Great find. Not sure I could do diving, I'd always be looking over my shoulder or peering into the dark recesses just waiting for that shark to appear... love sharks but hate them with a passion. Mate of mine did some dives in Sydney harbor near the old quarantine station. He's found heaps of items from the early 1800's as alot of ships threw items overboard if they had sickness on board....eg sliver cultery, cups etc.

The size and location of the spots on the gold coin suggest the remains of solder from the attachment of a pin. If so, difficult to remove without leaving a stain. If it is tar, you just dissolve it with spirit or acetone.

Love your videos and have a question; I see guys fanning targets while diving and wonder if you’ve ever used a shorty basket that Jimmy Sierra used to sell? It seems it would move a lot more material faster? I know you are a professional so there must be a good reason, thanks
@DetectorComparisons
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. I have tried all different ways to dig and fanning seems to be the most efficient. I've tried different tools but the problem is you have no leverage underwater. If I were to use something to scoop rocks and sand I would just end up moving myself through the water. Even when I'm fanning, I have my fins and knees anchored in as much as possible but I still sometimes end up moving around and having to relocate to find the hole. I hope this clears it up a little.

Hi Carter..... I'm a friend of Don M, from your club. I was hoping i could ask you some questions about waterproofing the 3030. Meaning the battery compartment and usb port. I was going to start Florida beach water hunting and dont want to mess up my 3030. Ive got the new o-rings from KellyCo and new GG headsets. So just wanted to ask what you have done to seal up the 3030 to be water tight. Thanks, Scott.
@DetectorComparisons
8 жыл бұрын
Scott, I use GE silicone II to seal the battery compartment. I put it directly on the O ring. The only draw back is every time you have to charge the battery, it gets messy and time consuming peeling off the silicone. I have had no leak issues. I am sure the new O ring is an improvement but to play it safe I'll keep using the silicone. Good luck!
@scottzinser4500
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Carter for the info. Do you also use the silicone on the usb port? And do you secure the battery compartment latches with anything, so you cant unlatch them by accident in the water? I had heard that its wise to use a heavy duty rubber band that covers both latches tightly. Thanks again and really looking forward to you next video! p.s.- did you ever get an Instagram account? Its awesome for posting your finds and short vids. Scott.

Incredible gold piece. You must have a really good site there, that's probably never been hunted or was hunted by terrible metal detectors back when. Rarely do I ever see anyone dig pre-1930's coinage out of the water unless it was a recent dropped wheat cent or something along those lines. Good job on containing yourself MOSTLY throughout the video. I probably would have spit out my mouthpiece when I saw a seated, attempted to scream out loud, but realistically gulped in a ton of sea water and died. LOL. I think you're right with the marks on the reverse. Probably part of an old pin of some sorts. A LOT of gold pieces you see nowadays, especially on eBay too, are damaged due to people during the 1800's taking them and making all sorts of jewelry pieces out of them and giving them to their spouse, girlfriend, etc.
@jamescrow4078

Whatever you do -- don't rub the surface of the coin. You will impart scratches which will lower the value of the coin quite a bit. Even under water the corrosion, sand, grit being rubbed off with a glove will basically destroy the coin's surface and thus the value.

I absolutely need to buy batteries and go dirt fishing. I know a few places nearby, but a bit further away are potential 1700's to 1800's coins at another area of town with loads of poor people populating the area most likely wanting to share in the finds. Most of which has never been hunted.
