Because it's more confusing. Even to understand the positive charge or hole movement. That's why they go with electron movement.

Not really... If the semiconductor sample is of n-type , then the +ve terminal with the semiconductor and -ve terminal with the metal is the setup for REVERSED BIAS... And the vice versa is a FORWARD BIAS. The +ve charge appearing on the semiconductor part is after the electron transfer to form the depletion region!!!

Nice... however, then bending of the bands has not been explained. Why can't the bands simply fall down without having to bend?

Hi buddy, Fermi level is always close to electron filled region. Here in metal side electron concentration is high after depletion region formed. So it goes higher to lower side with bending depends on e concentration.

Because the energy function of a material is always continuous. Now energy is just potential scaled by charge and we know that potential is integral of electric field with distance...and integrals are always continuous because they have to be differentiable.

+Memo “MekoxTwiSparkle” Pony In case you were still wondering, I think I can try my hand at explaining it. When a metal-semiconductor junction is formed, electrons flow from the semiconductor to the metal, filling states in the metal's conduction band in order to bring the Fermi energies to an equal level. He states that not only electrons on the surface of the semiconductor migrate to the metal, but some from the bulk of the semiconductor material as well. The depletion region is the region in the semiconductor from which electrons flow into the metal, and as you can see it is not limited to only the surface. Hope this helped, and if anyone spots an error please correct me.

Depletion means deficiency. Electrons move from one material to another so it leaves deficiency in number to its own side. Since no electron we call it holes or. Positive. Combination of this electron and positive holes region is called depletion region.
