Such an enjoyable channel, and for the first time, a complete novice demonstrating and explaining 'simple' fabrication. My car will likely need some welding for next year's MOT. I've been looking and thinking, it's a basic repair. After watching this, I think I will give it a go! Nice one.

Nice work! To hold captive nuts in place while you weld them just shove a bolt through and tighten it up.

Good work! I was surprised to see that bracket again. I did the same jobb last spring but I used cardboard aided design instead. Regarding the nuts not staying in place, just put a screw through it. And on the plug weld you can go fairly hot. Make a few holes in a scrap bit and try out how hot you can go. A little circle motion around the edgy makes it look nice.

I did see your thread on 3Geez, it set the standard I was trying to achieve! Good idea with the bolt/screw, I was worried I might weld it all together but I guess not if I’m careful. I tried one circular motion but was burning through the edge of the top layer - maybe a bit too much power. Will try again next time.

Well done: these flat n fold jobs are surprisingly tricky to get really accurate. Loved your method for coming up with the shape. A couple of points: hold your captive nuts in place with a bolt from behind. Just use a nut on the bolt as a stop, so you don't have a load of thread poking through on the side you're welding. It's a good idea to make the captive nut's hole a bit generous as you often find the thread is tight on one bit of the hole otherwise (if so, just run a tap through later). Recommend Wurth Bright Zinc as brilliant weld-thru. Plug welds: yes, plenty of power, start in the middle (so hit lower layer first),and do a little outward spiral. If you can't see a pimple on the underside, you need more power. When you use on bodywork, 5mm hole just right. When doing thin sheet steel (e.g. your Honda) use 0.6mm wire. 0.8 is a bit clumsy.

Captive nut......keeping it in place........ 1 ) drop of superglue 2 ) put bolt with nut through from tin / blank side.....wind in bolt on nut that is " becoming " captive.....wind up " back / non captive " nut ., 'till all tight ., then tack " captive "....Tooling is only a means to an end....if you can get round it.,it saves you falling over it ...

Great work Martin, I always preferred metalwork to woodwork at school as I could then weld back on the bits I'd cut off in error... Seriously CAD? brilliant, I'd still be selecting a large hammer to make it fit. It may be that nobody will see it again BUT you will know! Excellent, I know where to come for my metal fabrication needs. Sadly I’m old enough to get the $6 million man reference😭

Brilliant, thank you! Metalwork and Woodwork at O level (despite being called a wood butcher by my teacher). Should be compulsory for everyone these days? Wood joints now are little more than two flat surfaces joined by big nails fired from a gun. Now going to binge watch the rest of your stuff. You know you are going to need to build a chassis for the Rancho? Friend had one of the first, everything rusted, even the fibreglass. Brilliant concept (?) but all built Friday afternoon's, late Friday afternoon's. Thank you for your inspirational content. Perhaps this year to start my special car?

Ha, yes, the Honda was supposed to be an easy introduction to metalwork as a run-up to doing the Rancho, but I’m wondering if it should have been the other way round! Hoping to crack on with both in the coming weeks so there’ll be more videos on metal bashing 😊

@@GrandThriftAuto Wasn't sure you would remember (phew). Wouldn't it be great to call your business something like, FSRE & FD Ltd. with everyone wearing red. A great anacronym with the original words being 'long' forgotten (1972) .... Unless Fsree & Fddy become words? Everytime a customer asks, ... Which ones, 'Pink'... you would just corpse and be totally unable to work. Rule Number ? being, never explain who FSRE and FD are/were. Or, "Why do you all wear red? ".... cue corpse. Definitely motorize your bead roller! I used a $50 (us) winch motor and a cheap on off foot pedal all from Harbor freight. I made a coupler on my small lathe but I'm sure you could modify a regular motor shaft coupler. I went fancy and wired in a speed control and a reversing switch but probably overkill lol. Great video, keep'em coming!

Nice work. It may be easier to drill holes in a pre-formed part by clamping a piece of wood between the 'legs' and drilling into the wood. Also, putting a heat sink behind the thin metal you're welding may reduce the risk of it burning away. Just a couple of thoughts. Loved the vid. Many thanks.

That’s the plan. There’s a lot to do though, and I want to get to the next proper stage before I do a video on it, so it depends on how busy I am with work over the next few days. There might be a quick video on the blast cabinet first. Don’t hate me.
