25:30 Fun fact, they wanted Metro 2033 to be open, or at least semi open (I think it was supposed to be similar to how Exodus has regions that you spend a chapter in). They also wanted multiplayer (Coop I think). They had to cut back on their ambitions in order to get the game out.

Agreed, First Played the game on Normal Mode when I first got the Redux version on the PS4 (it was one of the FIRST games I bought on the my PS4! It was on sale digital when I first boot the thing up after buying it LOL) and I had a interesting time but when I decided to go again to get the "Best Ending" (as in the CANON Book Ending! Yeah to me the best ending narrative was the Book Ending for me! Last Light I did go for the "No need to blow myself up let the kid Deus Ex Machina me" even though the Nuke ending was a good way to close of the series cause I wasn't too much of a Fan of Exodus! Game really didn't click for me till I got to the FINAL Level! THEN I felt like I was playing a Metro game again! The Open World didn't do it for me! Especially Caspian Sea other then the Spiderbug part which was "Metro" It's just not a Metro game unless I'm alternating between "Underground and Top Side!") so I decided to try Ranger Hardcore because I remember people saying "It made the game better AND BOY WERE THEY RIGHT! Normal Run I had so much ammo by the end I was not so conservative till Ranger Hardcore mode taught me a VALUABLE lesson about saving my ammo, checking my shots, and being MORE stealthy then previous and alot more John Wick Twitch Shooter with those DAMN MOLE RATS back at that one station defense after the Train Cart ride! The Librarians....well I use to just shot them in Normal! But Hardcore Miller's advice NOT to shot them and stare at them when they catch sight of you was VERY MUCH HEEDED. Especially the end of the first half of that level where I had to make a BEELINE for the door with that last one that aggros you LOL I don't like that I noticed I think in Last Light, how they kept the enemies BUFFED in Ranger Hardcore, yet I'm still a glass cannon! What I loved about RH in 2033 was the fact they were just as glass cannon as I was! Meaning I had to be smarter and more accurate at where I fired. And you can tell the game never even CONSIDERED Ranger Hardcore (If I remember with the original release, it was added in later I believe and I think you had to "pay for it?" which pissed off players! I may be misremembering those events) as I took "getting the Helsing late game" as the main example of this (I always got that one as my secondary till I could get "Poor Man's Rail Gun" Late game! Hell I viewed THAT gun as the upgrade to the Crossbow seeing as you reach the point where the Helsing outlives it's usefulness as a Stealth Weapon as you ain't going Stealth no more! Maybe even EARLIER then that when you stop running into Human enemies) I was REALLY begging for ammo because the "Action Sequences" were horrid to get through (especially the Train) even when I was being smart with ammo conservation! I was nearly running out that I had to Melee smart just to get ammo for the Shambler! with how I kept near running out and the Red Square Boss fight can FUCK RIGHT OFF! It was TEN TIMES harder in a BAD way same as the FINAL MISSION because of the Glass Cannon part of you NOT working well for them (I hated how I only had room for ONE build of two weapons for Last Light's Final Mission! Where in 2033! I replayed the game MANY times with different weapon layouts! Even beat the whole game using only the Duplet and Bastard! No changing out once I first get them and man was that funny and terrifying at the same time LOL! But Last Light I feel like I got PUNISHED ALOT if I dared to go any other weapon layout then what "was allowed" that I only ever played it ONCE in Ranger Hardcore, then never again in that difficulty when I replay it)

I’ve played WAY too much Metro 2033 Redux, and as it happens you can avoid almost the entire bridge sequence by going down some stairs on the communist side of the bridge, saving this guy they’re executing (or letting them kill him and waiting for them to walk away) and then climbing down some pipes and stuff to the ground below. You can take that route without having to hide from almost anyone and pop up via a little tunnel behind the nazi side. Beats the hell out of trying to sneak past or kill like 50 dudes.

I'd love to see you review a game I unfortunately bought a couple years ago purely bc I craved an Open World Survival, Post-Apocalyptic experience, but haven't exactly had the best experience with so far. Of course, I've not gotten further than maybe 30 or so minutes in, but I'm not sure if it was a waste of money or a quality experience worth checking out. The game is called Desolate, and while it's been too long since I've checked it's rating on Steam, I'm sure it must be decent since I probably wouldn't have bought it otherwise, I'm not sure what to think of it. It could either be a total disaster of an abandoned and derivative game, or it could be a true gem. Honestly, what little I remember of trailers, concept, and gameplay, it really didn't seem too much like a lazy production. From what I can remember, it's basically set on an island, but it's sort of just another version of The Zone, and crazy things have been going on due to experimentation, and I think that maybe I played as the CEO or boss in the prologue while being hunted. Anyway, looks to me like it'd be right up your alley, Charl, whether it's something that you can just dump on or you might enjoy in the long run

I think the next metro if it is even being worked on just needs to go all out and finally go fully open world with many different biomes, side quest, multiple main questlines and side questlines etc etc. like a mix between world building style, secrets, factions, gameplay, and story of fallout mixed with stalker. I think that would be amazing. Metro exodus seemed to be heading that direction in a sense but they didn’t go as far as they could have. Don’t get me wrong metro exodus is a really good game with amazing graphics (pc enhanced edition specifically) a great story, and fun gameplay but a fully big open world like a fallout mixed with somewhat more grounded world of stalker/metro would be a killer game. Not every game has to be massive open world RPG’s but I think that games with great lore, story, gameplay, and world building like fallout, stalker, and metro all only benefit from giving the player a bunch of stories and secrets that you can discover at your leisure. With massive open world RPG’s there is for one the replay ability of it so you can do things differently and make different decisions and possibilities time and time again. But I am also far more willing to spend days, months, years searching every nook and cranny for something that no player has ever discovered before.

honestly the librarians are one of the worst enemy designs ever, it works for the book since they are just a narrative device about them used to be human but in the game they respawn from the holes everywhere in the library too fast and too often and having to do a staring contest with them as your air filters run out and you just want to go back to exploring and looting is insufferable, they never worked properly for me, they always attacked me at some point because thy were too close or refused to run away, so the only option was to shoot them which is when you find out they are the most bulletspongy enemy ever.

Uh... the author the the Metro books was directly involved with the creation of some of the games, so it makes sense for them to be mentioned. Whereas the original film Stalker was more tenuously connected to Roadside Picnic in the first place, and the works of Tarkovsky are considered very artistically important in their own right, and the Stalker games were made a very long time after the film, and are based purely on the film, not on Roadside Picnic that I'm aware of. It just makes no sense at all for a film of Tarkovsky's, much less the novel that film was based on, itself written by another very historically important artist, to give the slightest crap about some videogames loosely based on it made many decades later. Those works are far above that. The author of the Metro books, on the other hand, is just some contemporary fiction writer, whose works are known in the West only by virtue of the game series based on them. Tons of film nerds in the West had watched Stalker and the rest of Tarkovsky's works long before the Stalker games were made (I know because I was one of them). They just aren't that important, relatively.

Love this game, love its atmosphere, love it's world. HATE the gunplay. Looks great with an expanded FOV and a shader mod though.
