Got back the soprano piece. This piece has been an experiment, a gamble from day one. This small opening metal soprano piece was going to be a challenging job. Expert refacer, great saxophonist, and my old friend Adam Niewood worked on this for me. The unfortunately small tip opening of this stock unplayed piece combined with the strange large oval bite plate Selmer designed on these pieces pose major challenges and we flew too close to the sun. Refinement of the baffle after opening up brought it thru the metal down to the bite plate above. Adam felt this was necessary for the piece to play with a good tone. Too much baffle makes the piece too tinny and shrill. Adam knows I'm a sound guy, and what's most important is that I dig the mouthpiece so I can actually play it. And I will play it. It's a powerful piece - lost of punch to the sound. And I've never really used a metal piece on soprano. I'm a little surprised with some of the sonic changes the soprano undergoes with the metal piece. very interesting. I'll continue to play this piece and maybe in a few weeks do a comparison video with the rubber Selmer pieces that I have in the drawer. Thanks for watching and listening. Leave a comment.
