Just a quick walk around my 1999 Mercedes W220 S280. I bought this as a £460 and an 186k mile A160L that used oil and water😬. Three previous owners 3 months MoT.
Being a non sunroof car, the floor isn't rotted out, and the Airmatic works perfectly. It's got the usual rust on the arches, and it's had a couple of cosmetic repairs over the years.
Drove it around for a week before the EIS module decided to fall over. It had a completely dead battery when I brought it so I hoped all the electrical gremlins were simply from being sat with a flat battery... 😂 Turns out that the EIS had previously been replaced with a second hand one from an S500 along with an afterthought start button rather than doing it properly🤠. So even after swapping the complete ecu set from a '99 S320, it still had a Canbus fault code for the BAS/ESP ecu. Ripped out the interior to check all the Canbus wiring and connections. Turns out, the S500 had Distronic fitted and the SAMs had all been reprogrammed to work with it... hence having to fit a starter button. Found a handy independent who took about ten minutes to diagnose and reprogram the car. No more warning lights and working cruise control.
Facelift rear lights, a couple of bits of S600 interior trim and all finished off with a set of refurbished 18" 8.5J alloys from the facelift W221😎
And finally a nice sunny day to run a camera around it. 5,000 trouble free miles and the only item on a pre MoT check through was a worn outer track rod end.
I will be part exchanging it shortly, so stay tuned to see what replaces it... 🤔
