Sema, which was performed with religious and mystical enthusiasm by Mevlana, one of the 13th century Sufis, developed gradually and became a ritual in itself, especially after Mevlana. Today, the Mevlevi ritual is simply called "sema".
The compositions that Mevlevis play and recite on their mukabele days are called Mevlevi rites. Rituals are the most perfect works that are within the understanding of melody and rhythm of our classical music, but as a means of expressing various excitements and excitements of Sufi joy in sound.

The history of music is as old as the history of humanity. Scientists say that people expressed their feelings and thoughts through music at a time when they did not know how to speak. The idea that music arises from religion is accepted by music historians, philosophers and sociologists today.
In primitive societies, music was considered a form of worship, a phenomenon that brought people to the Almighty Creator, and even a blessing from God to people.
Music had an important role in religions such as Totemism, Shamanism and Animism. In societies influenced by these religions, musicians were also clergy. In Shamanism, which was the religion of our ancestors before accepting Islam, religious men called "kam", "baksı" or "shaman" would convey their religious messages by playing and singing with the instruments in their hands.
Islam was not against this art either. However, like every phenomenon, music is on the right and good path; It is intended to be used in a way that will make you feel and reveal good and right emotions.
Prophet of Islam. Muhammad (pbuh) ordered that the Quran be read in a beautiful voice and in harmony according to a rule. Thus, tajwid and recitation were born, and these sciences have close relations with music.
After accepting Islam, music continued to take part in every phase of the lives of Muslim Turks, as before. Music took part in weddings, holidays, military farewell and welcome ceremonies, all kinds of religious ceremonies, and even in wars.
Religious Turkish Music can be divided into two under the headings of Mosque Music and Lodge Music, depending on the places where it is performed. These two types of Tekke Music, which are close to each other, include instruments as well as human voices. In Mosque Music, instruments are not used. With forms belonging to the mosque such as adhan, kaamet, salâ, salâtü's-selâm, mi'râciye, mavlîd, takbîr, temcîd, tesbîh, mahfel surah, munacaat; Forms belonging to the lodge, such as the Mevlevi rite, the breath, the stop, and forms such as hymn, tevşîh, shügl, na't, which are common in both places, constitute Religious Turkish Music.
The ascetic, solemn style seen in Mosque Music works is replaced by a mystical enthusiasm in Tekke Music works. It can be said that "dhikr", which is included in many sects and performed with musical accompaniment, played a role in this enthusiastic formation.
The most developed form of Tekke Music is Mevlevi Rituals. These works are also the largest, most artistic and most important works of all Turkish Music.
Mevlevi Rites; They are the products of the "Mevlevi order" sect founded by people who were in love with Mevlana and his thoughts after his passing to the eternal world.
There is no doubt that the subject of Mevlevi Rituals is so broad that it could be the subject of not one but hundreds of books and volumes of works could be written on it.
