Reason for the missing music tracks is probably expired music licenses. A commissioned 3rd-party composer or licensed tracks were likely hired/bought for use in the game. The rights for this music is held for a limited time before it can't be sold anymore without renewing the rights. This has happened in other games. Mafia 2 had a large repertorie of 40' and 50's music that was patched out several years after release. The other option was to cease selling the game.
@01100101011100100111
4 жыл бұрын
I was about to question the likelyhood of just one third of the track being third party, but then remembered it's orchestral. My ears aren't good enough to tell if that's an actual orchestra (somewhat unlikely), but that or the composer not wanting to cheapen their work could be the reason. It'd be nice to get confirmation if this is the reason or not.
@dorpth
2 жыл бұрын
Or that a lot of CD-ROM games at the time had their music as actual music tracks played straight off the disc. I think Quake 1 & 2 did this. Maybe some issue where a lot of reissued games from that era only grabbed the data track and none of the music? It would just be too much work to do so?
@albertjordan3249

Yup, people like to think that all media is permanent and immutable. Similar to how the BBC recorded over a ton of its old programming (Doctor Who being a famous example) to save tape. The BBC didn't think their broadcasts were worth saving because tape was expensive and they thought if they REALLY wanted to broadcast it again they would just assemble the actors (or an entirely different set if necessary) and do it again. They considered them as essentially televised plays... as long as you have the script you can always put the play on again. Similarly with music licensing there is no way of knowing how popular a game is going to be, or that people are going to play it 2 decades later. So its a lot cheaper to get a limited license rather than an unlimited one that is permanently bound to the product in perpetuity. Digital distribution wasn't even a consideration back then (steam wouldn't exist for another 4 years), and the idea that your game would live on beyond the original run of CD-ROMs wasn't something anybody thought about.

That's a problem with such great games that use such great yet unfortunately timed music licenses... and I fear for the likes of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy as the years go by. Here's hoping we get a gaming group that focuses on restoring these licenses, akin to Nightdive bringing back abandonware to become officialware. Would even say the same on bringing back licensed games like the LotR: Battle for Middle-earth duology, Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie, and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena to the likes of Steam and GOG without a hassle.

HI @MandaloreGaming, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am a big fan of your videos and have watched almost every single one of your videos. I look forward to your videos because I absolutely love the way you explain every single detail and that is something I truly appreciate in a gamer. But my thanks isn't just for your game videos/reviews, it's for something extremely important to me. For many years of my gaming life, there was this game that eluded me completely. I only knew a single mechanic in it - 'You could pick up enemy robot parts and make robots at your base'. I have searched high & low for a game with that description but to no avail. At the time I played this, I was extremely young & was playing a demo version that was available in India which is a huge thing. So when I tuned into your latest video - Metal Fatigue - I kid you not, I leapt in absolute joy. The moment you mentioned about robot parts falling off, a well of memories came back to me and I finally found the game I have been looking for almost 20 years I guess. I truly want to say this, 'Thank You'. Thank you very much for bringing back a piece of my childhood to me. Apologies for such a lengthy comment but I just had to tell you that you have changed my life today. Thanks a bunch. The issues with Quake 1 and 2 were the licenses used for the soundtracks... Quake 1 being done by Nine Inch Nails, Quake 2 by Sonic Mayhem and a few other contributing artists like Rob Zombie. It's weird because all the music was composed FOR the games, but the licensing still makes it difficult to get a proper release. But yeah to your point, we can at least get the music going using source ports, which is how you probably wanna be playing them anyway.

The reason the pre-remaster releases of Quake 1 and 2 had no music was because the games were searching for a disk to read the music off of and couldn't find any. Playing the digital releases old games like them with a music CD still in your PC's disk drive can actually cause some of them to play that CD in place of its OST because of this.

There's probably other games with the layer system, but Planetary Annihilation has a planet layer with water, ground and air, and also an orbital layer. Units that can attack orbit from the ground are either static or later game units. Each of the maps are made up of one or more small planets orbiting a star. Orbital isn't just a second layer you can use to make suprise attacks, it's the way you get to other planets. What's kinda interesting is that orbital units are always visible. It adds an interesting balance that makes orbital units interesting in a way that isn't just another rock in the rock paper scissors of ground units.

The hand to hand fighting between the combots sounds like my local garbage truck waking up the neighborhood by emptying the trash cans with righteous fury.

Why did the "Right version" label have a ♂ symbol next to it? Is it a joke I'm not getting?

One of my absolute favorite RTSs. I sunk hundreds of hours into this. I just loved putting the mechs together, stealing opposing pieces, etc. So cool!

Man, Mandalore's videos are like finding $10 in some old jeans. It doesn't happen that often, and you kinda forget that $10 exists until BAM what a pleasant surprise my day is made.

Weird that in a short span of time a few very similar RTS games came out. Machines: Wired for War (1999) Warzone 2100 (1999) Metal Fatigue (2000) Earth 2150 (2000) All 3d RTS games with future setting, robots and some overlapping features (underground, units customization)

You should review Warzone 2100, a 3d rts from Eidos released back in 1999. It had unit customization and an interesting emphasis on artillery or long-range attacks that other games weren't doing at the time.

'Twas a good review, and it's neat to know that my memory isn't as foggy as I'd have thought. I am a little curious though.. If we're talking about RTS, anywho, and the glorious C&C remaster (with a few of its minor issues) just released, clearly demanding attention... ... ... Ever heard of Armies of Exigo? A Warcraft-esque RTS that also tried to play around with an underground layer on the maps, yet I hear so few people speak of it I almost worry it's a fever dream like Metal Fatigue
