I've now seen three Georges who just absolutely blow me away... Mandy Patinkin (5 times on stage and multiple times on video), Jake Gyllenhaal (in the 2017 revival) and now Julian Ovenden. I'm so happy to find this video... it can stand proudly with the original!

Julian Ovenden is amazing. I loved him in the live BBC production of "The Sound Of Music". I wish there was a complete video of Jake Gyllenhaal in the 2017 Broadway revival.

People are so quick to compare this to the original version like yes, the original is sublime but this production is fantastic in its own right. All the characters, especially in the first act, seemed to have more depth and dimensions in them. Julian Ovenden’s Geoge has this unique sensitivity. Sophie’s Dot has this conviction. Rebecca’s Old Lady gave the character more substance by adding an almost psychological subtext (Alzheimer’s?). Jules seems to have more heart here. Idk. I think this was a great production with a modern take in it.

An interesting, almost childlike take on George There is the moment in “Finishing the Hat” where he says, “Look, I made a hat!” and looks around, but there is no one to see, to understand. That was beautiful and heartbreaking.

This sounds and looks like a production that can proudly stand next to the original one. Sondheim musicals can be done in perfectly different ways and if the quality is there AND they are true to the intent and content of the piece, every production will have it's singular value and be treasured forever. Forever - totally intended in this context.

I mean, the original cast - all of them, but in the main roles Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are really difficult to live up to, maybe impossible. They are both so incredibly vibrant and special in the way they deliver their lines and sing with a certain emotion. I've yet to see another cast that deliver the same magic, even if they are good in other ways.

Professionals on a level like this, it's unfair to make comparisons. Artists, directors make their own decisions and shouldn't try to copy what has been done before. If that's what you want go see Chicago or Lion King every 6 months and compile a list. This is totally worthwhile in it's own right and they score on every level, bringing out all intentions. Very happy there are several versions to enjoy now and doubtless many to come. Yeah pretty sure, this work of art will survive the ages.

That’s exactly what I was coming to the comments to say. Having both done and seen this show many times, it’s really something to note how much of an impact that larger orchestra makes. The emotions of the show literally FEEL grander and more epic. One can argue that the whole point of SUNDAY is about tiny details and intimacy - certainly true of many paintings - but Seurat did paint an *enormous* canvas after all, and this large visual production pays homage to that, quite literally. It could not have worked with the standard orchestra.

Acting/performing for a 2500 seat house vs acting/performing for a camera plot. Choices have to be made. Right/wrong? I always recall one of my professors telling me that “opinions and criticism come after the fact. Just do what you can do and move on to the next project.” I would love to see this orchestration performed by an opera company in the States with some phenomenal singing actors.

And Sondheim loved having actors playing instruments on stage. I saw a few seconds of Lupone playing tuba, can’t remember what show it was. I saw this in NY in the 80’s probably the original cast. Didn’t understand it at all. Now 40 years later I saw this and cried from the first Sunday to the end. Also now I understand what Lin-Manuel was quoting when he was introducing the “Sunday” in Times Square just after Steve died.
some parts were too... i don't know, fast? like there was no room for emotion at all; like they were just speaking their lines. other times they were acting too much, and it seemed very inauthentic. big props to the effects team though, the moving screens were a great addition.

I think it was meant to show that everything is happening in George’s mind, and he is not physically actually arranging the people. He is doing it in his mind as he finish painting. Also, before that, the people surrounded George as if to recognize that they are about to be immortalized. Sometimes, we have to go and think beyond. Anyways, that’s my interpretation.

I don't know how to feel about this production. Well, I do... but I don't want to seem harsh. Orchestra is good, but everything else is mediocre or downright poor execution. None of the characters seem to be cast correctly, and the posh British accent doesn't feel appropriate for Dot, an uneducated French woman. George is emotionless without any of the ticks and explosions of passion that show there is something hiding behind his cold exterior, and Ovenden's acting feels stiff (and his singing is like he is singing on a chamber BBC special rather than a true musical). He feels less like a stern voice set in his ways and more like a whining child. The soldiers worked in the original because they were a visual gag, but here it just feels incredibly awkward. In general my problems with the vocals come down to very little vocal acting and appropriate vocal decisions. Gyllenhaal and Patinkin had very different dynamics and tone of voice when singing Finishing the Hat vs. Beautiful, while Ovenden just powers his way through everything and adds these massive drawn out vowels to EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. There is no variation or emotional depth to any of the songs. Listen, I like new ideas on interpretation and direction. I am not some purist who thinks any deviation from the original is bad. But this staging is literally a worse version of the original. Static sets that feel to dark and with no interesting lighting (ironic given the subject of the musical) and bad framing making it difficult to know where to look (even with the camera following the action). I feel like this is a poor way to experience the musical period. The original is a philosophical allegory to present Sondheim's thoughts on art and it's creation. This is just noise. All the words, music, and movements are there, but the emotion is somehow lost.
