I've been keeping a loose watch on the speed-running record for Dread since it released. Every day has seen the record go lower and lower. It's already down to an hour and a half. That's pretty insane. For my first run I did as many sequence breaks as I could and it was a lot of fun (early grapple, bomb, super missiles, and gravity suit). Early gravity suit kind of just breaks everything else. I definitely shouldn't have had the screw attack when I did. Had it before space jump.

I never got lost in this game, and that's not a brag. It's actually amazing how intuitive the "intended" path is in this game. Each upgrade usually leaves you pretty close to where you need to use it to progress, while oftentimes blocking unnecessary backtracking in subtle ways (such as dropping you off a small cliff you can't jump past upon entering a room in the early game, or utilizing water to hinder retracing, or the lava flows changing and closing doors you just passed through in order to open the way forward instead) and it's a marvel how well it all flowed- especially without the game holding your hand. Even more amazing is that none of this is infallible and it's entirely possible to get lost if you get distracted instead of constantly trying to connect the dots. From a game design standpoint, it's beautifully done. An open ended game with a followable thread of logic. I also like how this game is very "Show, don't tell" when it comes to bosses. The very first boss, its easy for new players to know to use missiles to deal damage because Samus uses one in the intro cutscene and it's the only way she was able to get a reaction, so logically that's what the player should do too. For Kraid, Samus shot him straight in the mouth in the cutscene and he recoils hard. Better follow suit! Everything has its logic without needing to hold your hand. (Except for sometimes with Adam. He's a little forward with the Emmi debriefs.)

I hope you enjoy going for 100% or speedrunning it, it really is such a satisfying way to play the game and is the reason the game encourages multiple runs through it. If you do plan on playing the older games, just know that the Missile doesn't uncover as many blocks as they do in this game, so you'll have to get used to using bombs to find stuff. This is kinda ironic but I see veterans struggle so much because they don't think to missile everything and instead wait until they finally get bombs to search around, which come much later than in prior games.

@@idate-ir8wm Dude said 8 hours without 100%, which is pretty on par with the Prime games length at 100% and FAR longer than any other 2D Metroid. So the length isn't a problem, there are a million other good games out there, if you are done with Dread and don't want to replay it, then find another game. The maze part of the game was toned down because this is likely a lot of people's first Metroid and that aspect of the series is one of the reasons it never sells. I'm sure the next game will be more willing to be maze-like. The combat is the same as previous games with some extras on top, it isn't lacking in any way, and its plenty hard but the series was never known for its difficulty anyways. Minor story correction from a lore nerd here: Samus doesn't lose her powers from physical amnesia, she loses her powers because Raven Beak takes them from her while she's unconscious. (I only found out you could spark into a ledge to run, and even that you could jump, slide, and run uphill without breaking boost when I collected the last couple of items and had to look it up) 3: There are a couple of very annoying one way doors in the game. Not just because they are blocked, but even afterwards when exploring you can walk in a normal door and then find out you have to take a huge detour to get back to the other side 😢 4: I would love to be able to rebind my controls, or more realistically to have a few control layouts. The Chozo created Mother Brain, so yes these are intended to be basically the same thing. Raven Beak used them to reprogram and modify the EMMI's to go after Samus. It's implied that he enhanced their abilities too.

Metroid Dread is my first Metroid game. And while yes, the challenge can be quite high (I'm dying a LOT on boss fights before I finally learn the attack patterns and how to counter them, sadly patience is not my strong suit), I'm liking it a lot. I like the fact that the game respects me enough to not hold my hand at every step, and I've never felt stumped enough that it got frustrating. I make a mental note (or sometimes even place a marker on the map) on areas I cannot reach yet, knowing I'll have to backtrack later. I do spend a lot of time on the map screen to trace a path to where I need to go next :) Plus, being able to finally beat a boss I've been struggling with or to find the solution on my own to the many puzzles to reach hidden items is quite satisfying (even though some of these might be trivial to the Metroid veterans). It's a satisfaction I haven't felt in quite some time. Again, I'm not at the same level as some veterans (it's not as fluid as the movement I've seen in this video, for instance), and I probably won't beat it in under 4 hours anytime soon, but I'll certainly finish it and dip my feet in the hard mode :D

You keep going on in this video about how lamentable the lack of accessibility is, but I feel the opposite -- in a modern gaming landscape filled to the absolute brim, ESPECIALLY from Nintendo, with hand-holding and "aw poor little billy can't beat it on his first try? let's just beat the stage for him then so he can see the whole game :)" mentality, Dread is an absolute breath of fresh air in being a rare mainline, forefront, major company major release that pulls absolutely no punches and challenges even longtime veterans of the series. It's such a rare, rare thing man, and is so fitting and perfect for Metroid. Let it be this way.

just a little note: you said its the end of samus's saga, nintendo said its was the end of samus's story with metroids, there is ideas for where she will go next otherwise, my biggest issue has just been wanting to re-map some buttons as for me i find jump, shoot and melee in the wrong order for me. otherwise been enjoying the game to the point this is the first metroid game i have actually kept going to try the sequence breaks.

Honestly, as a new Metroid fan that started with dread, I thought it was challenging, but great. Never found it way too hard, I knew what I was supposed to do (with the new mechanics) almost immediately. So I think it’s still a good one for beginners.

Dread was my second Metroid game ever, Super Metroid was my first experience with the franchise. I played Super Metroid using NSO during summer break, and lets just say that was a fast 2 days. I FELL IN LOVE with the series and went on to beat it 2 more times after that. Dread was announced and I new I had to have it, I beat the game and it was fantastic. I love Metroid but I am really struggling to find an affordable way to play older installments of the series. I am proud to be a member of the fandom.

part of missing emmi inputs isn't that people are inconsistant, the timing is too. They have 3 different animations for each direction and method of being caught, and each has a window the trigger can start, giving you about 5 frames after to hit the input

The weird thing about this game is that even though it is my first Metroid, I never got overwhelmed by the difficulty. Excellent video, i was hoping you'd do one for Dread! As a veteran Metroid fan myself I have only one real complaints with the game, and overall it's easily in my top 3 favorite Metroid games. It's one I haven't seen brought up so I'm curious what your thoughts are on it if you see this. This might be an unpopular opinion but I personally feel underwhelmed by the endings. Samus Returns had so many, the legacy images in Dread are cool but the traditional endings where Samus takes off her helmet or power suit as a reward for completion time are just...gone. I loved those endings because it felt like Samus was celebrating with the player so after a few runs of Dread I started feeling a little hollow. Seeing the close up on her helmet at the end only for it to be a fakeout left me rather disappointed. I read tgat the devs had some timing issues leading to things getting cut so im assuming that's what happened because Samus Returns was amazing regarding the endings. The legacy images are cool but few of them are for Dread itself and i sorely missed seeing Samus' human side in the endings because of it

Okay after playing Metroid Dread I’ve realized a few things. I loved the scene where Mercury Steam remembered that Samus was raised by the Chozo. And that she spoke in the Chozo language. Now they need to go back to “Other M” and change it to fit in the timeline. They need to remember that Adam was a Commander that Samus had so much respect for, that if he asked her not to use power up do to the safety of others, that she wouldn’t. And not that he’s “like her father”. No. She had a father in Old Bird. Other M has such great gameplay, and on Nintendo’s new consoles it would feel and play even more amazing, and they would be able to tweak out all the bugs. Movement would be so smooth with today’s controls, and you can have a 1st person view for looking/shooting if needed, but it doesn’t need to be required, it would just be a button press. Then they need to go and bring in their best sound designers and orchestra, they need to bring the music back to Metroid, just like they did with the prime series, and Samus Returns. But with all new themes. Music in Metroid let’s you know how Samus feels, it makes the mood. They need to bring back the “purple” Gravity Suit, and not just a feature. Missiles have to be useable in 3rd person, and not just first person view. The counter needs to be updated to the new counter strike that’s in Samus returns/Dread, it would make the gameplay so much smoother then trying to manually dodge, or trying to jump on the enemy’s head. Now let’s focus on the story. First off we need a title that makes sense, and not a code for Mother. This is a game where everyone aboard a space ship dies, and so we need a strong name. Also Samus never called the Metroid a baby in Samus Returns or Super Metroid, she called it “the Infant Metroid”, so let’s completely ditch her saying “the baby”. That got old pretty quick. Now… Let’s address the PTSD when she sees Ridley, up to that point Samus has faced Ridley 5 times, and not once did she go PTSD. She can have a panic attack because yes she completely destroyed him in Super, and she’s completely shocked that the creature that killed her whole family in front of her is alive, but give the lady some dignity, and not make her out to be crazy. And finally… Adam didn’t shoot Samus in the back to stop her, instead the cloned infant Metroid attacked Samus, as she thought it just hatched and that she might develop a bond like before, and he shot the Metroid killing it, and saving her. That’s why she was so exhausted, because it had drained her life energy to feed. Now the Voice acting/translation needs to be updated to our culture style, and not Japans culture style. People in other countries don’t always understand others cultures, and it makes things feel weird/awkward or dry. Instead let the actors and translation teams do what they do best. “Act”. I think people really feel that Other M is a bad game because of a few missteps along the way, and because they forgot some of her real past. But at its core it’s a good game, and it has so much potential. Let’s make it be the game it deserves.

I love the old ones I have them all, but I love dread it's a beautiful game. I'm having trouble with Raven Beak. I have only tried him 4-5 times. I'll beat him soon. I want to 100 hard mode them work on the time endings. Thanks for the information about getting the abilities to take to Kraid fight. Also about the gravity suit early I'm going to try that. I'm doing it today bc I started a new game on top of the other one at end to brush up on mechanics. I put it down a few days so I'm rusty. One thing I wished Dread had was health bars for the bosses, at least have them be togglable, this is because I like to see how much damage I'm doing to them and see how far away I was from beating them when I end up dead, it boosts my confidence knowing that I made further progress from my past death and lets me know what is more effective against the boss and what isn't so I can build upon the more effective method

Tip for countering the EMMIs: The screech line noise happens a few frames before the red flash. Time your counter with the screech. I’ve been able to counter the EMMIs with a very good chance of survival. The game has seemed to pick up on this though, and will sometimes randomize when the flash happens(or maybe it always randomized when that happened)

Man that Samus is a hodgepot of DNA now but what I found funniest after playing it is that years ago I tried my hands on a creepypasta involving Samus becoming the new Metroid Queen, which is kinda true now but also that she is the Queen of X-Parasites at the same time. Maybe for future someone takes Samus DNA and re-creates X and/or Metroids. Anyway, great job man, Dread can even be demanding for normal players (enemies cause too much damage and sometimes you can't even tell if you hurt them or not just on normal difficulty for example) but then also the Speedrun variations. Still, I never got to get all items because I have now idea or abilities to carry speed boost to the places demanding them.

Like the Guardians, the EMMIs are meant to be the “dreaded.” no pun intended. Another youtuber explained WHY we shouldn’t succeed at countering emmis (variable frame window), and honestly, it would’ve been cool if BotW had made the laser timings variable, too. EMMI and Guardians are meant to inspire true fear in us - not annoyance. (I imagine, though, from Samus’ pov she’s just tired of them after the fifth one)

Metroid Dread was a game I had great worries about. Carrying a plot on after what 18-20 years maybe longer? The new slide, little teleport dash, the E.M.M.I encounters. All of these had me excited but scared on how they’d be implemented man, this game blew it out of the water so perfectly. I have played Metroid for years, and I may get some slack but it really does feel like a modern day Super Metroid and is even just as impactful as Super Metroid.
