Joe Pesci presenting Mercedes Ruehl with the Oscar® for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "The Fisher King" at the 64th Academy Awards® in 1992.
Hollywood simply does not know what to do with distinctive, daring women like Mercedes Ruehl. She couldn't "capitalize" on this Oscar in any traditional way, but she's been busy on television and what is doubtless her first love--the stage. And you can never take this award away from her.

The Fisher King was really something ...yet most people never saw it. im not a movie lover, but a friend put the dvd in front of me one night, and i was mesmerized. Jeff bridges, Robin williams , both were remarkable. But Mercedes' performance was simply breathtaking. She is the heart of the film.

I was working at a movie theatre when it came out. I first saw a teaser trailer for it, and thought, "I HAVE TO SEE THIS ONE." As fate would have it, we got a print of it for, I think, the last test screening or something. Anyhoo, the projectionist tells me that we've got it for a screening that evening, but he's got to run the print that morning (to make sure it's put together properly). Well, he called me the next morning, and I came down and got to watch THE FISHER KING.......and I LOVED IT!!!

She deserved this Oscar. She did a wonderful job. Everyone in the movie was wonderful. I've been reviewing clips of the movie over these last few days, enjoying her performance and her delivery of so many of her lines, for example, when Jack returns because he's finally come to his senses, she tells him his clothes and belongings got burned "accidentally." Great performance.

Mercedes Ruehl is a fine actress in both senses of the word. I first saw her in Big, then later in Frasier, and afterward I could recognize her anywhere by her sweet, sexy voice alone. She’s always been a talented actress, she deserved that Oscar, and now, almost 30 years later, I still love her and wish her continued success in both career and life.

Deserved it for her amazingly committed, completely natural performance. She wasn't relying on little tics or moves or anything, she was just playing a real person. More actors, especially Oscar-nominated ones, need to follow that lead.

The dinner date scene was stinkin' amazing!

Such a well deserved honor. Everybody in The Fisher King was memorable but none more so than Mercedes Ruehl as Jeff Bridges' angry girlfriend. It would have been nice to see Terry Gilliam's underrated gem further rewarded but this was great compensation. And her acceptance spoke for so many other actors. Beautifully done.

If being pop meant so much and keep getting media then Britney Spears would be considered a good singer. Didnt see Mercedes performance but just know both Jessica and Juliette really did a good job. Fried green tomatoes should have get more nominations by the way. And to the idiot who said Whoopi's oscar was silly, dude, WAKE UP.
