never stop making videos !! your analyses are so interesting !! i would love to see your analysis of the ending of danganronpa 2, as it deals a lot with philosophical concepts. its even more interesting when you consider that the game is a direct response to the game flower sun and rain. i highly recommend the silver case trilogy (especially fsr) and would love to see your thoughts on that series someday

If you liked Metal Gear Solid 2 and its ending, I can't recommend Patlabor The Movie 2 enough. Kojima had definitely seen it and pulled aspects of it for that game (and Mamoru Oshii's filmography as a whole) so it serves as an interesting companion piece to look at the Japanese political context which spawns Metal Gear's commentary. Without spoiling too much, it follows this police procedural drama (albeit the police have giant robots at their disposal) about a terrorist campaign attempting to restore Japan's right to belligerency. It looks at terrorism as a kind of memetic warfare given that militarily it's pretty ineffective and instead is an attempt to manipulate the opinions of those who feel threatened by it. In contrast, Japan's "peacetime" status quo relies on the exploitation of the developing world: specifically the "Japanese Self-Defense Force" was taking part in a UN peacekeeping operation to reconstruct the Cambodian government at the time of the film's release. MGS2 was going to make even more similar points to this movie early on in its development when the game was going to end with Arsenal Gear crashing through the Brooklyn Bridge and displacing the statue of liberty, which were toned down due to the dev team fearing terrorist attacks against Konami in the wake of 9/11. Not to say that any of this discounts the artistry in MGS2 but it provides some equally fascinating context for an already really layered game.

When people talk about “they don’t want politics in their video games” what they really mean is they don’t want politics dealing with minorities, women, or LGBT. They will totally buy and love games with politics that don’t have anything to do with those. Bioshock, Fallout, Metal Gear, all politic heavy games but those first three subjects I mention take a backseat to the other.
