4:11 Something to add to Arnold Rothstein's list of gambling-related crimes was that he was the man whom eight star members of the Major League Baseball team known as the Chicago White Sox went to to cut a deal. This deal would see the players, forevermore known to history as "The Black Sox", purposefully throw the 1919 World Series - which their team was heavily favoured to win over their opponent, the Cincinnati Reds - in exchange for money that the White Sox's tyrannical and miserly owner, Charles Comiskey, refused to give them as part of their contracts and that the players were, at the time, powerless to demand even though it was well-deserved. It's a small detail that doesn't negatively affect this excellent video by virtue of its exclusion, but I would argue that it's the action Rothstein is most famous for and so might've deserved a mention.

@@furioussherman7265 Yeah, I love that detail about him. It was in an earlier draft of the script but I wound up cutting it simply because there's debate around whether he really was behind the Black Sox scandal. Robert Lacey seemed adamant he was simply blamed for it by virtue of being one of the preeminent criminal masterminds of the day. I'm usually happy to wade a bit into historical debates, but felt I might sidetrack Lansky's story if I spent too much time on Rothstein. For another video!

Definitely an S tier episode here. Clear story that feels very accurate, even though I've barely heard about Meyer Lansky before this. I'm watching all History Dose eps, and I think this is by far the most people I've seen drawn in one episode. People are one of the hardest things to draw, even if small or far away. I'm not a big Mafia history guy, because I don't like the energy of people thinking Mafia are admirable or cool, even though they tended to be monsters who did despicable things and killed in the least fair ways ever. So i appreciate the different angle that focuses on a Mafia boss who was a financial prodigy, whose corruptness was mostly from looking the other way a lot. I've seen the very long Mafia movie called Once Upon a Time in America. I really appreciated what it taught me, but disliked the experience of watching it, due to the graphic RAP3 energy and having no likable characters. However, this video provided what is essentially the vibes i did like about that movie, plus your own unique superior storytelling and superb art. I even got a little Man in the High Castle vibes when Lansky's son got physically disabled, plus WW2 intertwining with the story (MIT High Castle was a very flawed show but had powerful immersive vibes in parts). Anyways phenomenal video!! Also, what the eff, Frank Sonatra was close to a Mafia?? That feels like how Tom Cruise is rumored to be with Scientology. Speaking of religion, throughout the video, I thought it was weird how mobsters ally largely based on religious and national identity, even though they are actively going super against their own religions' morals and their countries-of-origins' laws.

I grew up near Youngstown, Ohio. It used to be a major mob center. I took some diving classes in a reclaimed quarry not to far from the Pennsylvania Ohio border. There are bunch of old quarry lakes in that area. During my training I was cautioned by the instructor (only half joking) not to dive in "Bessemer Lake" as it was a fairly common body dumping ground for the Youngstown Mob back in the 70s. It was possible if I dove in that lake I would come upon an old car that had a skeleton in the trunk.

Financiava a obra. I'm astounded at the character of Meyer Lansky. A well mannered Jewish boy from Poland in America, was so intellectually gifted that they had to make him skip a grade him twice. That kind of thing doesn't really happen unless a student is without a doubt to advanced for a grade. I've been aquainted with very bright individuals who went on to become someone great or at the least achieved success, but didn't come close to be considered to skip a grade. Meyer passes the sixth grade with honours as well, after being skipped twice. He turns around, leaves school and becomes a gangster. My mind is blown.

You know who skipped 2 grade(and in high-school no less) Jeffery Epstien. The thing is Epstien was actually one of the brightest financial minds on the planet. The rich mainly went to him to launder there money 💰, everyone fixiates on the sex but never the money 💰.

Yes his tribe in Hollywood has made sure to make him a legend and give him credit for all kinds of things he never did. Hyman Roth was 100x the man Meyer was. That's why he was broke and living on a fixed income the last 30 years of his life. Couldn't he at least pull himself up to middle class? Couldn't he have tapped into his "connections" in New York for a juice loan that he could parlay into a fortune? lol

That's what his "community" wants you to think. The real truth is that he lived the last 30 years of his life broke and on a fixed income. If he was so respected, why couldn't he go to New York to get a juice loan from Sal or Vinny and parlay that into a fortune? He was very lucky to be friends with Charlie Luciano. He made some money in the beginning, crapped out, and lived as a bum the last 30 years of his life amongst "his people" in a Jewish ghetto in a 500 square foot tacky apartment.

@@Mcdamn1026 Sorry...............was it 28 years? Dude was living as a broke Jew, wearing 30 year old clothes living in a 450 square foot apartment. Back then Miami Beach was a real dump. This was before Miami Vice made it trendy in 1987 or whatever. It was a Jewish ghetto. Retirees with no money living on their Social Security in dumpy apartments. He fit right in. Went to the Jewish Deli every day walking his 6 pound dog wearing 30 year old clothing from when he was "somebody". That's the true story of Meyer. Hyman Roth was 100x the man he was.

I grew up hearing stories of these men. My dad was mayor and so was my pawpaw in Louisiana. Fact my dad nocked ed grady partson out cold in the middle of the court room at Jimmy hoffas case.i was born WAY late into my dad's life, I remember wanting to hang out with my dad and hear his and his friends talk business and tell old stories so he would pretend to bring me to school but we would go to the dinner instead and would tell me you will learn more here. They taught me how to shoot pool and place a bet on a cock fight 🤣. They would tell me crazy stories of Jerry Louis and tell me even crazier stories about his cousin that was a pastor boy did he live the ladies 😮

Hyman Roth in Godfather II is directly based off of Lansky! Lansky actually called the actor after seeing the movie, complimented him, but complained he should've been a more sympathetic character.

Lansky was one of the few dudes from the mob who wasn’t a punk. Wasn’t turning out women like a democrat. Wasn’t selling heroine. Wasn’t killing people because they looked at him wrong. Ran numbers and was honest about it. “Your probably not gonna win BUT if you do I will pay you.”

@@HistoryDose 1. I grew up in Duluth Mn. I have vivid memories of The German American Bund on the facade of a building in downtown Duluth. (if memory serves) by the early 60's it was a poolhall. 2. The thing people don't know today is there was a time (post WW1) when Fascism was a highly regarded political ideology. And not just on The Right, but across the board. HG Wells wanted a "Liberal Fascism". (See Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning.
