The most heartbreaking thing about St. Anger is that it should’ve been their return to glory. Over a year of internal conflict and overcoming personal demons, James going to rehab, everyone clashing as they try to find the magic they once had... I mean, coupled with the really good documentary Some Kind of Monster, this should’ve been a renaissance album. But it just... fell really flat instead. It’s a damn shame.
@GeneFJacket

St. Anger is made all the more frustrating because not only SHOULD it have been better, it clearly COULD have. There are sketches of legitimately great Metallica tracks on there...Sweet Amber, Unnamed Feeling, All Within My Hands...parts of those songs are genuinely incredible, they're just so bloated and aimless. The production is terrible, the drums sound god-awful, the whole "no solos" mandate was just moronic...just mistake after boneheaded mistake. Had they used what's on the record as a starting point, refined the hell out of the songs, added some damn solos, and cut a good 2-3 minutes off each track it could have been one of their best.

If you find renditions of the songs that fix the obnoxious snare drum and poor production it's really not *that* bad of an album --- some hits, some misses, but I find myself actually enjoying it overall when it has the polish it deserves. Of course better polish on the sound doesn't change the fact it's overall a failed experiment on Metallica's part, that came off the heels of their most popular era. If James was in better shape and the band undergoing less turbulence overall I agree that maybe St. Anger could have been the kick-off to a new creative era for them, but unfortunately they were in no position to make the next Master of Puppets or Black Album, so now here we are. At least we got "Frantic."

Back then St. Anger was the first metal album I ever listened to and without the context of everything they did before it was a really cathartic experience to hear it. Because of that to this day I hold the album in high regard even if their 80s run up until the Black Album ended up overshadowing it when I became more familiar with their history. It has a place, an important one for me at least and I think that it was significant to many teenagers of the early 2000s in that way. Which is not to say that it became a classic but that the very distinct sound it had resonated with me and among all the well-deserved criticism it got and still gets there are fans out there who appreciate its existence.

Regardless of your personal preference Master of Puppets is undeniably their best album, closely followed by Ride the Lightning and the Black Album. Damn Melon, That AJFA take is legit one of the worst i've ever heard. Never once got the impression they were "Running out of ideas" As i would argue its them at their most creative tbh. Musically its far and away their most technical and progressive album to date, And lyrically i believe its peak James. Blackened, AJFA, One, Harvester Of Sorrow & Dyers Eve are some of the deepest, Rawest songs he's written. I think Lars is at his absolute best here, And id say the riffs on this album are easily some of their best as well. Overall despite the lack of bass and somewhat brittle production, I think musically its every bit as good and in some spots arguably better than the rest of their 80's material.

As many here, I would rank "And Justice for all" a lot higher (certainly in the top 3). It is their most progressive album. I've listened to it a million times and it never gets boring. The riffs, the breaks and the solos are great. The production is a matter of taste. I love the super percussive, super tight, extremely clean sound, and, to be honest, I never missed the bass until I read everywhere that it needs more bass. The sound is indeed flatter and not as heavy as the sound on "Master of Puppets" or the Black Album, but many progressive arrangements probably wouldn't have sounded that good with such a fat and heavy sound.

I just don't get it. I think other than death magnetic, and justice for all has the most filler of any other Metallica album tbh. It has some fantastic moments that really stand out but overall I think it's one of their least consistent albums, the drums are probably the most consistently great parts to it but I think every single song was drug out so much longer than it had to be - I mean damn dude did they really need to double down on repeating 2 part choruses like 10 times every song? They had already done it too much on master of puppets, I love disposable heroes and pepper messiah but god damn they drug those out with choruses we didn't need to hear so much. AJFA was them doubling down on that and going way way worse with it in my opinion. If they'd have cut out a lot of the filler I'd agree that it's great but they really stretched it out in a really lazy way IMHO. (The lack of bass makes it even worse to me because it makes it sound like a demo. It's passable in terms of listenability for me since I am mainly a guitarist but I love bass as an instrument and I can't help but wonder how much more interesting the album could've been if it had bass throughout actually because a lot of times the interesting chord changes and harmonies are made much better depending on how the bass is interacting with it. Not having bass on a thrash album kind of wrecks it in my opinion because the guitars tend to be doing simple chords so much, 80% of it is either power chords via 5ths or 4ths and that on it's own is not sonically interesting - the bass is what adds the extra layer to the chords and the rest of the music because whatever extended parts there are to the guitar's power chord is played on the bass. I just don't get any of it man, there was a lot of potential on AJFA but I think they all stabbed themselves in the foot with how they went about it.

You are totally right. It's a great metal record for "beginners" if you know what I mean. Like, it is pretty heavy, it has catchy riffs, great vocals and lyrics, great solos, all of the good stuff that metal has to offer, but at the same time it's much more tight and "clean" than their early stuff. There isn't as many instrumental parts, songs usually aren't too long, have only one solo etc. Thrash metal isn't the easiest entrance to heavy music, you need to be already used to the sound of heavy stuff to enjoy that complicated and technical style of Justice or Master. Black Album on the other hand has songs like Wherever I May Roam or Enter Sandman that are great examples of how simple can be stronger. And I could easily play The Unforgiven or Nothing Else Matters to my classmates and the would like it.

So, there I am-- first day of school, 6:00 in the morning... waiting in my driveway for some guy named 'Kyle' to pick me up. Suddenly, in the distance, I hear a noise. It sounds like a train hurdling toward me. At the end of my little street... I see this purple, beat up, '78 Camero barreling down the road at about 70 mph. It comes to a screeching halt right in front of me-- with nothing but the sound and smell of an idle muscle car engine to greet me. I slowly open the passenger door... and am immediately blasted with the loudest and heaviest music I have ever heard. I look in, and there's just this kid in sunglasses sitting behind the wheel... looking straight forward, not even acknowledging my presence. The music was so loud... it would have been useless to try and make introductions anyway. So, I just sat down. The second my ass hit the seat, he floored the gas so hard, my door shut by itself. Even at 70 mph, it still took about 20 minutes to get to school. But there was no conversation to be had with this guy. All I could do was hold on tight, watch the scenery go by, and listen to heavy metal so loud, it filled the car like an air balloon. It was my very first introduction to Metalica. It was the Black Album. And it was the most incredibly mind-blowing thing I had ever listened to! Never did I know music could be this heavy, this soul crunching and this damn good. And this is how every morning started for me. Nothing but the Black Album-- morning, after morning, after morning. In fact, I started looking forward to it. That album became a part of me. After about 2 months cruising with silent-Kyle, I had every note, every tempo changes and every lyric memorized by heart. Finally, one day, I got the balls to turn the music down for a second. Kyle looked at me with the confused look on his face. All I said was, "This album is fucking awesome." He smiled and said... "You're God damn right--" and then he turned the volume back to full blast. It was a good talk! Today, I have a vast music collection and am well versed with all of Metalica's work. But, for me... the Black Album started it all and will forever be considered a masterpiece, in a league all to its own.

Everyone's talking about the low placement of AJFA... I'm over here contemplating how Tony ranked Kill 'Em All lower than The Black Album

I looked at a KZitem video of black album full and I remember reading Through the river there too. It wasn't until I actually listened to the song that I found out it's called Through the never

And "Kill them All." We don't need a douche review that was in his dad's bag when I was in Baghdad...

There are two types of people in the world: those who are qualified to talk about music and those who rate the black album over any of Metallica's first 4 records.
