Passengers aboard our catamaran, Manute’a, were thrilled to experience a moment of awe when the coastal waters off Dana Point burst into bounding joy as thousands of common dolphins enthusiastically leaped from the waters below.
Known as a dolphin stampede, these lucky onlookers got the experience of a lifetime. Those onboard were awestruck to be in the middle of such a huge number of wild and free-roaming dolphins as the marine mammals traveled beside, beneath, and in front of them. Dolphins love to ride the pressure waves created by boats and often seek out the experience.
It's unknown for certain what causes dolphins to exhibit this stampeding behavior, and these dolphin stampedes happen spontaneously. Leading theories suggest the dolphins may be meeting up with another pod nearby, racing to catch prey, or evading natural predators such as orcas.
Southern California has the greatest density of dolphins per square mile of anywhere on earth. This includes nearly 450,000 common dolphins as well as several other types of dolphins. Dana Point is one of the best places in the world to see mega-pods that can number in herds of up to 10,000 animals just a few miles from shore.
Common dolphins average about six feet in length and weigh about 170 pounds. Their diet consists of schooling fish and squid. They are agile swimmers and can achieve short bursts of speed of up to about 45 knots. Found in most oceans around the world, these animals have been depicted in art as far back as Greek antiquity.
With a variety of year-round whales, more dolphins per square mile than anywhere in the world, pristine coastline, calm seas, the first and longest-running annual Festival of Whales, and a captivating harbor minutes from the open ocean, Dana Point, California, is the Dolphin and Whale Watching Capital of the World®. Dana Point is also the first Whale Heritage Site in the Americas certified by the World Cetacean Alliance.
