07:30-08:30. It looks as though the Metra conductor has no idea how to hook up two pieces of rail equipment. Glad to see the UP workers know the hand gestures.

Not Metra. The conductor is UP. All the crews on this route are Union Pacific.

All the conductor is required to do is 'make the joint' or tie the two couplers together. All the remaining connections between two locomotives is the engineer's responsibility.

I think the i saw the 176 at the EMD plant in LaGrange last summer waiting to get picked up. And later i might have seen it working on an IHB freight after it was fixed. Don't quote me but, my mind thinks i saw it. I think the loco fire would explain why i "might" have seen it when i did. Both conductors could be UP.. Metra has their own crews that work Metra exclusively and UP has some that work freight and passenger. Come where i work if you want to see brand new locos that have caught fire. Being on fire is not just for 40 year olds. :-)

+Standard Gauge Railroader the head end power (hep) is in operation. it generates power for lighting heating and ac on the coaches. The diesel engine is in full throttle but the excitation of the alternator controls the movement of the train. the more excitation the more power to the traction motors.

Are there any Metra F40PH-3 or F40PHM-3 scrapped? Or all in service
@Thunderhawk-fr6qv

Yes. 205 was totaled in an accident down in Tennessee while en route to being rebuilt. The CSX train that was transporting it derailed and fell into a ravine with railcars crushing 205. It was scrapped on site. Also 215 and 118 are out of service due to fires. It is not known if they will return or be retired from service

So it takes Metra an exorbitant amount of people to make a single MU connection, they run a dead consist with HEP which is a huge waste of fuel, and they need to jump the batteries on a car. Seriously, it should not take that long to make an MU connection! Why am I complaining? The MBTA can't even push snow with a 3000 horsepower locomotive. Can any commuter rail service get some sense?

Please get rid of the General Motors EMD junk! ...and FRA, please get rid of that stupid bell nonsense -- this is the 21st Century, not the 18th Century steam era! Most other countries on this planet don't have bells on their trains and their accident record is NO worse off than anyone else! (Look at Japan as an example) Thanks!
