You are absolutely right, R1+R2 is a dead test, performed on a non-energised circuit using the continuity range at 200mA test current. The MFT1700s offer the opportunity to check R1+R2 measurement on a live circuit by measuring Ze, storing it as Zref, a reference, and subtracting that from Zs automatically on R1+R2 loop range. This is not meant to replace the dead test method but to enhance the monitoring of circuits which can not readily be de-energised.

TRMS is an advantage for volt, current and frequency measurements on distorted waveforms such as on circuits with motor drives downstream or generated supplies. This transfers through to loop testing resistance as it is a function of measured voltage and current. The new MFT1730 not only incorporates TRMS but a number of other features that make it particularly useful for testing industrial installations like phase rotation and 3-phase RCD testing.

Thanks for your comments. All the feedback to us from customers says they like the new leads. The increased silicon content has reduced the tangling and makes them easier to control as well as improving the insulation properties. The standard probes are less bulky in the tip area yet conform to GS38. Customers tell use that the croc clips are much “grippier” and are easier to get in to tight spaces because of their new shape. And the long probe, we’ve been asked why we haven’t done it before.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you found the video useful and thanks in advance for your purchase. It is always good to hear from end users, whether it be positive comments or suggestions for improvement. We do not sell direct but instead have a network of re-sellers and wholesalers who stock our products. Obviously it pays to shop around so check out your local wholesalers, or one of the specialist test equipment resllers, or even the internet, depending on your preference.

Hi, I just bought a 1730 three days ago. So what do i think.... Well, you soon realise that is built to a very high standard indeed!! It works beautifully too! All the switches have a very nice "feel" to them and well, it just oozes quality. It is very simple to operate with no "hidden" functions and you get the hang of it very quickly. Why did i choose Megger?? Straight forward "intuitive" controls, well thought out, useful features, and any problems, just send it back to Dover. Just delighted!

For later MFT1720s where there is NO RCD present set the large dial to L-PE and the small dial to Z. The Display should show 2Hi Connect the L1 lead to the phase conductor and L2 to main earth. FOR RCD protected circuits set the large dial to L-PE and the small dial to Z. The Display should show 3Lo Connect the L1 lead to the phase conductor,L2 to the CPC, and L3 to Neutral. To toggle between 2Hi, 3Lo and 2Lo press the arrow button on the left hand side above the backlight button.

at Allenvik, it is most probably the parallel paths that are introduced with the energised system. The dead R1&R2 test requires the disconnection of the circuits conductors, removing all parallel paths. whilst the live test does not do this.

Hi. Thanks for your comments. Not sure why you have no sound. I can hear it OK. Regarding Zs and PFC there are two different methods depending if you have an early or later MFT1720. For earlier models where there is NO RCD present set the large dial to L-N and the small dial to Z. Connect the L1 lead to the phase conductor and L3 to main earth. FOR RCD protected circuits set the large dial to L-PE and the small dial to Z. Connect the L1 lead to the phase conductor and L2 to the CPC.

Hi maxree10 and caerleon87. Thank you both for choosing Megger and for taking the time to tell us what you think about your new MFT1700 series products. We really value and appreciate the feedback and your comments will be passed to our development team and manufacturing staff in Dover where these products were designed and built.

Firstly I'd like to say sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your message. We will have to answer your question in sections due to the 500 character limit. 2xI RCD testing: Yes it was mentioned in the original 17th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations however it was removed at 1st amendment stage. I can only assume it was because there was a concern that all the test instruments in the UK market would at the stroke of a pen become obsolete, and that would have been a mistake.

Ive got 2 pat4 dv3's and 2 1552's but would like to purchase the 1730 im just hoping to get a decent deal for one when the rep is over soon. I have also heard the leads arent as good as previous and would have thought lithium cells would be a better solution for power but i could live with it.

Yes it does have sound. I assume you are having trouble hearing it?

would endorse that megger testers are the best i have used in more than 10 years of testing. A couple of questions i have are; is there now a requirement in the regs to carry out a 2X rcd test? what is the advantage of changing to true RMS values for loop testing? surely R1 + R2 is a dead test to be carried out before energising a circuit? coments please !

I would strongly suggest megger gets rid of the Zref/R1 & R2 rubbish at the earliest opportunity. Electricians need to monitor the Zs measurements for verification of ADS. Any person competent to test and inspect effectively should be able to deduct one number from another on their own - the presence of an R1 & R2 setting on the loop dial is also confusing to learners. This encourages bad practice - nothing else.
