Another excellent video again, as others have said I'm astonished how clean the oil burns, no blue smoke etc. One question, you turn off the burner whilst lowering in the crucible and then restart, is this a safety thing or because of the heat in close proximity to your hands? Also noted your using ally wheels which is what I have in mind to use - good alloy. Thanks again - matt UK one other thing have you tried lost wax and do you have any intentions of having a go?

Pony Power I actually turn the burner off before all the metal is melted or the temperature rises above what I like to pour at, 640 -650 deg Centigrade. I have not tried lost wax although I do have the materials to do this. I only use wheels now as it is a good metal.

I wonder what is the chemistry involved in the sodium carbonate degassing and the resulting dross and also the Al drossing flux. How does that work? Using waste motor oil, I'd be concerned about heavy metal fumes and other things in the furnace exhaust. "qué será, será", I guess.

@myfordboy

Adam R I don't think so. I only have to switch on the heater for 5 minutes before firing up. The tank of oil is then hot enough for the whole casting session.
@stevecummins324
9 жыл бұрын
Adam R salvage the boiling tube from a coffee machine that's getting thrown away? Designed for heating water up, but will heat oil. Also They've got a thermoswitch mounted in series with the heating element so will modulate their mains power draw as neccessary.
@brothyr
9 жыл бұрын
steve cummins Might be too hot. They're designed to quickly boil water into a steam so it goes up the tube and out the spout. It seems like a good idea but heating up the whole batch seems easier.
@stevecummins324
9 жыл бұрын
One I salvaged seems to be about 1kW power. Boiling happens at 100 deg. Thermoswitch on aluminium thermal mass block gets heated to say150 and power clicks off, as block doesn't need be any hotter. veg oil should be good to 180. Crankcase oil-400?
@myfordboy
9 жыл бұрын
steve cummins This is more complicated than what I am using. I tried adding a thermostat to my set up but it's not worth the effort. the heater only needs to be on for 5 min. and then can be switched off and forgotten.

Migueldeservantes yes, I have seen lots of videos. I was actually thinking about building one at one time. To see ones that work try searching "centrifuge" and "biodiesel". They use them to clarify used veg. oil. Although these do seem a bit "overkill" for this project.

myfordboy Followup question to this. The oil + air mixture that gets sprayed in does not provide enough oxygen? Is that why the additional blower is needed?
@myfordboy

J DeWitt Yes that's correct, because the flame is in an enclosed space air needs to be blown in for combustion.
@wjackstl

considering the oil nozzle you are using (actually all oil nozzles) is spec to run at 100psi, even up to 150psi, and you said you are running at 15psi, if I recall correctly, couldn't you just bump up the (compressed) air pressure?

Nice furnace how much faster does it go with oil as compared to only gas?
@myfordboy
9 жыл бұрын
marcibb After my 20 minute warm up time, which could be shortened if the burner was turned up, it takes 10 minutes to melt a full A10 crucible. I have to turn the burner off before all the metal is melted or it gets too hot. About half the time taken with propane.
@marcibb3167
9 жыл бұрын
myfordboy wow 50% faster, that is amazing. Have you tried this using synthetic oil versus regular oil?
@myfordboy
9 жыл бұрын
marcibb The oil I am using is from a motor repair garage so will be a mix of synthetic and regular in unknown quantities. I think any oil would work, this type of burner will also run on auto transmission oil , veg oil, kerosene etc.
