86? Been trying to find out what year mine is. The serial number are unreadable. Everything the same as yours. Red strip. What others have said is Red is 72 and older and Blue is up to 86. Would you know anything about that?

Use the serial number off of the freeze plug on the side of the power head. It's the round silver thing about the size of a nickel. The number on that always matches the serial number of the motor.Go to MarineEngine.com. It will tell you what year it is.Hope this helps...Blue stripes are from the 70's.Brown stripes are 80's. Red stripes started around 86

I just acquired the same engine, which isn't running due to carb issues. I see the lower unit drain plug, but the upper screw isn't there. Is that upper screw hole for water drainage, or am I missing the upper overflow screw? I'll drain the lower unit fluid today, and hopefully won't see that it's filled with water!

You add foot lube at the bottom screw until it starts flowing out of the top screw. That's how you know you have enough fluid in the foot. And yes there is supposed to be a top screw there so that water won't leak back in and contaminate your fluid.

@@bassmaster3474 Yes, I figured it out. Somehow the previous owner took the top overflow screw out and never replaced it. I hope the only water that got in was when I tested it in a tank. I drained the water, and filled it with Quicksilver lower unit lube and took it out for a test run and all is good. A great little engine, with a super smooth idle!

just recently purchased the same motor (9.9, but an 86). have you ever had an issue with poor idling? takes for ever to get it to turn over, but wont idle unless the choke is on. thought maybe you could help! just pulled the Carb, gonna take it apart unless it may be another issue

Yes Sir, Had the same problem. Usually on these Mercurys the primer diaphragm on the right side of the carb is bad I can't say for sure that's what your problem is but that is one of the man issues normally.

@@bassmaster3474 gotcha, did your carb come with the yellow/opaque gasket on the fuel pump side? Mine does not have it and I've heard sometimes that's an issue
