After so many years Load still being underrated😅. Certainly deserves a better position, retrospectively got better general appreciation and is commonly accepted by many voices as an underrated album. Once you accept the sharp musical style changes, there is great songwriting, instrumental arrangements, further introspective lyrics and overall creative evolution in this work. If only have they mixed and edited both Load/Reload in an unique album with the best 14 songs of this era, you got a masterpiece and one of their best.
@MetalTrenches
Жыл бұрын
I've had many years to accept the musical change. In fact as a kid born in the 80's, Load WAS the era of Metallica I grew up with. There are some great tracks, but that doesn't make it underrated imo. Like we both said, put the good tracks of both albums together and it could be one of the best rock albums of the 90's.
@xalba5245

@@MetalTrenches Load is one of the most controversial album ever in the genre, and received disproportionated hate for the band drastic changes in style and musical direction, and even appearance and looks. All this stuff for many years inevitably triggered negative reactions towards a very good album in his way, but anyway almost anything would pale against the legacy of his excellent preceding albums (the era of Metallica from Kill,em all in 1983 until their peak in the early nineties with the massive success of the Black Album is almost unparalleled in the genre) But Load have aged much better than many of the 90's music, and retrospective reviews by the media and fans generally agree to consider it to be severely underrated and overall a pretty good work in the end. I personally put "Until it Sleeps, "Bleeding me" or "The Outlaw Torn" in the top tier Metallica songs, just one step behind their great mastepieces like Master, Fade to Black or Bells. Adding behind pretty good tracks like Hero of the Day, Wasting my hate or King Nothing, and forget about 2-3 filler expendable song, (i would say even the country vibes of Mama said brings some variety and range to the album to the very least, welcomed or not). Lastly added to this great production values and notable improvements with introspective lyrics and complex themes, and the sum of all of it makes Load clearly worthy of the B grade and also clearly better than the reasonably satysfying Harwired or Magnetic. I go further here and impolularly put Load even better than Kill,em all, great debuting album in his way but a bit monotonous and rusty with boring generic lyrics and archetypical genre themes about destruction and death.

I like the idea of pulling the best of load and reload into one 45 minute album. That said it would still get a C grade in my book as i would grade them independently at a D. Just my opinion. They're such a legacy band that they could release an album that's nothing but a dog farting for 54 minutes, and half the people who listen to metal would salivate at the prospect of more Metallica while the other half would be like "Well, this isn't their best work but remember when they wrote "Ride the Lightning"?"

What I don't care for is 72 Seasons is the same tone as Death Magnetic and Hardwired. One thing that really set their first 6 albums apart was you got a different tone with each album. Each album had a very distinct sound. These last 3 albums just sound the same. Take someone who has never heard Metallica, and you can mix any of the songs from the last 3 albums and they can't tell what album they are from. It's a bit dissapointing and makes the songs less memorable.
@treff9226

That's a bullseye statement for me, the guitar tones especially are too samey! Songs are blurring together, with copycat production. They do need someone to throw a wrench into their far too isolated recording process, they need a shake up! That said, I do find much to like on these last three albums, just lacking in diversity and sonic variety.

Thank you for making this video. By the way, it’s refreshing to see someone talk about their albums with open mindedness and not following whatever trend the Metallica heaters or following at the time. I’m so tired of hearing people cry about how they don’t listen to any of the albums past the 80s or complaining about that. Lars has always been a bad drummer but they never complained about that until they heard that interview with Scott from Anthrax because before the only thing they ever complained about was the first three or four albums were perfect, and didn’t have anything wrong with them and they’ve suck since then. Well, if they’ve always thought he was a bad drummer one and they bring that up when they’re talking about how great those 80s albums were? Some fans in the middle community just bitch for the sake of bitching I’m convinced. But yeah, there are some good songs off the loaded and reload album I think. No I wouldn’t consider them thrash metal but I keep an open mind and listen to a lot of different genres of music. I love metal but just because an album is pure metal doesn’t mean it’s good either. There are hundreds of metal albums out there that just sound like a guitar store falling down a flight of stairs.

I hear you, man. To me, Metallica pre 91 is untouchable. But, they haven't put out a great album since, although they have put out great songs. If you made a 9 song album with Load and Reload, you'd have banger of an album. I personally like St. Anger. It lacks focus and solos, but that was a good direction. I think with the last couple, again take 4 or 5 songs off each, and you have a fantastic album. Metallica still writes great songs, just a lot of filler in between. But, I get the idea that people stop listening and then complain. I'm also a huge Megadeth fan, and it's all I hear. People talk endlessly about the RIP lineup, but don't remember while that lineup made RIP, they also made the more commercial albums, as well. And they've put out a few banger albums since 2004, even the last two, but people wouldn't know because they stopped listening after 94. So, it gets annoying. I'm glad Megadeth and Metallica are still around and doing what they want. They can't please everyone and they can't keep making their masterpiece albums over and over again. Are these bands putting out their best work now? Of course not. But, who cares. They deserve the respect for having made albums that defined a genre, and had a huge impact on the metal world.

@Metalton95

@@isaiahchristoffersen8579 Sure, Dyers Eve stands as arguably Lars' one and only "extreme" metal performance (maybe Fight Fire With Fire as well). But his REAL quality on the drums is how catchy and "singable" his fills are. Sure, he doesn't do crazy shit or usually use much double bass. But tell me ANY thrash fan who cannot sing every single fill on Disposable Heroes' 1.5 minute long intro, Justice's title track, Creeping Death or, well, Dyers Eve.

Great list. The only thing I would personally change is putting Justice higher than Muppets mainly because I'm remastered the whole album myself with enhanced bass and brums and it sounds amazing when you can actually feel what it's trying to convey, but again it's something I've done in retrospect so perhaps I wouldn't changed the list on that alone.

I know this is an exceptionally hot take, but I enjoy post St. Anger Metallica more than black album. Death Magnetic, Hardwired, and 72 Seasons all feel like they have better metal riff writing and I find the weird structures to be charming. Interestingly, I think some of the reasons I actually prefer them over the black album are precisely why other people don't. Even you hit on this. Black album gets praised for being a super refined and accessible yet still heavy metal album. For me it's super polished to the point that it loses some character. I like some of the tracks, but I like them less than other people seem to. On the other hand I actually find some of the longer passages on later albums (the ones people would call needlessly long, perhaps) to be almost hypnotic in their repetition. Most critics want the fat trimmed off it seems, but for me that fat is where a lot of the flavor is. I do acknowledge I'm in the minority on this though.

I actually agree with just about everything that you said here, including the tier rankings, which I would honestly say is probably identical to how I would rank their albums. I also agree they have been seriously shooting themselves in the foot comparing the new albums to Kill Em All. Comparing them to the more mid-tempo Black Album I think is a more favorable comparison. And again, I 100% agree on METALLICA. CUT. YOUR. ALBUMS. DOWN. TO. 40-50. MINUTES. PLEASE. JESUS. FUCKING. CHRIST.

Unpopular opinion. For me personally, St. Anger gives me Nu Metal era nostalgia vibes. I love the rawness of the album and the catchy tracks. Also, the grunge influence of the 90s albums works well with Metallica. Each era provides something different. 72 Seasons has lots of great new tracks. I'll admit that I'm not big on thrash metal, I'm more into melodeath, rap metal, and atmospheric stuff. But I do love their 80s classics. My Metallica Ranking from worst to best: 13. Lulu 12. ...And Justice for All 11. Garage Inc. 10. Kill 'Em All 9. Hardwired... to Self-Destruct 8. Death Magnetic 7. 72 Seasons 6. Load 5. Reload 4. St. Anger 3. Master of Puppets 2. All I got to say is you have to be on absolute crack rocks if you think 72 Seasons is anywhere close to being better than Load or Reload. I mean just compare the singles alone. Load: "Until It Sleeps" "King Nothing" "Hero of the Day" "Mama Said" Reload: "The Memory Remains" "The Unforgiven II" "Fuel" "Better Than You" 72 Seasons: "Lux Æterna" "Screaming Suicide" "If Darkness Had a Son" "72 Seasons" Let's be real honest, 72 Seasons isn't in competition with Load or Reload, it's in competition with St. Anger and LuLu.

Stfu. 72 Seasons isnt in competition with anything. Stop comparing shit. A band evolves. It has clear nods to the old classics like Kill em All, Master and Justice while they are still evolving as a band and trying new things. They are never going to try and copy any old record because it doesnt make sense. They could easily do it in the phenomenal shape they are in now playing wise. But as I said it doesnt make any sense to copy yourself or others. You need to write what you want to write. And in this case they got influences from all kinds of eras in their career without actually copying themselves. The album is great

I know not an album but the '87 EP is so fucking good. RTL & MOP are my top picks and METALLICA at their best (best at the time too, very ahead of everything really) with AJFA closely after but yeah length is an issue but gotta appreciate the technicality/complexity of it all. Black album is okay but that was the beginning of the end for their development and relevancy and me giving a fuck about their existence. They are still one of my favorite Thrash bands but strictly in the 80's. But I love their chemistry to this day, noting funnier than James giving Lars timing tips and Kirk coming out with classics like: "it's the notes in between" 😂

My 2 cents here. Some hot takes which you might find stupid included: S: Master, Ride, AJFA A: Black Album B: Kill Em All, Hardwired, DM, Seasons, Load (I re-listened to their discography lately and I actually enjoyed Load now. I'd agree with you that it would be better to make 1 album out of Load and Reload and cut the worse songs out, but it's still underrated IMHO, as well as their newer stuff), Garage Inc. (they were always good at doing covers) C: ReLoad D: - E or maybe even F: St.Anger (the production and some lyrics on this one really make my ears bleed. It's the only album I find just straight up bad with little redeeming qualities)

Oh yeah, the album with Don't Tread On Me (trash). And dragging mid-tempo songs in The God That Failed, Sad But True (the main riff & verses), My Friend of Misery (the chorus..). And their most anticlimatic chorus on a ballad in Nothing Else Matters. And 3 short thrashers that would've been forgotten on any of the prior albums (Struggle Within, Through the Never, Holier Than Thou). I'd remove half the songs and change something on most of the others (Struggle is SO close to being very good, but ends up short, for instance).

Pretty solid tier list. In my opinion the album had a lot of experimentation showing us new ideas and influences. Some of their highlighted songs other than the 4 singles, you must burn, too far gone, crowned of barbed crown and inamorata although a little long, they were pretty solid tracks. At the moment, I dont think 72 seasons is better than Hardwired, but I think it has the potential to be..

From all the Metallica fans I have ever interacted with including me, peoples favorite albums always come down to Master of puppets, And Justice for All or the black album(always has been over rated though). I actually feel kill em all is easily the best thrash debut if we're just talking the big four, Killing is my business is just one direction and the songs just blend together because of the lack of diversity Slayers debut while being my favourite thrash band just doesn't sound like slayer and they hadn't found there sound and well Anthrax have a solid debut too to be honest with fistful of metal, but I like kill em all, still has afew of there best tracks they've ever released, really I think you have to look more to bands like exodus and testament for real competition when it comes to thrash debuts

I remember when Death Magnetic first came out. It was such a breath of fresh air after that St. Anger mess! I still hold Death Magnetic in very high regard. It's still the closest they came to their 80's output. Hardwired was pretty good too! But 72 Seasons I felt was underwhelming.

Comparing this to Hardwired I would say that the best songs from that album are better than best songs from this album, but after that all the rest is so much better in 72 seasons. In hardwired almost all of the B-side was some of Metallica's worst songs. In this album I can't say that any song is a stinker. Very solid and cohesive album. Clearly better than Hardwired. I have now idea how I will feel about each song year from now. From Hardwired my opinion stayed the same from the get go.

I listened to 72 Seasons only once so far, and while it's too early for me to tell if I like it or not, I will admit to these couple observations: - James' voice sounds REALLY good on some songs, specifically on Chasing Light, and really old on others. - These songs are arguably at their best when they tap into that Load/ReLoad-era hard rock groove. That's where I feel they (and more specifically Lars) are at their best nowadays. I am going copy-and-paste this comment onto The Metal Meltdown's, Metal Trenches' and Thralls of Metal's reviews for consistency's sake.
