Lifepo 4 battery in the standard range. Non of this 20% to 80% charge crap to look after your battery. Can be fully charged and left no bother can be fully discharged no bother. LFP is rapidly becoming the ‘go to’ chemistry for EV batteries, cheaper, safer and will outlive the car they are in...but to all intents and purposes it doesn’t matter that much. Our early 2019 Kia e-Niro is NMC and yes, we do use an 80% charging regime, not so much to protect the battery but because that’s all we need. We live in rural France, so everything is a drive, the nearest town, Niort is 55 km, Poitiers and Angouleme 60..but even so a typical week of driving is only 200-250 km, well within the 80% charge on the car, even in winter. We do charge to 100% about once a month but at home, only use rapids on long trips...no detectable range loss after 70,000 km and we’ve done 2 trips back to the UK, 1 to Germany, 1 to Switzerland...and France is a big place. LFP is the way to go but I expect this now ‘old’ Kia’s battery to last a lot longer than any ICE unit.
@gregorygreg4263

@@kiae-nirodiariesencore4270 you've got to understand one thing I have a leaf 30killowat and this car has short range which forces me to charge it to 100% everyday for my job in 6years and 70000 miles I have lost 20% of my battery so that is why I am going with Lifepo4 battery. I will keep it at a 100% all the time and won't hopefully get the degradation I have had on the leaf. Plus the range is about right and I save money. A Kia e Nero would be out of my price bracket. I also need a car that can tow which the MG can. Lastly I tend to keep my cars longer than others the only reason I am getting rid of the leaf is the range issue or I would keep it for another 6 years.

Idem for cars such as the Polestar/Volvo. SAIC have been building cars for VW for well over a decade... In fact, across the MG models you find some shared components with VW. The MG4 was designed in the UK, with a French lead designer. The chassis was tuned by the Germans. Frankly, overall, in particular in the top-end version it's a really well put together package (faux-leather seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, blind-spot detection, electric drivers seat, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, 360 camera views, nav, wireless charging pad, privacy glass rear passenger and rear window etc.). Here in France we even get the luxury version with a heat pump as standard, giving an additional 10% saving on range in winter conditions, plus pre-heating of the battery. For the price it is unbeatable...

Thanks for mentioning the charging speed which they didn’t talk about in the video. This is the only down-side of our Kia e-Niro which we’ve had since March 2019, it was one of the first to come into the country (we live in France) and even form low SOC the best we’ve seen is 75Kw...which it doesn’t maintain for very long. Your efficiency though does seem disappointing given that the car sits lower and looks a lot more ‘slippery’ than the e-Niro. Our winter/summer average over 70,000 km is 14.5 kWh/100 km (4.27 miles/kWh)...yesterday I did 100 km of local driving around the Poitou-Charente...nice empty roads, gently rolling terrain..and got 11.8 kWh/100 km (5.25 m/kWh). A friend of mine here has a 2017 Ioniq regularly get between 8 and 9 /100 km (7 to 8 miles/kWh) and he doesn’t drive like a vicar’’s wife either. It seems that Hyundai/Kia and Tesla are still ahead on efficiency....but I would have loved the charging speed of the MG4 last winter when we did a 2,200 km round trip to Frankfurt...not something we would normally do but grandkids get born at odd times and you have no control of where your kids end up living and working..😊

There are even more differences in the spec, but those are the ones that were important for me. The headrest juts forward so I can't sit comfortably. Compared to my 2019 version it isn't comfortable. I could cry with disappointment. Good technology though, however, it is really glitchy. Radio just turns itself off. It keeps welcoming me to 1st Jan 2019. I have a squeal on my wheel when reversing hard right. I have a service required every 500 miles, and the service department just reset it, putting my service further and further back. Seat belt isn't adjustable, cuts into my neck and rubs my nipple. For a lot people range is top thing , less likely to have to have to top up outside your home ( if available) , this may save your a few hundred pounds at least every year and will hold its charge better and price when trading in in say 5 years

Good look and drive - thanks. Also note rear wheel drive, most EVs this size are front wheel drive. Bonnet seems short but this is proof of a ground up EV design. Good safety ratings. Battery cooling is by variable air intake from sharp-look front vents. Juries out on how effective this system is. Entry and start very slick - its on when you get in - no start button. All this shows an advance on previous MG models and their intention of growing EV market share. Now all we need is a national grid which doesn't go dark for 3 hours a day ...

I've seen a couple at the local MG dealers . It does look nice. The issue with all the MG EVs is supply. There are currently no MG EVs on the Motability scheme.
@thelaserhive3368

I must admit, the choice and the supply situation with Motability is making me consider leaving the scheme at next renewal. Also upfront payments for cars I would actually want within the scheme are definitely on the rise. I will want an EV with a decent long range and if things don't improve by mid 2023 then I'll be ordering a car outside the scheme for when my contract ends in Jan 24. I'll then keep that car for probably 6 years before changing. I realise that financially I'll be worse off, but for me the compromises on Motability right now ( if they persist) will cause me to leave.

@@thelaserhive3368 The best EV left seems to be the Mokka E, purely by virtue of being just about the last man standing. range is so so but it is what it is. The MG4 would in time be a superb Motability car at a good price. i am however, quite likely to go carless at the end of the year.

@@PassportToPimlico Yes, I think you’re right. I won’t really be thinking hard about it until August next year, but if things have not improved then I will seriously consider leaving the scheme. Considered an MG4 but my wife couldn't see the front or rear of the car from the drivers seat. Which would mean 360 camera in the Trophy model, and that's just to much money. For me I took fright at the piano glossy bits inside and more so with the fact that what looks like a window just before the c pillar is actually a shiny piano plastic panel which had scratches on when we test drove it. Saying all that it drove nicely and is a bit of a bargain.

I guess british people got lower standards when it comes to interior quality. The "leather" in the MG4 basically comes from a cheap gamerchair. Same with the seats. The car is decent for people who gives 0 efs what they are driving, its got good range and economy, but the car really cant compare to EV´s like Renault Megane, Kia Niro EV etc.
@ElectricVehicleMan
Жыл бұрын
Doesn’t have to compare when it’s significantly cheaper. About £10k compared to the Niro. It’s like comparing the Niro to an iPace and saying the interior is crap on the Niro. Not lower standards, just realistic ones.

Why are we going backwards in EV spec? Our 64 Leaf has heated seats and steering wheel. Having a Tesla and a Leaf in the household I would say heated seats are a must in an EV as the heaters are not so good as a ICE vehicle.

Currently have a Tesla model 3 on lease. Test drove the long range MG4 and was very impressed. I think it’s a bit nit-picky going on about the cheaper plastics. Can’t justify the extra expense of the Tesla. I’ll miss the insane acceleration but this is no slouch. Ordered the Trophy as buying through the company makes it such a tax efficient deal anyway, and the differences between this and the Tesla for the price are minimal if not superior in favour of the MG IMO. Take one for a spin before considering spending the extra money on something else.

No one seems to be talking about this car in comparison with ICE cars price wise. This seems to be comparible with the Ford Focus which according to Ford has an entry level price of £27,600 vs MG4 £26,995. Is this first of the EV's that can now compete with ICE cars on purchase price? This was originally predicted for the late 2020's.

Looks good - but the fly in ointment (and it's a BIG ONE) is this:- If our lives and critical infrastructure in the west increasingly come to rely on and be dependent on Chinese technological wonders such as this then we will possibly (no, likely!) to be in the same beholden position that Germany and other countries found to their cost re with Russia and energy st some point in near future. China is playing the long game with it's ambition for world hegemony ---and it's winning. Low priced temptations such as this help it achieve it's ultimate goal - even in a small and seemingly innocuous way. I don't blame anyone who choses it - the pricepoint is remarkable, but we need protective response from our governments on such goods. Massive tariifs and robust assurances are required on such imports.
