I bought a used one, wouldn't tune correctly. I also check the toroids and they were extremely loose. MFJ tech told me they all were that way but he wished they would make them tighter. (well why don't they then?) I shipped it back to them on Aug 2, got letter from them acknowledging receipt on Sep. 2, and they would start work on it in 3 more weeks! Well, Oct 22 and still no word from them. Sheesh..

it took 5 months to get my 998rt back from them. The poor tuner repair guy has MANY on his bench. Yes there is only ONE guy.....

I just got that new tuner also and it will tune as it should on antenna connector 2A but not on the primary 1A. SWR is 1.4 on that antenna on 1A. If I move it to 2A, it finds it in two or three clicks. I do see what looks like a poor solder job on the top of the board on the ground wire coming off that antenna connector. Time to look under the board I guess. No word from MFJ on what to do about it so far but I do have a ticket in.

That's really not very possible. There is just a relay switching between those two jacks. Keep in mind that 1A also goes to the ceramic insulator wire antenna output. If you have something touching it then there would be a difference.

I took it apart as you describe and found nothing wrong or lose. It has done that from day one.

@@baronlund9725 Then you need to trick it. Reverse the leads to to antenna jacks and see if the trouble follows you. Looking at the schematic there is absolutely nothing different between the jacks and the spdt relay except ant 1 has the extra post for random wire antennas. It could be some weird logic problem that changes loading algorithms between ant 1 and 2 or knowing MFJ it could be a wiring or circuit trace error under that relay... Pop out the board and look for a stray circuit trace around there.

@@n4lq I had reversed the antenna's already to verify if it was linked to a certain antenna and it was not. Just as a test, I have an old dummy load I will connect to it and try that. I did look the board over pretty good but not with a glass to check up close.
