To give Meridian some credit, they were never, ever afraid to recognise the past of ITV in the south, and seemed to embrace any opportunity to showcase Southern or TVS. Having such a strong and well-loved anchor in Fred must have helped

Sadly that's all they had to fall back on. They created nothing of any noteworthiness themselves. The full stretch, wizzardora and something with Michael Palin. Then it's all a blur. A sad end to a strong regional service.

Sad fact, when air pressure was very high I could receive Meridian in Grantham, south lincs!

Indeed. I remember being able to view Anglia broadcasts from NE Hampshire, as well as some from the Netherlands. To make it slightly more sad, I was enthralled to be able to watch a much later episode of Prisoner Cell Block H on the very rare high pressure Anglia broadcast.

Does anyone know what the music is called that is used in the opening titles. It was also used in their pre launch promotions and Spirit of the South ads. Can't seem to find it or a clean version - if one exists.

2:27 The narration states that Meridian won its license in November 1991. It was actually _October 16th,_ 1991. I'm sorry, but I *_had_* to type this.

I may be wrong but I believe Meridian's licence was confirmed in November 1991 after TVS confirmed it would not challenge the decision.

@@MatgoStyles Hmm... I never thought of that. It probably took a while for them to ponder their fate.

They just didn't have the same ambition as either Southern or TVS, did they?

A quite indulgent way to fill an hour of air time by congratulating themselves on their productions. In the early years Meridian had some innovative community-focused slots such as Three Minutes and FreeScreen, but the regional dimension gradually declined to what it is now; a local news service not broadcast from a local studio if you happen to be in the South East or Thames Valley! Interesting to hear an alternative Meridian Tonight theme at 42:59 compared to the usual version at 44:07. Thank you Mr Dineage - the consummate presenter for the South who uniquely transcended Southern, TVS and Meridian.

Good spot on that alternate Meridian Tonight theme! But did they really have to change it just to make it clear that this wasn't really Meridian Tonight?

Surely Fred was mistaken, Southern Broadcast until 31sr December 1981, TVS took over in 1982, not 1980.

Correct. I've seen the video an insane number of times. And Meridian won its license to broadcast on October 16th, 1991.

They won Southern's licence in 1980, and began broadcasting on New Year's Day 1982.
