The Black Album gave bands and record companies the idea that Thrash could be commercially successful if it was watered down enough - but almost every other band that attempted to water their sound down flopped and just sounded wimpy. Metallica had the song-writing chops to write good "Commercial Metal" and had the production budget to make it sound super polished. Whereas other Thrash bands ended up just sounding like wimpy versions of their former selves - neither appealing to the mainstream NOR the underground. I've got some sympathy for bands back then, I mean record contracts were NOT a guarantee and they were living from album to album - Thrash was stuck because it wasn't extreme enough for the new Death Metal addicts and it wasn't commercial enough to appeal to the masses.
@KD-7705
7 ай бұрын
I think Megadeth had/has the least worst commercial sound, at least of the big 4. This even despite Mustaine’s “unique” vocals. It’s hit or miss but while I actually enjoy some of Megadeth’s later stuff I can’t listen to anything from Metallica after AJFA other than some covers.

That question regarding the Black Album is good. I never really thought about it like that, but indeed, MANY thrash bands released very "commercial" albums after that came out. And yeah, Megadeth's Countdown probably played a major role in that too. I'd add, the grunge shit that blew up at that time probably played a part as well.

I would blame the first Machine Head, Biohazzard, Sepultura "Chaos A.D", Pantera and the general rise of groove metal for the way "Time Bomb" sounds. Plus, that was in 1994. The year A LOT of extreme bands started going "groove". Examples being Obituary "World Demise" (a record I like), Napalm Death "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" (not bad. Lot's of Helmet influence, better than "Diatribes"), etc. Fuck, it's the 30th anniversary of a lot of these this year. 1994 to 1995 was kinda depressing for extreme metal desptite some great titles (CC, Deicide, etc) in those years.

@@Leave_The_Hall_69 So did you get a kick out my bullshit posts from yesterday afternoon? I bombarded your phone with several over-the-top posts, on top of that I thought responding to month old comments, from month old videos would increase the idiot-factor of it all. Sure i was a little drunk when posting, but not blitzed, twas all an act bruh, one of my Reddit-buddies (because I have such a thing after all) put me up to it. What was I drinking yesterday? two-hearted ale and several rums, zaya, plantation xo, plantation isle of fiji, and apple estate 8 year.🍻

Since Sacred Reich and Demolition Hammer weren't doing power ballads, they were probably more influenced by Soundgarden and Nirvana and record label pressure than they were by Metallica. But yes, everybody ripped off Metallica from day one, because Metallica ruled from 1983 to 1991. History lesson - Metallica invented death metal as well: Fight Fire With Fire, 1984.

quite interesting statement, I wouldn't say Metallica invented with Fight fire with fire, definitely it might be an influence but just one of many

In what world is Fight Fire With Fire a death metal song? A great song, but it is pure thrash.

Fight Fire with Fire is death metal? Bro just stay out of conversations like this, you're trolling. The closest to death metal that any album the big 4 made is Hell Awaits by Slayer.

You could say Fight Fire with Fire had an influence on what would become death metal, but it's certainly not death metal. Pretty clear distinction there.
