Of course GL owners alike will recognize this special button on the drivers door as the rear side windows that open outwards slightly - in the R-class days these same side vent windows came automatically with the panoramic sunroof option and I wouldn't be surprised it's still specified that way with the glass pano roof on the GL/GLS. My dogs like it open.

The thing that annoys me the most with Mercedes like this is the interior which is so outdated right now and cannot understand why they keep the design for the "hand brake" on the left side, but not with a proper button. It is so outdated. I mean, after all you must pay around 100 000 euros and u get this interior build quality. Thats a shame.

Your comment about owners letting in their branded vehicle, reminds me of this shocking intersection here in Newcastle NSW Australia which during peak times is on for very little time, which resulted in 3 light changes. I was in the left turn turning left when the lights turned red for the 3RD TIME!!!! This vehicle pulls up braking very hard with left indicator on very close to my lane obviously thinking since I had an Audi as well I would let him in. This was 2 car lengths or 10 meters from the lights. I did not let him in as he cannot expect me waiting SO long to let someone in when he just arrived-it doesn’t work this way. However if he had already been there before me then sure I would let him in even if it cost me another light change: such is life sometimes. So brand snobbery does not work with me! In other situations as long as they are not aggressive and indicate in advance of merging regardless of what brand it is I would brake and let them in no worries. Just cannot stand these aggressive types!

Surely with the abundant torque an electric motor gives this could be used when vehicle is stopped or just about stopped up to the light load level where the engine (reduced in size) takes over to do the cruising, then if extra demand is needed, say for overtaking the two rear electric motors could instantly cut in until the load is light again in which it cuts out. Of course regeneration occurs when braking to charge the electric storage. Also when the vehicle is very lightly loaded and detects a shallow or greater decline the engine would power another generator while at the same time transferring drive to the rear electric motors which are lightly loaded due to the decline, during this time the petrol or Diesel engine (most likely a better choice) would operate at optimum rpm to generate charge for the battery. If the vehicle continues and 1/ decelerates the rear motors also regenerate until stopped or accelerated the vehicle until the lightly loaded condition. Or 2/ the vehicle continues the slope using lightly loaded electric motors while the diesel generates more power in its optimum rpm. This large generator/motor can disconnect from the drivetrain via a soft smart disconnect/reconnect to eliminate drivetrain vibration, while the main generator/motor can power the front wheels to make it electric 4x4 when in rough slow terrain using its immense motor torque with the other 2 rear motors all the time sensing the current supplied to the motor to detect for lack of traction (current drops, hence waits for movement sensor to detect wheel movement in which the current is supplied to match the other rear wheel initially then both half in 1/100 ths of a second to resume normal drive. The front generator will aportion the torque to whichever front wheel has most traction via the current ABS system that is being used. Once traction is possible by 2WD front and the rpm can suit the diesels efficiency band then the rear electric motors only come on when needed for 4x4 traction, so this way it will be 2WD diesel for as much as possible with the electrics only coming on for increased torque when required from the driver/ increased speed or when on decent in which the diesel shuts off and all 3 electric motors become generators. So this system is 4x4 electric with diesel maximum 2WD front, where the front axle can be purely diesel driven or purely electric driven with any combination thereof. The reason why the diesel does not drive all 4 is purely for the smaller engine size being matched mainly for efficient front electric motor generation when the rear wheels can provide drive. However all 3 electric motors and the diesel can be engaged for maximum torque that cannot be provided by the 3 motors alone.

At 22:40 you say in traffic there could be two Smart four two's which is correct. Look at it another way though. There could be only one person in each so if you take a passenger it's the same space on the road but the GLS only needs one parking space. If you take seven people you need four Smart for two's. Cars with more seats are better for traffic but only if they use most of those seats.

@31:15 Thomas accidentally disproves the whole philosophy of downsizing engines for 'environmental' reasons. Bigger engines, in this case the V8, uses less fuel than the V6 because the bigger engine doesn't have to work as hard. And Thomas isn't the only reviewer to note this 'anomaly'. Once again, it just goes to show why gov mandates and regulations forcing manufacturers to do something usually isn't the best way forward, and that's the only reason car manufacturers are downsizing engines and putting turbos which doesn't help, objectively. How I noticed this. My ma has a Skoda Yeti with a 1.2litre engine and a turbo. On paper it has 47.5mpg because the engine is so small. Great? No In reality, because the engine is so weak, the turbo is ALWAYS working, resulting in an around town MPG of around 10. I kid you not. At the other extreme, the Ferrari 488 has no improvement over the 458, other than accelleration in the 458 due to the turbo. Other reviewers with both the 458 and 488 have noted this! Whether you believe in global warming or not is a separate issue. The measures introduced into the motoring world to supposedly solve this problem is a sham designed to make someone rich (while giving someoene in gov a nice 'little' campaign donation) with no objectively measurable improvements in fuel economy. Unbelievable! And some bureaucratic megalomaniac killjoy is taking great pleasure in eradicating all these lovely V8 (and upwards) engines! Oh well, no motoring journalist wants to talk about the truth for fear of repercussions (which should tell us all we need to know). My advice is vote with your wallet. Don't buy any of these crappy downsized engines. You'll end up paying far more for it at the pump for it anyway.
@autogefuehl
6 жыл бұрын
Well, I have noticed sometimes that the smaller engines dont make sense. As for V8 vs V6 here in this vehicle however, I noticed a WAY higher consumption for the V8 engine. As for the very small 3 cylinder, below 2 litre displacement etc. I agree, the total downsizing makes no sense. Actually, I had a lot of reviews where I was mentioning that problem!
