âProfessor SUMIOKA, what is METRON?â
METRON means âmeasureâ or âcriteriumâ in Ancient Greek. They found that PHYSIS or a thing of universal nature is absolute while NOMOS or an issue of human society can be decided by ourselves. So, they looked for METRON to evaluate policies.
âWhatâs it all about?â
In many countries, kings or emperors decided on nomos at their discretion. But there are also republics, where a council of wise men governs. Furthermore, a democracy was born that was determined by the votes of many ordinary people.
In a democracy, people are the METRON to decide everything, not only politics but also reputation, price, and significance. However, the judgments can be swung depending on the METRON that people further refer to. So, Sophists or wise advisors found, that if only emphasizing to people the METRON that evaluates their policies highly, they can derive their desirable judgment from people.
âIf you learn our technique, you can make even white black,â so saying, Sophists taught rhetoric or speech skills at extravagant prices and many youths wanting to become politicians coveted it. However, people rather despised Sophists and such youths as those who had no ethics nor beliefs.
âWhat do you think?â
The same is true today. By promoting their convenient values to people, many are trying to distort the world.
âProfessor SUMIOKA, I got it well, thanks!â
