Small detail that I wished was metioned in the video: Gonzalo Montiel was the defender that handballed, accidentaly awarding France their second penalty and putting the match 3-3. Him being the one to take the final, world-cup winning penalty is like the ultimate redemption.

Argentinian here. The spiciness of the Argies in the match vs Netherlands was in response to many declarations that the Dutch players and coach made to the press in the days leading up to the game, for instance, Van Gaal said that Messi counts as one less player when Argentina doesn't have the ball, that Messi is a has-been, the Dutch GK said he could stop Messi in PKs, and some of the other Dutch players were turning up the heat with comments like that. Also, Van Gaal has always been very vocal about how much he dislikes South American style of play in general, and how much he dislikes South American players in particular, as he demonstrated while being a coach to Argentinian players like Di María or Riquelme. In fact, Messi's celebration taking his hands to his ears (the 'Topo Gigio') is a celebration borrowed from Riquelme, and openly intended to spite and infuriate Van Gaal. The referee in the match was an idiot as well, and quickly lost control of the situation. During the penalty shootout the Dutch players were trying to distract and psych the Argentine players with all manner of mocking, yelling, and even threats, which explains the reaction Argentinian players had when Lautaro Martinez scored the winning PK. Add all of this to the fact that Argentina and Netherlands have had some pretty intense WC matches in decades prior, and you get a pretty explosive cocktail.

Dutchy here. I agree with what happened on the field, but don't agree with the analysis of van Gaals words. Van Gaal never said Messi is a has-been. He praised Messi for being an amazing player, who can create chances out of seemingly nothing. He did say that Messi doesn't contribute that much if they don't have possession and that that might be part of the plan he'd like to execute against Argentina (might be disrespectful, but I think we can all agree Messi doesn't press that much compared to other players). Next to this the Dutch GK said he could stop Messi's PK. Is this disrespectful? Shouldn't a goalkeeper be confident in his abilities to stop PKs? Would have been a lot weirder if he said "If Messi takes a PK he will score, there would be nothing I could do". Van Gaal was a bit too proud in claiming he trained the players on penalties, and talked too much about this in the press conferences for sure. But he only said he thought they would have the edge when it comes to penalties. I don't see disrespect in this. The dislike of Van Gaal to South American players is something I don't know much about. However, Di Maria said that after a good game, Van Gaal would showcase points of weaknesses in his game, which to me seems like a coach who above all wants improvement in the team. Next to this Riquelme says he has no problems with Van Gaal. Now I don't know the ins and outs, but these two cases don't really show me he hates South American players. All in all I think Louis van Gaal talks too much, but didn't mean any disrespect. I feel like some media took his words out of context and ignited the fire, which he could have prevented by just keeping his mouth shut. He should have known better after his many years in this sport. On the pitch both sides showed some nasty behavior and I do agree that during the PK shootout the Dutch side was disgusting. Lastly, even though the match had cases of unsportsmanship conduct, I think it was one of the best matches during this worldcup to watch. Congrats with the worldcup, no hard feelings, and I hope you enjoyed the party!

The Netherlands vs Argentina was so messy because the prior week a lot of dutch players and the coach were belittling Argentina, whereas Argentina decided not to comment prior to the game, and trying to get into Argentinian egos is probably the worst thing you could do. The competitive level in sports has also increased due to more participants, and a much higher level of training and tactics. Messi’s era is finally ending, having left a mark on football that would be remembered for generations. He has won everything and anything that is available for him, the World Cup just confirmed his GOAT status

Thanks. Thanks so much for this video, man. I saw Messi's whole career and had to bear that in my own country they called him a "spaniard" and "a failure". I wanted him to be world champion just for one thing and one thing only: shut the whole fucking argentinian sports media up. And he did. Long live the GOAT. Long live Messi. And from the bottom of my heart and my mum's memory (she passed away on July 31st, 2022)... thanks from the bottom of my heart!

8:36 the DBS music hits hard In regards to the Dutch-Argentina match: the NDL players were bullying and intimidating every single player from the other team, every freaking time, that they went to the penalty spot. So it was a two way street.

It's been a month but I still pinch myself from time to time to see that Messi and Argentina really had won the World Cup. I had been waiting for this moment for 16 years, since Messi debuted at his World Cup. God it was so surreal.

Once again you absolutely killed this video. Such a great recap. Killer jokes as always. That ending had me all choked up again and you broke me out of it with the Emi Martinez joke. Keep up the great work.

As a Latvian i was rooting for Argentina and Messi. Finals made my heart beat too much and i thought i will have a heart attack ,especially after Martinez last save . Also why america does not get pass calling it soccer? Because they call handball as football 😂

There's actually another sport called handball in the US which is different from football, so calling them both handball would be confusing

This video doesn't have enough views. Amazing work, great editing, and of course, I cried again while watching the last 10 minutes of the video because I'm argentinian. The way you told everything was great, but the way you described Messi's goal at 44:15 was a work of art. Lautaro unfortunately needs to improve his game if he wants to be in the team. Great vid!

Argentina vs the Netherlands was spicy not because both countries hate each other, but because Van Gaal, the netherlands' coach, famously disliked Riquelme, an Argentinian football icon, and allegedly did everything in his power to have him not play when he managed him, since he was bought at the request of the club and not Van Gaal himself.

Honestly, Martinez’s save gave me 2010 flashbacks (im a Netherlands fan) Even though Argentina beat my favourite team, Messi really deserves this, no doubt about it.

Roy Keane calling Brazil disrespectful is the best joke a pundit have ever said during the WC tournament, he as a player, didn't just disrespect his opponents he did it to his own teammates, his countrymen, etc.

One great detail almost no foreign people know: among the nastiest neighbourhoods here in Argentina, people compete on penalty shootouts alone, with very big bets and expectators crowding right by the goal, leaving almost only the space between the taker and the goal free. Stakes are incredibly high, as people do make actual living out of it. Brawls and shootings arent unusual. Gonzalo Montiel used to compete on these tourbaments as a child. He has iron nerves for penalties. He hasnt missed a signle one in his whole cerreer. There was no better pick for this special moment. He was our wildcard.
