I'm a 70-year-old drilling company owner and am known to be the fix-it guy. Your video is the best one I could find on youtube and glad I didn't give up looking for someone to tell me what im getting into. Very well done and take care.

Mr. Hill, I enjoyed watching your video and I plan on installing a new timing chain and guide on my W126. Your video is very helpful! 🙂

If you have the time to do it, somewhere under cover, and good lighting, then there is nothing to fear.

Hello Martin, do you know if you can replace timing chain/guides in a 380SL in the same/similar manner, ie the engine is not removed from the car? thanks.

Why is the chain adjustable length?

I don't remember, but when doing a job which involves turning the engine over carefully by hand I would have done.

At 1:31, you can see the Spark Plugs at the top of the image on top of the battery and brake fluid reservoir.

Question.. the guide next to cylinder 1, has an aluminium cap with 6mm Allen head. When removing this the timing guide pin looks like a large 8mm diameter cotter pin / sleeve.. HOW do you remove this pin?
@martinhill5770
3 жыл бұрын
From memory there were pins which were removed by using a threaded bar to screw in to them and then a socket on the rear and use a nut to pull the spacer out. Check to see if they are threaded.

@@martinhill5770 thanks, in my case everything is original and the timing chain job is well and truly after 236,000 miles long overdue, yet it doesn't look too bad. The sleeve bore holding the tension guide is smooth so I'll require an eight 8 - ten 10 mm easy-out tool, it's not coming out easily. Some dude on a benz forum said he used a magnet! If only I lived in that world! I don't want to ruin the sleeve, but I think I'll have to be gentle.... somehow.

Hello Martin, this is one of the best video tutorials on the subject. My compliments. I would like to know how long the repair took and if you changed all 4 timing chain guides? I have a Mercedes 420 SL (01/87) with 38000 km. Do you think that it needs a change of the timing chain guides? Thank you very much for your answer cheers Walter

Thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately I don't keep track of time when working on cars. I just do a little bit each day until it is done.

I would change the guides. As I understand it wear is about age not miles. It isn't hard, just take your time.

@@martinhill5770 Hi martin great video, im just getting into a 78' 450SEL and im wondering if i should change the entire chain or just the guides since they are more prone to failure. If the chain doesnt slap or really twist upon inspection is it safe to change just the guides? cheers

@@quincylongman7469 At the very least you could check the chain for stretch, but since you are in there anyway my preference would be to just do it.

the video does not indicate removing the cam sprockets when replacing the guide rails and guide rail. Can you confirm that there is no need to remove the sprockets? is there enough room to pull out the guide rails and tensioner guide with the sprockets still in place?

I am sure I did take the sprockets off, as I remember retorquing the sprocket bolt.

@@martinhill5770 I'm up the road in Loughborough with a 500 M117.963 SEC. I'm just about to carry out timing replacement using a Febi kit. I'll check the tension shoe against the original in the hope it looks as good but I'm not holding my breath. Unfortunately I already lost an exhaust cam and lifter on cylinder 3 from a choked oiler. I'll never use engine flush again. I have a hunting rifle cleaning kit at home, I used this to clean the oiler tubes. You'll not believe the fines I discovered on my cleaning swabs - 5 passes till clean! I'm checking the oil pick up strainer too and pressed a perm magnet to the sump near the drain plug !

From what I read, the lower guides don't wear as much, and to change them is massively more involved. If the engine was out I would do them.
