Great Video. I watched this a couple of times and then changed my own spark plug wires and plugs. Actually I did it twice since I was missing an extension long enough for the plug extraction. So I put it all back together again and went to the autoparts store for the extension and then started over again. Everything worked just as you showed in the video and it gave me confidence to try this myself. Dealer was $600, my mechanic wanted $400 and I did it myself for $125 in parts. Got the non-resistor F8DC4 plugs from the dealer for $5.00 each. Thank you.

My C230 has 250k miles on it, so I guess it's time for new plugs. This is an excellent presentation on how to change these plugs correctly, using the correct plugs for the job, describing the tools that I'll need, and the part about over torquing prevention was right on. I learned a good deal from this. I too had made the mistake of putting platinum plugs in a car that didn't like them. The bottom dropped out of my fuel mileage just as you described. I had not figured out the resistance issue, just put old plugs back in and it was happy again.

But, this one has been in the family for 370K miles, so, don't want to see it go bad. And, owning one, you already know, having this done at a shop 'ain't cheap'. Thanks, again.

I wanted to do this but wasn't sure, I have no check engine light or any thing, but some times my accelerator feels so heavy to start from an stop sign that I think I am running on 2 cylinders. no knocking, no shaking, I am suspecting the MAF or oxygen sensors or spark plugs.if you have an idea let me know, well at least now I know how to change my spark plugs. if I do drive with a few full throttler its the same situation, but if I drive all the times like a grand ma my accelerator isverysharp

So, I have a newer M111 version Kompressor motor running an overdrive pulley on a 2002 US C Coupe. Over the years I've tried different cooler plugs, and the IX iridium just suck.Eat coil packs and only last 30K miles. Recently I went to copper and they work great. But overall my mileage while typical for this vehicle, stinks! I noticed the plugs you're using aren't even available in the US. Where are you from? So, used the NGK charts, I found NGK5030 BCP7ES. Any reason I shouldn't try these?

So, I went ahead and ordered the plugs....but then afterwards was reading about how the reason they use resistor plugs is to prevent the noise that will come from the plugs from messing with the electronic systems. I see your car still uses a carburetor. Now, I'm wondering if I should even try it. Here's the coil pack used on the 2002. It sits right on the cylinder head. Requires External Resistor it says.

fupabox oh I'm definitely going to attempt it. I actually just got back in from being outside for a couple of hours changing my air filter. While I was out there, I decided to inspect under the entire engine - a real thorough inspection and I discovered a set of wires that had been frayed due to them being rubbed on one of the pulleys and belts. I moved that out of the way and put some electrical tape over it, and also noticed that the sensor for the air box was unplugged, combined with the new filter, taping up those wires and plugging in that sensor, all of a sudden I'm feeling my supercharger for the first time! ( bought the car 3 weeks ago)

Just a heads up, I have a 1997 C-280, I changed the plugs because it was wanting to stall at stops and lights, changed them out and still had the same problem. I got to looking at the coil packs and noticed one of the brass tits on the corner of one of the coil packs was kind of pressed in, smashed in some what, buy hardly noticeable unless you looked really close at it and it looked different from the others. I knew it was that one because my diag. test kept telling me which plug it was but they were new plugs and boots and that was the coil that had the crimped looking brass tit. So I bought a new coil, (actually all 3 since it was cheaper per coil in the end, like $28 per but got all 3 for around $70) and sure enough it has been running smooth ever since. So if you have this problem and have changed the plugs check out the brass tits on the coil packs, most likely that will be the problem. Something to keep in mind because it drove me crazy trying to figure out why it was running like that and getting in and out 3 or 4 times, it is not that hard of a job, just removing the air breather and cover. Another problem are the rubber boots, they should be replaced too, I had one that broke on my third try and replaced those too...

it could very well be plugs or coil..coil is less likely since it idles fine and a bad coil would signal a misfire and an engine code..could also be the MAF sensor going bad. or a carbonned up egr valve.I would check the plugs first

Well, u tube doesn't seem to like it when you link to something. But for my car, there are no plug wires. There is a separate coil for EACH plug, sits right on top of the plug, bolts into the head. The recommended plugs are high priced Iridium Resistors $60 for 4 but I run cooler plugs due to being overboosted, and based on some folks in the SLK 230K forums, decided to try copper. They seem to be running well, and well, I can't afford the problems it might cause, so not going to do it.

Damn, I can''t seem to post the link to the coil pack. Just look up 2002 C230 2.3L on rockauto. Typically irregardless of the brand you order, they're all made by Beru. When they get hot over time, the internals of the things on top, just give out, and they arc, you can see where the arc is on the plastic.

***** Alright cool. What would you recommend doing to the car before I embark on this journey? As far as maintenance or modification goes. I will be hopefully changing the interior to black, I want to put in a rear window sunshade, all window curtains, and I want to replace the dome lights and dashlights to red led's. I have been searching and searching and I cannot find any "pre-made" leds for the dash. Any help on any of these would be much appreciated. Also I notice there is considerable amount of motion in the accelerator pedal before it actually goes. I looked under the hood and I found the butterfly hinge for the throttle cable. I noticed the cable isn't tot, its fairly loose. I think by tightening this it would help with the throttle response but I could be wrong. So I looked into tightening it and I can't seem to figure out how. If you still have the car could you make a quick video on it? Thanks, it would be much appreciated. And also thanks for the help you have given me already.
@fupabox

Black Viper I would do filters, coolant change,brake fluid,power steering fluid... all cheap and quick to do..basically all the little maint, jobs just to ensure no hassles....I would grab a tire plug kit as well...the highway up to Alaska is gravel in many parts from what I've heard, and any videos I have seen of people making the trip, they have had multiple flat tires....as fro premade LEDs there are a few on ebay www.ebay.ca/itm/10x-Fits-Mercedes-Mixed-4SMD-LED-Socket-Wedge-Instrument-Dashboard-Panel-Light-N-/281460610110?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item41885c143e&vxp=mtr the cable should have a bit of slack in it..it isn't directly hooked to the engine..it goes to the electronic potentiometer which converts the signal and sends it to the throttle body on the intake..Mercedes have always had a pretty long pedal travel to ensure very smooth acceleration and shifting when driving normally, so the only real option is stomp on it to accelerate quickly...My 500SL lopes around at under 1200 rpms most of the time,so to have any fun I leave it in 2nd gear when driving around town :)

+Johny KenT It sounds like the fuel pressure is leaking down when the car is stopped..try leaving the key in the second position (the one when all the lights on the dash come on ) and wait 5 seconds before starting..if it runs fine now, the pressure regulator could be going bad..fuel filter could be clogged, or a vacuum line in the engine compartment is leaking...the other possibilities are MAF sensor dirty or going bad
