What is "St. Anger: Redux"?
"St. Anger: Redux" takes the original album and works to address one of the most common issues with the material, that being it's excessive runtime. Over 25 minutes of music has been cut to streamline and focus each song whilst maintaining the core energy/vibe within.
What exactly is changed?
Whilst I don't have a full list of exact changes made per song below is a duration comparison for how much each song was changed:
1. Frantic - Was: 05:50 / Now: 04:03
2. St. Anger - Was: 07:21 / Now: 05:08
3. Some Kind Of Monster - Was: 08:25 / Now: 04:11
4. Dirty Window - Was: 05:24 / Now: 03:46
5. Invisible Kid - Was: 08:30 / Now: 04:10
6. My World - Was: 05:45 / Now: 03:31
7. Shoot Me Again - Was: 07:10 / Now: 04:57
8. Sweet Amber - Was: 05:27 / Now: 04:34
9. The Unnamed Feeling - Was: 07:09 / Now: 06:04
10. Purify - Was: 05:13 / Now: 03:53
11. All Within My Hands - Was: 08:47 / Now: 05:19
Almost all edits were made linearly to preserve song structures as much as possible so no parts were copy/pasted from different areas to fit anywhere else in a song. The only exceptions to this are one section in "All Within My Hands" near the end and, more notably, the ending of Sweet Amber. The Sweet Amber edit was a personal choice as it felt the most "natural" ending out of the different, more unedited versions I tried.
But what about the production?
There are many videos on KZitem that address the production of St. Anger but to me it's never been the "actual" problem with the album. Fixing the production still leaves you with the excessive runtime so I've always wanted to take a stab at something like this to see what the results would be and it's been a lot of fun to work on. Also I have no actual production/mixing skills so this is the best you're gonna get from me, sorry. (Truth be told, might be a hot take - Aside from maybe turning the drums down like 20/30%, I actually think the production is pretty good and adds a lot to the music).
Why should I trust you?
Just to make it clear: I'm not a producer, I don't have a musical background & I have no concept of music theory. All of this was done through me using Audacity, just feeling out the songs and what sounded good to my ears. I will admit that there's a 100% guarantee that I've cut someone's favourite part in at least one of these songs as I was very liberal in the cutting process. I just thought that some people would think that this sounds cool like I did so.
Wait, hasn't this been done before?
Again, being 100% honest, I actually had no idea that this concept was already done until I was like halfway through doing it. I checked and came across a similar video on KZitem and just figured "Well...Already got this far might as well finish it". I actually haven't fully listened to any other edits so I have no idea how close/far any of mine are but hey if per chance you don't like what I did with shortening St. Anger then maybe try this video out for an alternative: • Metallica - St. Anger ...
One final note: This video isn't meant to "convert" anyone who didn't already like St. Anger into a fan. If you already don't like the album then this likely won't change your mind as there's still a lot of core issues that can't be fixed through any amount of editing/remastering (Songwriting choices, performances etc). There's a lot of things in this video that I'm not 100% happy with in terms of transitions and song pacing but a lot of that is just how the album was recorded and the songs were written. That being said, hope you enjoy the content!
