The thing I love most about players like Busquets and Messi is how they elevate the players around them. For the longest time, Busquets was the overlooked member of the Barcelona midfield because Xavi and Iniesta were a lot flashier. Messi on the other hand always looks after the other goalscorers and often let’s them take penalties to boost their confidence when they are in a drought. We saw this with martinez vs Charlotte, but he has done the same for Suarez, NeymR and even Mbape in the past. That is what differentiates him from other GOAT candidates like Maradona, Pele and CR7

3:47 that quote really sums up what makes Messi in the MLS different from other players who went over to the US. Look back at David Beckhams stint at LA Galaxy, yes he was also a great player who was superior to his competition, but IMO he made the MLS feel like a retirement home, a league that he went to because he was past his prime, a way for him to wind down his career and eventually set up his own MLS franchise. On the other hand Messis mentality has been nothing but determination to keep playing, and it shows in his performance. Messi isn’t using the MLS to retire, he’s using it as the opposite: so he can keep playing and keep winning.

Times have changed though - the quality of "homegrown" MLS players, or the youngsters from both within and without the league is MUCH better. To the extent that old has-beens are getting found out pretty quickly if they treat this league as a free ride to retirement. Alot of them have pissed off to Saudi Arabia for stupefying levels of cash - never to be seen again on a competitive football field again by most people. Because NOBODY is going to watch that Saudi crap. These players have sold their souls, and disappeared themselves. Lionel was offered that satanic deal - and chose MLS instead for much less money. I still remember when Real Madrid star Raul Gonzales Blanko played at Schalke 04 for two years towards the end of his career, 2010-2012. He worked hard, led by exampel and shot some heartbreakingly beautiful goals. He galvanized his teammates, with Klaas Jan Huntelaar becoming the top scorer of the 2011-2012 Bundesliga season. Its may be an indication of greatness, but no more than that and only offensive players even have a chance to win it. Most consider that competition even harder than the World Cup, because there are almost no easy opponents in Europe. So saying he never won anything of significance outside his clubs is not really promoting your football expertise. He's definitely not the best there ever was, since he wasn't even the best of his time. But he's TOP 10 of all times at least! People tend to forget his number also skyrocketed and got higher season after season, he broke many records as well. Cristiano Ronaldo became the 1st player to ever score in 3 Champions League finals. One thing that I reckon might be food for thought - besides the commercial deals- a few of the reasons why he decided on MLS over the Saudi league was because of the relative security and lifestyle that the US provides, proximity to Argentina, comparative anonymity and potential to leave a real legacy in a league currently undergoing organic puberty and teenage-hood, rather than an infant Saudi league with 5000 fans in stadiums a game (optimistically), artificially force-fed and inflated to grow sideways, but not upwards. P.s. Messi's commercial team deserves an award

Also a truly world class player has excellent decision making, they know when the try fancy skills and when to keep it simple. Quite often the most simple/ basic football is the most effective, they make the game look easy. This is where Messi. Busquets and Alba excel, their bodies might be slowing down but their speed of thought makes up for it, so they are 2 steps ahead of the opposition.

PSG was just not a good fit, plus the way the transition happened was bad, he wasn't ready. But he still performed well if you check his stats there. So don't let the PSG stint taint your view of how fans in Europe perceived Messi, and that’s coming from a non-European fan 😂. The MLS move is great for US soccer pre World Cup. And Messi was ready for it. That’s why he seems happy. It's a pity that the move has affected ticket pricing, which doesn't happen elsewhere in the world because football is a working class, every day man's sport, whereas in the US it's an elite sport.

Barça is pronounced Barsa, not Barca. It's a "C trencada" in Catalan or "C cedilla" in Spanish. In Spanish was used in medieval times, nowadays it's not in the alphabet anymore. In Catalan it's still used.

4:00 you don't get as good as Messi or Ibra or CR7, without the constant drive to win, no matter what age are you, no matter where are you playing, no matter what sport are you playing. You can say that CR/ had to work harder to achieve what he did, while Messi had to just express his natural talent, and i do agree with that statement, but, to be one of, if not the, greateast at something, you just cannot do it with talent alone, you atleast need the drive to compete and win, and Messi always had plenty throughout all of his carreer.

Messi is respected in Europe and loved at Barca but not at PSG they bood him multiple times so he wasn't happy there. Psg attacked Messi for getting eliminated in UCL and then Messi with Argentina beat France.

It’s nice to see him having fun again. I’m glad Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe are all able to get out of the shithole called PSG.

He was unhappy at PSG because the hardcore France and PSG Ultras hated and bashed him every single game after he won against France and before the WC he wasn't the leader of the team and some PSG players hated that he walks the pitch too much "Hey Messi walk over here".

Another great video. On midfielders you should watch Kevin De Bruyne for a great example of scanning and passing in the current EPL and Steven Gerrard who (in my opinion) is the greatest midfielder in the Premier League era (but I am a Liverpool fan). Iniesta and Xavi at Barça too were phenomenal.

I placed a big bet on Miami when Cruz Azul equalized... I lost all hope when I saw the added time being just 2 minutes... and then the free-kick happened, you can imagine my joy when the ball went in haha

Really enjoyed your chat about first touches, 'soft feet' and 'soft hands' ! Obviously Messi has one of the best first touches ever, but for me the best first touch ever has to be the Iceman, the non-flying Dutchman, Dennis 'the Menace' Bergkamp. Do yourself a favour and watch some highlights, even if it's not for your channel!

Leo is having fun again. That’s the whole enchilada for his play right now for Miami! I watched some of his games for PSG and the fans were so awful to him, I don’t blame him for running off from that environment. Who would want to stay there when Paris ultras were turning against him, like it was his fault they didn’t win the Champions’ League.

Hey Luke, there’s something I would like you to do that I think would be quite interesting. Maybe it would take you too much time to do for you, but I would appreciate if you could create a playlist with all the videos that you consider as ”learning” for you in football. To follow your journey into understanding this sport would be really interesting to me but I just discovered your channel recently :/

Loved the video, just one comment. I disagree with the statement that Messi is not really loved in Europe. He is idolized all over Europe. Just in Spain in the last year most of the newborn babies got the name Leo after Messi. When he was with PSG in Munich for the Championship League. There thousands of fans were chanting his name, at their rival’s city. In Asia they go crazy for him. Even in England fans were asked if they were loved to see Messi at the Premier League and they said yes, absolutely. What happened with PSG fans doesnt represent Europe and they were hurt because Messi with Argentina defeat France at the final.
