” I was simply seeing the actual small scale eruption occurring. Oops

@@GeologyHub Currently there are about a dozen active seismographs around Merapi, some of them use B-type (Broadband, up to 80 Hz, for distal tectonic quakes detection), H-type (High Broadband, up to 100 Hz), and E-type seismic bandwidth sensor (Extreme-Short Period, up to 250 Hz), but the default settings for the spectrogram mode is 0-25 Hz with intensity range from 20dB to 150 dB. All of them are a High-Gain three axial seismometer (furthermore, check the IRIS SEED Channel Naming Rule). So, avalanches wave would be appeared dominantly around the middle-range frequency (5-15 Hz).

Mount Saint Helen’s had a huge one in 1980 l’s eruption, look at the photos, lahars also formed due to almost instant flash melting of snow/ ice from the summit. I believe lahars have killed more than pyroclastic flows , but I’d avoid both 😎
