Jesus that new starter motor sounds a lot better than mine, that's what 140k miles of start/stop does to your starter I guess. I've only recently just unplugged the negative battery sensor and that's pretty much disabled ECO, so for everyone else with a 651 that wants to preserve their timing gear and chains, do this too 👍

You can do it without removing the vacuum cell or splitting the cat/dpf, just unscrew the oxygen sensor & remove the lower steering coupling then remove the complete unit from below. Can’t tell you how many cat/dpf leaks I have to deal with from the two being split then incorrectly aligned & dpf pressure sensor pipes twisted.

Is this engine the same as in the W203 C220 cdi with the 5 speed auto? Because those seem bulletproof. Also, what would cause the interior lights to dim when accelerating in a car with the OM642 V6 diesel?
@mercmantips
4 жыл бұрын
No it is a different engine. The w203 c220 cdis are the old straight 4 cylinder diesel engine and yes they are bulletproof compared to the om651, the dimming lights i have never come across
@SDav21

@@mercmantips Okay. Thank you for the response. My dad has a 2004 C220 Cdi facelift with 292,000 kms. It is a noisy engine and in my country the dpf was removed for local sale so smells quite diesel like. But it settles down nicely when cruising and is bulletproof. Strange on the OM651 that the ecu must be taken out when taking off the air box. On my OM642 engine E Class I was thinking maybe voltage regulator or alternator causing the issue.

Do you have any idea how long the original starters from Denso in 651 engine (made in Japan) usually last? I know there are multiple Toyota/Lexus models out there that have OEM Denso starters and they usually last for 150-200K miles. Thanks!
@hectorpascale1013
2 жыл бұрын
The Starter of my OM651 in a S212 is still ok @ 680.000km = 422.500 Miles. But Start/Stop mostly deactivated. I don´t know if it is a DENSO, it is in there since fabrication. The one he changed was BOSCH. Generator lasts only 250.000km = 155.00 miles, then the brushes are worn out, and the commutator as well. Brushes/regulator can´t be changed anyway as far as i remember, at least not so easy as on a S210.

Yes on E class and C class we have changed loads, but never on a vito yet there is not much room at the back but could be done if the wiper mechanism and scuttle panel is removed..

@@mercmantips You're right its tricky access ! I've heard the engine needs removing but that adds massively to the cost.

I think you will have enough room to do the timing chain on a Vito if you remove the scuttle panel, i have never tried but i will give it a go if i get one come into my workshop, if the guides are broken (sometimes they do if you leave it too long) then the engine definitely needs to come out even on a E or C class..
