You will never see that bottle again... I guarantee it. A couple of reasons. First: That drop... ouch. I know you put neoprene in there, but that was a *long* drop. Second: did you actually test the solar panel power capture ability? Your black tape will severely compromise the performance (look up partial shading). Third: What happens when the bottle flips over? Honestly, a better idea would have been to use something like a Spot emergency beacon, which uses satellites to communicate. More expensive, but at least you don't need to be in sight of shore to have it work.
@63ch31

The solar light voltage step-up cirquit will only (I think) be powered at night. When it gets dark, it should have been charging throughout the day, giving it sufficient power to send at least one position update. Apart from that I strongly agree on the partial shading argument, as that impacts the power delivery to such an extent that the one in question probably delivers only 10% of rated current. Not to mention the center-split glass bottle being thrown from 20 metres. Oof.

Riccardo Bassini GPS is as passive system. The device itself can figure out where it is by the position of the satellites it can see. The device cannot send anything up to the satellites. It needs another network connection for that like cellular, wifi, satellite messenger, or Marine AIS to name a few. He is going to need a bigger bottle and If thermal management turns out to be an issue, he could do a radiator type system by drilling holes and passing bolts through the bottom of the bottle, this will also help it stay upright too.

I believe the GSM system runs off of a 4G or 5G network.... These networks use cellphone towers. Cellphone towers only transmit about 1.500 feet out to sea. The device would need to wash up where towers are located, and have international call and text credits. The GPS signal and location can't be transmitted without a 5G connection. These days GPS and GSM are micro compared to this example. Huawei the Chinese company have developed towers that can transmit 100km out to sea.
