This procedure can obviously be simplified. Acid hydrolysis did not work at all (H2SO4, various conc.).
During previous attempt, I have added much less NaOH than stoichiometric amount, as a result, there was starting material left and PH was around 9-10. So slight excess is needed. Another unknown variable is amount of water needed for reaction if you intend to store sodium methacrlyate crystals, but probably much less than I have used. Crystals would be much easier to purify either.
The product crystalized/melted at much lower temperature than specified in literature, so I suspect quite a bit of water as impurity, but possibly oligomers could have been formed (evidenced by vey gelly solution?).
This does not matter too much for me as my next step would be esterification, which will be highly experimental. Advice is wellcome!
Then I want to test performance of this crosslinker vs control. My goal is solid polymer under 2 minutes, but will see.
